Strong gusts of wind will start blowing in Karachi

weather
The Pakistan Meteorological Department has advised the citizens of Karachi to take precautions, forecasting a change in weather as strong gusts of wind will start blowing in the city at a speed up to 55 kilometres per hour today.

The winds could turn the weather dusty and colder, as per the Met department.

"High winds may sweep through Karachi from Wednesday noon till Thursday morning, a result of a pressure gradient due to a westerly system that is going to grip the central and northern Pakistan," Chief Meteorological Officer Sardar Sarfaraz said.

The Met department's alert stated that strong winds of 20-25 knots with gusts up to 30 knots are expected to hit West/South Balochistan and Karachi from February 2 afternoon until Thursday afternoon and may damage weak structures.

Owing to the weather alert, fishermen have been directed to be cautious when fishing as the sea level is expected to rise, per the Met office.

Sarfaraz said that the velocity of winds is not expected to be as high as that of the winds storm that swept through Karachi some days ago when it gusted at a speed of 80kmph. However, he directed the authorities concerned to stay vigilant and make arrangements to avoid any damages.

PM Imran launches health card scheme in Bahawalpur

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday launched the Naya Pakistan National Health Card scheme in Bahawalpur.

According to APP, about 10.5 million people from the districts of Rahim Yar Khan, Bahawalpur and Bahawalnagar in the Bahawalpur Division were included in the programme, raising the number of people and households in the programme in Punjab by 63 per cent.

Addressing the ceremony on the occasion, the prime minister said the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) struggle was to ensure the supremacy of the rule of law and making Pakistan a welfare state. The prime minister said the government has launched the Ehsaas project, Kamyab Jawan Programme, and the Sehat card to turn the country into a welfare state.

Poor countries across the world could not develop because their rulers plundered the national resources, the premier said, adding that the nation had to stand up against these "robbers" to end corruption.

He also referred to a plea filed by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) against the lifetime disqualification under Article 62(1)(f). According to the PM, such a plea justified "theft" by the powerful while the poor were languishing in prison cells on similar charges.

Imran said the Sharif family has properties worth billions in the most expensive city of Europe. "When Nawaz was asked about the properties owned by his children, he said didn't know how his children acquired these properties and when the children were asked, they said they 'weren't citizens of Pakistan'".

Referring to the region, the premier said the South Punjab Secretariat will be inaugurated during his next visit to the region, adding that southern Punjab has been ignored by the government for a long time.

The National Health Card has already been distributed among people in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab, Islamabad, District Tharparkar, Gilgit Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

UK PM Boris Johnson cannot answer party questions because of police, minister says

UK PM Boris Johnson
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson cannot answer specific questions over lockdown parties in Downing Street because he does not want to prejudice a police investigation into 12 gatherings, his deputy said on Tuesday.

British police are reviewing more than 500 pieces of paper and over 300 photographs as part of an investigation into whether the Downing Street gatherings broke Covid-19 lockdown laws.

“If he does start answering specific questions that have been referred to the police, he will be accused, in fact fairly and rightly, of prejudicing or preventing or interfering in that investigation,” Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab told Sky News.

After initially saying that no rules were broken, Johnson has repeatedly declined to answer specifics about his own attendance at some of the gatherings.

He later admitted being at one gathering but said he thought it was a work event. On Monday, he repeatedly declined to say if he had been at a gathering at his own apartment above the Downing Street office, citing the police investigation into the incident.

Opposition parties said a police inquiry should not preclude Johnson from answering specifics, especially in parliament — the supreme crucible of British democracy.

“What happened was the Metropolitan Police asked that the full report not be published at the moment, but the idea that that prevents the prime minister from saying whether he was at a party on a particular day is absolute nonsense,” Opposition Labour Party leader Keir Starmer told BBC TV.
