On the registration of money laundering case against journalist Mohsin Baig, the FA investigating officer could not answer the judicial questions on which the Sindh High Court expressed its indignation.

According to details, the hearing of journalist Mohsin Baig’s petition against money laundering allegations and freezing of bank accounts started in a standing bench headed by Justice Muhammad Iqbal Kalhoro of Sindh High Court. The FIA investigating officer took a stand in the court that we have been sending notices to Mohsin Baig since 2021 but they have not appeared anywhere till date, we have not closed the inquiry.

Justice Iqbal Kalhoro reprimanded the FIR officer and said that you should not try to be too smart. When you are asked to speak, the court asked that when Mohsin Baig was not arrested in this FIR. Suppose they were arrested in another FIR, the court asked the investigating officer if he had seen the documents.

The FIA lawyer said that we have to look at the documents now, we should be given time for that, on which the lawyer Safi Latif Khosa said that the documents were given to us by the FIA, then what kind of documents are they asking for respite?

The court asked the investigating officer, "What evidence do you have of money laundering?" Don t try to mislead the court, you explain how all this happened or else action will be taken against you. However, the court adjourned the hearing till April 22 and ordered the FIA to appear with the documents.

The court also ordered that the records of the accounts of Mohsin Baig and his company be produced in the court.

He said voting on the no-confidence resolution against PM Imran — due to take place tomorrow — would bring into power a new government, which would "dissolve the commission or not cooperate with it, making it dysfunctional".

His statement came a couple of hours after Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the commission, led by the retired general, would investigate all the "characters" behind the no-trust move against PM Imran and expose them in front of the nation.

"It [the commission] will see if the communique exists and whether it contains the threat of regime change. The commission will also disclose the local handlers who were used to take forward this foreign conspiracy," the minister had said.

"Of course, not everyone from the opposition was involved in it. But there were some people who knew what the conspiracy was, who was behind it and where it came from."

He added that the commission would review the aforementioned points within 90 days and form its own investigative teams.

President Alvi ordered to meet Baloch students

Islamabad High Court
The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Friday directed President Arif Alvi to meet Baloch students in light of the petition against their harassment at Quaid-e-Azam University.

Chief Justice Athar Minallah heard the petition and ordered the home secretary to meet with and ensure the safety of Baloch students.

The Baloch student’s advocate, Zainab Janjua, informed the high court that students are apprehensive to go back to Balochistan due to fear of abduction.

Highlighting the disappearance of QAU student Hafeez Baloch, the IHC chief justice questioned the deputy attorney general on why students go missing, “why is a child missing for even one day?”

The IHC ordered the country's institutions to eliminate the fear of harassment and abduction of Baloch students in their province, adding that there is no justification for the experiences of the students.

“Whatever the current situation may be, it does not matter, Baloch students are the favourite students of this court,” Chief Justice Athar Minallah stated.

The chief justice urged that relevant authorities must do more to eliminate the reservations of Baloch students and added that not enough initiative was being taken.

“Why should students be afraid to go to their province?” he questioned.

The IHC ordered the secretary to the president to submit a report to the court upon the next hearing and has directed the deputy attorney general to arrange a meeting of Baloch students with President Arif Alvi.

The DAG informed the court that the president has met the home secretary regarding the students, and requires the court to grant more time to meet the students in light of the current political situation.

“It is the responsibility of the federal government, but the government does not meet them. This court expects the president of Pakistan to ensure the safety of children,” the IHC chief justice added.

The court also stated that the president had previously directed all the universities of Islamabad to refrain from racial profiling of children.

The lawyer for Quaid-e-Azam University informed the court that a committee has been formed and is looking into the matter, adding that the university inquired into the professor about whom the students have reservations.

The varsity’s lawyer also stated that a “high-level” committee has been formed on the matter of the missing student and is in the process of conducting an inquiry.

The case has been adjourned for a week.

Joint Opp ‘finalises plan’ for setting up new govt

joint opposition
The joint opposition has said that its leaders have finalized the plan to form a new federal government after preliminary consultations.

