FIA arrests suspect who shared Maryam Nawaz's fake pictures on social media

FIA arrests the person who shared Maryam's fake pictures
Federal Investigation Agency's (FIA) cybercrime wing has arrested an alleged worker of PTI for uploading fake images of PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on social media.

According to the FIR, the suspect, Fayyaz ud Din, son of Ishraq ud Din, who is a resident of Sabz Ali Town Warsak Road, Peshawar, has been booked under Section 21, 24 of Pakistan Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) 2016 and 509 of Pakistan Penal Code.

The FIA presented the suspect in a relevant court, which remanded him for seven days in prison.

Media reports suggest that Fayyaz launched a social media campaign to malign PML-N by uploading Maryam's fake videos and pictures.

Sri Lankan PM quits after violent clashes

Sri Lanka Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa
Sri Lanka Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa resigned on Monday, his spokesman said, shortly after violent clashes between his supporters and anti-government protesters left 78 people wounded.

The 76-year-old sent his letter of resignation to his younger brother, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa, clearing the way for a “new unity government”, spokesman Rohan Weliwita said.

Earlier in the day, the Sri Lankan authorities imposed a nationwide curfew and deployed the army after dozens of people were hospitalised when government supporters armed with sticks and clubs attacked protestors, AFP reporters said.

The US ambassador to Sri Lanka condemned “the violence against peaceful protestors today, and call on the government to conduct a full investigation, including the arrest & prosecution of anyone who incited violence”.

Sri Lankans have suffered months of blackouts and dire shortages of food, fuel and medicines in the island's worst economic crisis since independence, sparking weeks of overwhelmingly peaceful anti-government demonstrations.

But on Monday, the biggest clashes since the start of the crisis erupted in Colombo when supporters of the family of the president and the prime minister, went on the rampage, AFP reporters at the scene said.

Police fired tear gas and water cannon and declared an immediate curfew in Colombo which was later widened to include the entire South Asian island nation of 22 million people.

At least 78 injured people were hospitalised, Colombo National Hospital spokesman Pushpa Soysa told AFP. Officials said that the army riot squad was called in to reinforce police.

Soldiers have been deployed throughout the crisis to protect deliveries of fuel and other essentials but until now, not to prevent clashes.

Scores of Rajapaksa loyalists attacked unarmed protesters camping outside the president's office at the seafront Galle Face promenade in downtown Colombo since April 9, AFP reporters said.

The violence began after several thousand supporters of the prime minister, brought in buses from rural areas, poured out of his nearby official residence.

Rajapaksa had addressed some 3,000 supporters at his house and pledged he would “protect the interests of the nation.”

The supporters then initially pulled down tents of protesters in front of the prime minister's Temple Trees residence and torched anti-government banners and placards.

They then marched to the nearby Galle Face seafront promenade and began destroying other tents set up by the “Gota go home” campaign that demands the president step down.

Bitcoin falls to 10-month low as stock markets tumble

Bitcoin
Bitcoin fell to its lowest level since July 2021 on Monday as slumping equity markets continued to hurt cryptocurrencies, which are currently trading in line with so-called riskier assets like tech stocks.

Bitcoin dropped to as low as $32,763.16 shortly before 1100 GMT, in its fifth consecutive session of falling.

The cryptocurrency has dropped 13 per cent so far in May and has lost more than half its value since it hit an all-time high of $69,000 in November last year.

"I think everything within crypto is still classed as a risk asset, and similar to what we've seen with the Nasdaq, most cryptocurrencies are getting pummelled," said Matt Dibb, COO of Singapore-based crypto platform Stack Funds.

The tech-heavy Nasdaq fell 1.5pc last week and has lost 22pc year to date, hurt by the prospect of persistent inflation forcing the US Federal Reserve to hike rates despite slowing growth. Nasdaq futures were down a further 2.3pc on Monday.

Dibb said other factors in the decline over the weekend — Bitcoin closed on Friday around $36,000 — were the cryptomarket's notoriously low liquidity over the weekends, and also short-lived fears that the algorithmic stablecoin called Terra USD (UST) could lose its peg to the dollar.

Stablecoins are digital tokens pegged to other traditional assets, often the US dollar.

UST is closely watched by the crypto community both because of the novel way in which it maintains its 1:1 dollar peg, and because its founders have set out plans to build a reserve of $10 billion worth of bitcoin to back the stablecoin, meaning volatility in UST could potentially spill over into bitcoin markets.

Ether, the world's second-largest cryptocurrency, which underpins the Ethereum network, fell as low as $2,360 on Monday, its lowest since late February.

Murad Ali Shah directs irrigation dept to release drinkable water in relevant systems

Chief Minister Sindh Murad Saeed
Taking notice of the water shortage in some districts of Sindh, Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has directed the irrigation department to “immediately release water in relevant systems so that people and their cattle could drink water”.

“Due to the acute shortage of water in the Indus River, its main canals and distributaries have dried up, therefore, people — particularly living on the tail end of the right bank of the river — were running from pillar to post to fetch water,” the CM was quoted as saying in a press release issued by his office.

