FM Qureshi contact with UN Secretary General to discuss regional, global issues

shah mehmood qureshi
Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi spoke on the telephone with United Nations Secretary General (UNSG) Antonio Guterres on Monday here and exchanged views on current regional and global issues.

The Foreign Minister briefed the UNSG chief on the so-called “accidental” firing of a missile by India on 9 March 2022 which fell to the ground in Pakistan’s territory. He stressed that it was a blatant violation of Pakistan’s airspace and reflective of India’s disregard for aviation safety as well as regional peace and stability. The Foreign Minister emphasized that Pakistan continued to act with restraint and responsibility.

Noting the multiple shortcomings and technical lapses of a serious nature in India’s management of strategic weapons, the Foreign Minister underscored Pakistan’s demand for a joint probe into the incident. The Foreign Minister added that the incident was consistent with India’s irresponsible conduct and needed to be addressed by the international community, including the UN Security Council.

Foreign Minister Qureshi and Secretary General Guterres also discussed Pakistan-UN cooperation including in the area of peacekeeping as well as for overcoming the challenges posed by the triple global crisis of COVID-19, sustainable development and climate change.

On the situation in Ukraine, the Foreign Minister shared Pakistan’s perspective on the ongoing conflict, its adverse economic impact on developing countries, and Pakistan’s efforts in support of a solution through dialogue and diplomacy. He pointed out that Prime Minister Imran Khan had been stressing from the outset that developing countries suffer the most from conflict anywhere in the world.

The Secretary General apprised the Foreign Minister of the recent initiatives being explored by the UN to address sky-rocketing inflation worldwide in the wake of the situation in Ukraine. He also highlighted the need to collectively undertake measures for countering the disruptions in global supply chains which were leading to food and energy shortages with a particularly adverse impact on developing countries. The Foreign Minister lauded the Secretary General’s efforts in that regard and assured him of Pakistan’s full support and cooperation in these endeavours.

Long March towards Islamabad on March 23, PDM

PDM
Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chairman Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Monday called on the entire nation to march towards the federal capital on March 23 for an anti-government long march.

Addressing the media after the meeting of the joint opposition in Islamabad, Maulana Fazlur Rehman asked the workers of joint opposition parties to reach Islamabad on March 23 for a massive power show.

The PDM chief said that we will hold a historic rally from the doors of Parliament house to Shahra-e-Dastoor through which the members of the parliament would be provided a safe passage to reach the House to attend the parliament session.

He said that the people should be ready for staying in Islamabad and we don’t know for how long the march would last.

He said that Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Awami National Party (ANP) have also been invited to take part in the long march. He expressed the confidence that their response would be positive.

Fazlur Rehman said that the no-confidence motion tabled by the joint opposition against the prime minister was in-line with the expectations and the hopes of the Pakistani people.

Fazl lashed out at the PTI-led government for going against the opposition’s no-trust move by “warning the lawmakers from going to the Parliament” and opting for “unconstitutional” tactics.

He said that the Speaker National Assembly was bound by the constitution to call a session on voting on the no-confidence motion after the requisition for the session has been submitted.

“If the speaker does not follow this, he is liable to legal action,” Fazl warned, adding that the meeting’s participants also stressed that the session’s first agenda point should be of the no-confidence motion.

Earlier, leader of the opposition in the National Assembly (NA) Shahbaz Sharif hosted a dinner in honor of the top leadership of the opposition. The PML-N president himself received the delegation of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP).

Security for Pompeo costing $2 million per month amid threats from Iran: report

Pompeo and Hook
The State Department is reportedly paying more than $2 million per month on security for former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and a former top aide, as the two men face “serious and credible” threats from Iran.

The Associated Press, citing a State Department report from February labeled “sensitive but unclassified,” reported on Saturday that the department has spent $13.1 million between August 2021 and February 2022 on protection for Pompeo and former Iran envoy Brian Hook. The two men have reportedly been receiving 24-hour security.

Pompeo and Hook headed the U.S. “maximum pressure” campaign against Iran during the Trump administration. The report obtained by the AP said threats from Iran have continued since former President Trump departed office.

Pompeo automatically qualified for 180 days of protection from the State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security after departing office because of his high-ranking position, according to the AP.

Current Secretary of State Antony Blinken, however, has reportedly extended that security in 60-day blocks a number of times because of “a serious and credible threat from a foreign power or agent of a foreign power arising from duties performed by former Secretary Pompeo while employed by the department,” according to the report cited by the AP.

Hook was also given the special protection after leaving office for the same reason, according to the AP, and his protection has also reportedly been extended in 60-day chunks.

Pompeo announced in August 2020 that Hook was resigning from the State Department. Pompeo served as the top U.S. diplomat until Trump departed office in January 2021.

Asked for comment on the AP’s report, a State Department spokesperson told The Hill on Sunday that it does not “discuss the specifics of protective operations.”

The spokesperson did, however, say that Congress approved new terms that allow ex-State Department officials to receive protection if they face “a serious and credible threat from a foreign power or the agent of a foreign power” related to their time in office.

“Under the protective services provision, the Secretary of State, in consultation with the Director of National Intelligence, determines and reports to Congressional leadership and the appropriate congressional committees if a former or retired senior State Department official would receive protection,” the spokesperson added.

The State Department and Director of National Intelligence have to decide by March 16 whether or not to extend Pompeo and Hook’s protection for another 60 days, according to the AP.

The State Department created the report because its special protection budget is set to run out of funds in June unless it receives more money, the news wire noted.

"As new requirements arise and threats evolve, we will seek the necessary resources to ensure mission success," the spokesperson added to The Hill.

News of Pompeo and Hook’s protection comes as the global effort to revive a nuclear deal with Iran has been thrown into doubt amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Pompeo’s name has been tossed around as a potential Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential election. Asked over the summer about any plans for the race, Pompeo said “I want to continue to have an impact on the things that I care about, both here and abroad.”
