'Wrong candidate selection' major cause for PTI's loss, concedes PM Imran Khan

PM Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan Tuesday conceded defeat in the first phase of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local government elections 2021, admitting that wrong candidate selection was a major cause for the PTI's shock defeat in the recent polls.

The prime minister's tweet comes a day after Opposition parties, particularly the JUI-F, took an unassailable lead in Khyber Pakhtunkwa's ongoing local body elections, leaving the PTI behind, according to unofficial results.

The ruling party could not grab even a single mayor seat out of the four. The PTI could only manage to win one tehsil in Peshawar out of six tehsils.

"PTI made mistakes in 1st phase of KP LG elections & paid the price. Wrong candidate selection was a major cause. From now on I will personally be overseeing PTI's LG election strategy in 2nd phase of KP LG elections & LG elections across Pak. InshaAllah PTI will come out stronger," tweeted the prime minister.

In the 64 tehsil council unofficial results obtained so far, the JUI-F has emerged victorious in 16 tehsil council seats while the PTI has won in 14.

Independent candidates have won 10, ANP six, PML-N three, Jamaat-e-Islami two, and Tehreek-e-Istiqlal in the tehsil council elections.

A day earlier, Federal Minister for Science and Technology Shibli Faraz said that the PTI didn't do too bad in the first phase of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa local government elections.

PTI has learned a lot from the ongoing local government elections in KP and the party will use this experience to prepare for the next elections, Faraz had said.

"We have been given a chance to change our strategy and eliminate our shortcomings," Faraz had said while expressing his views over the results of the LG polls where the Opposition party JUI-F emerged victorious, bagging the majority of the seats.

The Opposition parties, particularly JUI-F, have taken an unassailable lead in KP's ongoing local body elections, leaving PTI behind, according to unofficial results.

According to Faraz, PTI's performance in the contest was still not that bad.

"The reason behind PTI's failure in the election is that most of PTI's candidates contested against aspirants of their own party," the minister had said.

He had said that another reason was that some people were resentful over the current wave of inflation.

Pakistan thrash Bangladesh to set up South Korea semi-final clash in Asian Champions Trophy

Pakistan thrash Bangladesh
A thumping 6-2 victory against Bangladesh saw Pakistan get their first victory of the Asian Champions Trophy, jumping up to third in the table and setting up a semi-final against South Korea.

Pakistan went into their last round-robin game knowing that a two-goal victory would see them leapfrog third-placed Japan, who were hammered 6-0 by India earlier in the day.

But doubles Aijaz Ahmed and Ahmed Nadeem and goals apiece by Afraz and Mohammad Razzaq saw them clinch a four-goal victory with Bangladesh getting both their goals through Arshad Hosein.

Pakistan edged Japan on goal difference after both finished level on five points, one point behind second-placed South Korea while India topped the standings with 10 points.

Bangladesh went into the game having lost their first three matches and knew they had to upset Pakistan in order to make the semi-finals.

Arshad gave them a shock 13th-minute lead only for Ahmed to level matters in the very next minute.

It was the start of Pakistan’s goal rush which saw them score a further four goals in the next 20 minutes.

Aijaz made it 2-1 in the 18th before Afraz got his goal in the 24th. Ahmed got his second goal two minutes later with Razzaq making it 4-1 in the 34th.

Arshad pulled one back for Bangladesh in the 34th but Aijaz sealed victory for his side four minutes later.

Earlier, Harmanpreet Singh converted a penalty corner to give India a 10th minute lead against Japan and Dilpreet Singh made it 2-0 in the 23rd.

Jarmanpreet Singh added the third in the 34th before goals by Sumit, Harmanpreet and Shamsher Singh in the space of seven minutes completed a resounding victory for India.

Japan have work to do if they are to avoid another hammering by India when they meet the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallists in the semi-final on Tuesday.

Pakistan’s match with South Korea on the same day is expected to be a much evenly-contested one after they played a 3-3 draw against each other on Saturday.