The statement said that CM Shah had directed Irrigation Minister Jam Khan Shoro to make necessary arrangements to release water in the distributaries of tail-end districts of Thatta, Sujawal, Badin and others so that people and their cattle could drink water.

The CM office said after receiving the directives from the CM, the Minister had released water in the areas of Thatta and Sujawal. It added that the water situation would “further improve by Monday evening”.

Jam Khan told the CM that Sakro Division, District Thatta’s channels that were tailed for supplying drinking water were as follows:

  • Kotri Minor (Ghorabari ponds)
  • Kotri Minor (Sanwalpur ponds)
  • Garho Minor (Ponds Garho)
  • Juho Minor (Ponds Keti Bunder)
  • Nagwah Minor (Sakro City ponds)
  • Sakro Branch (Ghulamullah city Ponds)
  • Nari Chach Lower (Thatta city)
  • Nari Chach Lower (Makli city ponds)
  • Jam Branch (Gujjo city)

The CM office said that apart from this potable water was made available in all channels of the Sakro division during the rotation programme from April 25 to May 7.

Putin to send 'doomsday' warning to West at Russia's WW2 victory parade

Putin to send 'doomsday' warning to West at Russia's WW2 victory parade
Putin to send 'doomsday' warning to West at Russia's WW2 victory paradePresident Vladimir Putin will send a "doomsday" warning to the West when he leads celebrations on Monday marking the 77th anniversary of the Soviet Union's victory over Nazi Germany, brandishing Russia's vast firepower while its forces fight on in Ukraine.

Defiant in the face of deep Western isolation since he ordered the invasion of Russia's neighbour, Putin will speak on Red Square before a parade of troops, tanks, rockets and intercontinental ballistic missiles.

A fly-past over St Basil's Cathedral will include supersonic fighters, Tu-160 strategic bombers and, for the first time since 2010, the Il-80 "doomsday" command plane, which would carry Russia's top brass in the event of a nuclear war, the Defence Ministry said.

In that scenario, the Il-80 is designed to become the roaming command centre for the Russian president. It is packed with technology but specific details are Russian state secrets.

The 69-year-old Kremlin leader has repeatedly likened the war in Ukraine to the challenge the Soviet Union faced when Adolf Hitler's Nazis invaded in 1941.

"The attempt to appease the aggressor on the eve of the Great Patriotic War turned out to be a mistake that cost our people dearly," Putin said on Feb. 24 when he announced what he called a special military operation in Ukraine.

"We will not make such a mistake a second time, we have no right."

Putin casts the war in Ukraine as a battle to protect Russian speakers there from persecution by Nazis and to guard against what he terms the US threat to Russia posed by NATO enlargement. Ukraine and the West dismiss the fascism claim as nonsense and say Putin is waging an unprovoked war of aggression.

The Soviet Union lost 27 million people in World War Two, more than any other country, and Putin has railed in recent years at what Moscow sees as attempts in the West to revise the history of the war to belittle the Soviet victory.

Beside the 1812 defeat of French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, the defeat of Nazi Germany is the Russians' most revered military triumph, though both catastrophic invasions from the west left Russia deeply sensitive about its borders.

The war in Ukraine will cast a long shadow over this Victory Day.

Russia's invasion has killed thousands of people and displaced nearly 10 million. It has also left Russia in the grip of tough Western sanctions, and has raised fears of a wider confrontation between Russia and the United States - by far the world's biggest nuclear powers.

Although 11,000 troops marching across Red Square along with what the Defence Ministry has said will be 131 pieces of military hardware will present a grand spectacle, the Ukraine conflict has exposed weaknesses in Russia's armed forces despite Putin's attempt in his two decades in power to halt the post-Soviet decline.

The Kremlin has been denied a quick victory and the Russian economy - squeezed hard by sanctions - is facing the worst contraction since the years following the fall of the Soviet Union.

Less than two decades ago, US President George W. Bush joined Putin for the May 9 celebrations in Moscow. This year no Western leader was invited, the Kremlin said.

The United States and its allies have ramped up supplies of weapons to Ukraine and Putin has faced calls from some in the Russian military to unleash greater firepower on Ukraine, two sources close to the armed forces told Reuters. Moscow has told the West that its arms supplies are legitimate targets.

Ahead of May 9, speculation swirled across Moscow and Western capitals that Putin was preparing some sort of special announcement on Ukraine, perhaps an outright declaration of war or even a national mobilisation.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov dismissed those suggestions on Wednesday, describing them as "nonsense".

The Kremlin did not respond to requests for comment on what Putin might say in his speech, to be delivered from the Red Square tribune in front of Vladimir Lenin's Mausoleum.

Last year, Putin jabbed at Western exceptionalism and what he said was the rise of neo-Nazism and Russophobia - trends he has returned to again and again when addressing the issue of Ukraine.

Thousands of Sikhs attend parade in Italy ahead of Khalistan referendum

Thousands of Sikhs attend parade in Italy ahead of Khalistan referendum
Thousands of Sikhs from across the European Union (EU) gathered in Italian city of Brescia to take part in the EU phase in global Khalistan referendum for secession of Punjab from India.

