Gmail for Android surpasses 10 billion installs

Gmail
Gmail for Android has crossed 10 billion installs on the Google Play Store.

Gmail is the goto email app for majority of users around the world, the milestone is therefore not surprising at all. It is however surprising that it took so long, considering the app comes pre-installed on nearly all Android phones.

Gmail launched as just a platform fpr sending and receiving emails. It has now evolved to include chat and video meetings with Google Meet.

That said, Gmail's popularity is not without consequences. Scammers are increasingly using Gmail for baiting attacks, to steal user data. These attacks sometimes come with payloads or embedded links in emails, while some attackers might include questions that might have a higher chance of receiving a response.

A report by Baracudda found that 35% of the 10,500 organizations they surveyed received bait attack emails in just one month of September this year.

Barracuda's research depicts that 91% of these emails are sent from newly-created Gmail accounts, primarily because most people consider Gmail to be more legitimate and secure. Email security solutions also treat Google's email service as highly reputed. The platform allows users to create pseudonymous accounts without much of a hassle.

Moreover, attackers use Gmail to launch their baits because the platform supports the "read recipient" function, telling them that their email was opened, if not responded to.

Modi’s extremist agenda a ‘real threat to region’s peace’: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday said the extremist agenda of India’s government of Narendra Modi was a ‘real and present threat’ to peace of the region.

He urged the international community to take note of the targeting of religious minorities in India.

“It is high time [that] international community take note. Acted under the extremist ideology of the BJP Modi government, all religious minorities in India have been targeted with impunity by Hindutva groups,” he tweeted.

The prime minister also pointed out that the silence of Modi government over the call of Muslim genocide by extremist Hindutva leaders put a question on its support to the call.

“The continuing silence of Modi government on the call at an extremist Hindutva summit in December for genocide of minorities in India, especially the 200 million Muslim community, begs the question whether the BJP govt supports this call,” he said.

Shehbaz demands formation of judicial commission to probe Murree tragedy

Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif
Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly and PML-N President Shahbaz Sharif on Monday demanded the formation of a judicial commission to probe the Murree tragedy in which more than 20 people lost their lives after being stranded in heavy snow.

Speaking during a session of the National Assembly, Shahbaz condemned the "mismanagement" on part of the government that, according to him, led to the tragic deaths.

It should be recalled that on Saturday night, more than 20 tourists died of carbon monoxide poisoning in Murree after their vehicles got stuck in heavy snow.

"Twenty-three people lost their lives in the tragic incident, while tourists were stuck in snow for more than 20 hours but no one bothered to help them," Shahbaz said.

He added that people kept calling for help but neither the traffic police nor any other body was there to assist them.

"The Murree tragedy was nothing but an administrative failure and it demonstrates the incompetency and criminal negligence of the incumbent government," he said.

He further said that it was not the first time that Murree received heavy snowfall and this time, snowstorms had been forecast, so the authorities concerned could have taken preventative measures beforehand.

Referring to the Federal Minister of Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry’s earlier statement in which he appreciated the "boost in Murree's tourism," Shahbaz said: "When the tragic incident happened a 'Neru' was sleeping in Islamabad, while the other one was busy rigging Punjab’s local body elections."

Shahbaz said that every year, millions of tourists visit Murree and a road map of preventive measures was also given to the hill station's administration but the "government dealt with the Murree issue in the same way as it did to destroy the country’s economy."

The PML-N president criticised Prime Minister Imran Khan’s statement in which he said that the district administration was unprepared to deal with the situation.

"If the administration was not prepared for the situation, then what are you doing? Resign from the post and go back home," Shahbaz said.

The Opposition leader further added that the “nation will not pardon the government for its criminal negligence."

Australian deportation case: Tennis player Novak Djokovic released

Australian deportation case: Tennis player Novak Djokovic released
An Australian appointed authority decided on Monday that Novak Djokovic be set free from migration detainment quickly, tracking down the public authority's choice to disavow the tennis star's visa to enter the nation was "outlandish.

Judge Anthony Kelly ordered Djokovic be freed within 30 minutes and his passport and other personal documents returned to him, rekindling the world number one's bid to win a record 21st Grand Slam title at the upcoming Australian Open.

Kelly, who earlier in proceedings had criticised the hours-long questioning of Djokovic at Melbourne's airport when he landed on Wednesday, said both the interview and the visa cancellation "was unreasonable".

Djokovic was not given enough time to speak to tennis organisers and lawyers to respond fully after he was notified of the intent to cancel his visa, the judge said.

Lawyers for the federal government told the court the country's immigration minister was reserving the right to exercise his personal power to again revoke Djokovic's visa.

After confirming that such a step, if taken, would bar Djokovic from the country for three years, Kelly warned the government lawyers that "the stakes have now risen, rather than receded."

Spokespeople for the minister, Alex Hawke, did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Djokovic's plight has been closely followed around the world, creating political tensions between Belgrade and Canberra and sparking heated debate over national vaccination mandates.

Djokovic, 34, has been held in an immigration detention hotel alongside long-term asylum seeker detainees since Thursday. He was at his lawyers' chambers on Monday to hear the ruling, which included the government being ordered to pay his costs.

His lawyers argued that a recent COVID-19 infection qualified Djokovic for the medical exemption from a requirement for non-Australian citizens entering the country to be double vaccinated.

The Australian government, however, had argued non-citizens had no right of guaranteed entry to Australia and questioned his claimed exemption.

Major roads in Murree cleared after removing snow

Major roads in Murree cleared after removing snow
The authorities on Monday have cleared major roads in Murree after removing snow to normalise traffic flow but the roads are still slippery and people have been advised to abide by the instructions of the administration and police.

According to details, cars stuck on Kuldana-Barian Road have also been handed over to their owners. The tourists left their vehicles on roads and went to the hotels and camps during snowfall.

Security personnel are still performing their duties at different areas in Murree to ensure smooth travelling of the tourists. No one, except the locals are allowed to enter the hill station.

Earlier, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) announced that all major roads were opened for traffic in Murree after relief operation of Pakistan Army.

Officials said nearly 100,000 visitors in thousands of vehicles had thronged the town by Friday, causing an enormous traffic jam even before the blizzard.

They said 23 people died in vehicles trapped in the snow overnight Friday -- either from cold, or carbon monoxide poisoning from exhaust fumes generated by drivers running engines to keep warm.

Authorities had promised an investigation.

"Our first priority was rescue, then relief," Hasaan Khawar, spokesman for the Punjab provincial government, said in a video on his Twitter page Sunday.

"Then a high-level inquiry will be launched and if there is any kind of negligence, then action will be taken against all those involved."