Beside the formation of a new federal government, the opposition was reportedly set for the election of the new prime minister after the Supreme Court restored the National Assembly and ordered to hold voting on the no-trust motion against Prime Minister Imran Khan.

A possible new federal government will be constituted in the form of a national government in which all opposition parties will be given proportional representation.

At present, it is being considered that in case a new government is formed, its term should be at least six months or one year.

During this period, electoral reforms and other important legislations related to accountability laws can be passed.

A reasonable time will be given to the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to complete the delimitation of constituencies before holding general elections.

Leader of Opposition in National Assembly Shehbaz Sharif, who is the opposition’s candidate for new prime minister, will announce his possible government priorities after taking the oath.

Among the priorities of the new possible federal government is the formulation of economic policy to control inflation and stop the devaluation of the currency.

The new setup will also review the foreign policy with the aim to establish relations with all countries on equal footings while focusing on peace and not war. Other measures including relief packages for the public will be on the agenda.

As per media, the upcoming set up will take legal action to close the cases filed against opposition leaders on the basis of victimisation.

A constitutional route will be taken to replace the president and the governors of the four provinces.

The decisions of Premier Imran Khan's government could be reviewed and changed.

An immediate action plan will be worked out for the return of Nawaz Sharif and Ishaq Dar after consultations and a review of the political situation.

Russia suspended from UN rights body

UN rights body
The United Nations General Assembly on Thursday suspended Russia from the UN Human Rights Council over reports of "gross and systematic violations and abuses of human rights" in Ukraine, prompting Moscow to announce it was quitting the body.

The US-led push garnered 93 votes in favour, while 24 countries voted no and 58 countries abstained. A two-thirds majority of voting members in the 193-member General Assembly in New York — abstentions do not count — was needed to suspend Russia from the 47-member Geneva-based Human Rights Council.

Speaking after the vote, Russia's deputy UN Ambassador Gennady Kuzmin described the move as an "illegitimate and politically motivated step" and then announced that Russia had decided to quit the Human Rights Council altogether.

"You do not submit your resignation after you are fired," Ukraine's UN Ambassador Sergiy Kyslytsya told reporters.

Russia was in its second year of a three-year term. Under Thursday's resolution, the General Assembly could have later agreed to end the suspension. But that cannot happen now Russia has quit the council, just as the United States did in 2018 over what it called chronic bias against Israel and a lack of reform.

The United States was last year re-elected to the council. Suspensions are rare. Libya was suspended in 2011 because of violence against protesters by forces loyal to then-leader Muammar Gaddafi.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield said the United Nations "sent a clear message that the suffering of victims and survivors will not be ignored."

"We ensured a persistent and egregious human rights violator will not be allowed to occupy a position of leadership on human rights at the UN," she said in remarks to be delivered to the General Assembly later on Thursday.

The Human Rights Council cannot make legally binding decisions. Its decisions send important political messages, however, and it can authorise investigations. Last month the council opened an investigation into allegations of rights violations, including possible war crimes, in Ukraine.

The resolution on Thursday was the third adopted by the 193-member General Assembly since Russia invaded neighbouring Ukraine on February 24. The two previous General Assembly resolutions denouncing Russia were adopted with 141 and 140 votes in favour.

After abstaining on the previous two General Assembly votes, Russia's partner China opposed the resolution on Thursday.

"Such a hasty move at the General Assembly, which forces countries to choose sides, will aggravate the division among member states and intensify the confrontation between the parties concerned — it is like adding fuel to the fire," China's UN Ambassador Zhang Jun said before the vote.

The General Assembly text on Thursday expresses "grave concern at the ongoing human rights and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine," particularly at reports of rights abuses by Russia.

Russia says it is carrying out a "special military operation" that aims to destroy Ukraine's military infrastructure and denies attacking civilians. Ukraine and allies say Moscow invaded without provocation.

Russia had warned countries that a yes vote or abstention will be viewed as an "unfriendly gesture" with consequences for bilateral ties.