International Sikh advocacy group Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) has been organising Khalistan Referendum movement and has brought out thousands of Sikhs in the UK, Geneva and now in Italy.

The Khalistan referendum voting will take place on Sunday at Brixia Forum, Via Caprera, 5 25125 Brescia (BS) but Sikhs took part in the historic Nagarkirtan Parade to celebrate the Vaisakhi festival and to demand an independent state of Khalistan for millions of Sikhs.

Sikhs For Justice said that Italy is home to more than 200,000 Sikhs who are a vibrant part of the Italian community and that’s the reason this city was chosen for the parade and the referendum.

Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, Attorney at Law (NY) General Counsel to SFJ, said the enthusiastic participation of Sikhs in the Nagarkirtan Parade showed the desire and demand of Sikhs for separation from Indian occupation in order to live in the free land of Khalistan where Sikhs will live under the teachings of their gurus.

Dr Bakhshish Singh Sandhu, President Council of Khalistan, Washington DC said that “under international law and UN Charter, Sikhs have a clear case for the right to self-determination on the grounds that they have a distinct and separate religious identity and language and have been subjected to genocide by India since 1984."

Under Prime Minister Modi, persecution of Sikhs for supporting the Khalistan referendum campaign has increased as hundreds have been charged, detained and tortured under colonial-era sedition laws.

Dupinderjit Singh, Sikhs For Justice UK’s Coordinator stated: “Khalistan referendum is a lawful and democratic campaign as a use of ballot is the most legitimate and peaceful method to ascertain the will of the people on a political question”. Under UN Charter and Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Sikh people have a right to express their will through a referendum on the question of the continued and future association of Punjab with India.”

Peoples Party settles for seats in Punjab cabinet

Opposition Leader in the Senate Yousuf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Adviser to the PM Qamar Zaman Kaira and Punjab Assembly parliamentary leader Hasan Murtaza of the PPP called on Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz
The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) seems content with three ministries in Punjab and does not appear to be pushing the PML-N leadership for the governor’s and speaker’s slots, which the latter is keen on keeping for itself.

PPP’s Makhdoom Ahmad Mahmood, who was earlier nominated for the governor’s post by his party, is reportedly upset with the decision.

In the first summary Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif sent to the president on April 17, he had recommended the name of Mr Mahmood as the Punjab governor. However, when President Dr Arif Alvi returned that summary after holding it for 15 days without a decision, the premier re-endorsed the advice on Saturday asking for the removal of incumbent governor of the PTI, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, and appointment of a PML-N loyalist from Bahawalpur, Balighur Rehman.

Citing the Constitution, the PML-N says if President Alvi does not act on the premier’s recommendation within 10 days, Mr Rehman will automatically become the governor. “The prime minister has sent a summary to the president recommending my name for the Punjab governor. And hopefully the president will accept the summary,” Mr Rehman, who remained a minister in the Shahid Khaqan Abbasi cabinet.

“Before the allied parties took over the government, the PML-N had agreed to give the slot of the governor to the PPP, but after coming to power it backtracked. The PML-N is known for this kind of politics,” a source in the PPP said.

On Saturday, Opposition Leader in the Senate Yousuf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Adviser to the PM Qamar Zaman Kaira and Punjab Assembly parliamentary leader Hasan Murtaza of the PPP called on Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz here and discussed the power-sharing formula in the province.

“The meeting discussed the PML-N and PPP top leadership’s arrangements with regards to power sharing in Punjab. PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari had withdrawn his party’s earlier claim on the Punjab governorship on the wish of PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif.

As per the latest understanding between the two parties, the PPP delegation forwarded the names of its three MPAs to CM Hamza for their induction into his cabinet, which is yet to be constituted. The formation of a new provincial cabinet has been delayed till the removal of Governor Cheema after his stated stance that he would not administer the oath to office-bearers in an “illegally constituted government”.

The insider said the PPP probables for the cabinet were Hasan Murtaza, Mr Gilani’s son Ali Haider and Makhdoom Usman Mehmood. The party has also suggested the names of Shazia Abid, Ghazanfar Abbas Langa and Raees Nabeel for parliamentary secretaries of various standing committees. PPP Punjab information secretary Shahzad Saeed Cheema could be made adviser to the chief minister.

“Besides, the PML-N has also assured the PPP of giving it some positions in various departments in Punjab,” he said, adding the PPP had also been promised the Senate chairman’s slot in the future scheme of things.

Talking to reporters after the meeting, Qamar Zaman Kaira said the party leaders had come here to congratulate Hamza upon assuming the chief minister’s office. “Since we have to go along together (in the government) we held consultations on various matters. As in the Centre, in Punjab too we will go along with mutual consultations,” he maintained.

To a question about power sharing in the province, Mr Kaira said: “Along with power sharing, we will be burden-sharing as well.”

Mr Gilani said: “Everything” had already been settled between the two parties in the London meeting between party chairman Bilawal and PML-N supremo Nawaz.
