Shahbaz Gill sent on two-day physical remand

A court in Islamabad on Wednesday approved a two-day physical remand of PTI leader Shahbaz Gill in a sedition case.

The case hearing took place amid strict security arrangements, with duty magistrate Umar Shabbir ordering police to present the PTI leader in court on Friday.

During the brief proceedings, police requested a remand of the PTI leader. The court then briefly reserved its verdict before eventually granting a two-day physical remand.

The Islamabad police took Shahbaz Gill, who is PTI Chairman Imran Khan's chief of staff, into custody Monday afternoon from Bani Gala Chowk for inciting the public against state institutions.

Providing reasons for the remand, the police told the court they still need to recover Gill's mobile phone and the device he used to make the statements he was arrested for.

"We also need to investigate at whose behest the programme was aired," the police told the judge.

Faisal Chauhdry, Gill's counsel, told the judge that the programme was not aired on anyone's directives.

The case against Gill has been registered at the Kohsar police station. The first information report (FIR) contains violations of various sections of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).

Ashura processions conclude peacefully across the country

Mourners across the country took out processions on Tuesday to observe Yaum-i-Ashura amid tight security arrangements and with cellular services suspended in several areas.

Yaum-i-Ashura is observed every year on Muharram 10 with solemnity to pay homage to Imam Hussain and other martyrs of Karbala.

Strict security measures were taken to ensure the safe passage of processions in the major cities. Mobile phone services had remained suspended for the third consecutive day as part of the security measures, however, they started reopening after 6pm.

Later in the evening, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, in a press conference, said that not a single untoward incident had occurred during the first 10 days of Muharram.

He lauded the security institutions for playing a "seminal role for ensuring peace during the mourning processions and majalis".

Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also congratulated Sanaullah and all the security forces for protecting the lives and property of the people during the last three days.

"This day has been completed peacefully due to your team work," he said in a statement issued by the PM

The main procession in Karachi, which was taken out from Nishtar Park at 9:00am, culminated at Hussainian Iranian Imambargah after passing along MA Jinnah Road, according to a press release issued by traffic police.

During the course of this journey, mourners covered Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto Road, Mehfil-i-Shah-i-Khorasan, MA Jinnah Road, Mansfield street, Preedy street and Bolton Market.

In Karachi and other major cities of Sindh, more than 55,000 police and Rangers personnel have been deployed for the security of mourning processions and mobile phone and internet services are to remain suspended under a comprehensive security plan for Ashura.

After the processions culminated, Chief Minister Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah, in a statement available with Dawn.com, lauded the police, Rangers and other law enforcement agencies for successfully fulfilling their responsibilities.

He also thanked the doctors and paramedic staff for providing their services to the participants of the processions.

Punjab police on the way to take over Banigala security: PTI leaders

Fearing the arrest of its party chairman Imran Khan by Islamabad police, the PTI and its allies on Tuesday said that Punjab police officers were being sent to take over security of Banigala — Imran’s residence in the capital.

PML-Q leader Moonis Elahi, son of PTI-backed Punjab Chief Minister Parvez Elahi, claimed that there was “some movement” towards Banigala. “We are sending Punjab police for protection,” he said soon after another PTI leader Shahbaz Gill was “abducted” from Banigala Chowk.

Soon after, Punjab Minister for Cooperative and Public Prosecutions Mohammad Basharat Raja also said the Punjab police’s elite force was on the way to Banigala for security.

 “I’ve reached Banigala. We know how to protect our leaders. Don’t test our patience!” he tweeted.

However, PTI Vice President Fawad Chaudhry said the party chairman was in no need of police protection since his followers would protect him.

Chaudhry warned that in case Imran was arrested, “There will be a movement in Pakistan that will sweep away the imported government like straws.”

“Hopefully no one will make such a mistake but the workers are ready,” he tweeted.

On the other hand, at a press conference later in the day, Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah claimed that the news of Punjab police being dispatched to Bani Gala was “unverified and not proven”.

“No province can send the police or force here without the permission of the federal government,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) Police clarified that no operation was being conducted near PTI Chairman Imran Khan’s Bani Gala residence “as of yet”.

“People are advised not to pay attention to false information and propaganda,” the ICT police’s Twitter account said.

The police statement further said that more than 70 policemen had been deployed for Imran’s security, adding that a police superintendent was serving as the PTI chairman’s chief security officer.

The account said that the police would only take steps that were permitted by the law. “A formal request will be made for an additional contingent of police if it is required from any other province,” the account stated.

Sacrifices of Imam Hussain (AS) kept Islam alive: PM

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has said that Islam is alive because of the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his companions and these sacrifices give courage and hope to the faithful in the face of difficulties and challenges.

In a message on the occasion of Youm-e-Ashur, the Premier said this day reminded of the unparalleled struggle between good and evil, when a group led by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) refused to show allegiance to evil and stood before a seemingly powerful faction.

Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) became a symbol of courage, determination and bravery, he remarked.

The PM said on the 9th and 10th of Muharram, the family of Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his loyal companions despite lack of resources challenged the forces of oppression and tyranny and made Islam alive with the sacrifice of their lives.

He said the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (AS) was an important lesson for the Muslim Ummah.

“We should all make the philosophy of sacrifice the beacon of light for us and face all kind of challenges with bravery and steadfastness for the success of truth and virtue.”

Shehbaz Sharif said the country was going through a critical time which made it all the more important to act with courage and righteousness. “We have to display patience, courage and solidarity to take the country out of the present difficulties.”

He prayed to Allah Almighty to give everybody courage to follow the life and teachings of Imam Hussain (AS) and make Pakistani nation prosperous and developed.

Ashura being observed with due solemnity

Youm-e-Ashur is being observed today across the country with due solemnity to pay homage to the supreme sacrifice rendered by Hazrat Imam Hussain (AS) and his devoted companions in Karbala.

The mourning processions are being taken out in all the cities and towns of the country as Muslims are performing mourning rituals to mark the Ashura.

Strict security measures have been ensured by the local management of different cities and some road closures were also in place to avoid any untoward incident.

In Lahore, the main mourning procession took out from Nisar Haveli of the Walled City to the Karbala Gamay Shah.
