Govt to hold in-camera briefing on national security today without Opposition

Govt to hold in-camera briefing on national security today without Opposition
The PTI-led government has decided to hold its in-camera briefing of the national security committee by National Security Adviser Moeed Yusuf today (Monday) in the absence of Opposition parties.

The Opposition, on Thursday, had announced a boycott of the meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security (PCNS), citing the government's "dictatorial" behaviour as its reason. But the government urged the Opposition to review their decision and earnestly attend the briefing.

The publication stated that the government has decided to hold the fourth in-camera briefing today at noon, once again extending an invitation to leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif and PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari despite their refusal to attend the meeting.

“The fourth in-camera meeting of the PCNS will be held as per its schedule on Monday, the 6th December, at 12:00 noon in the Committee Room No 2, Parliament House,” read a revised notice of the National Assembly Secretariat.

The revised notice has been issued in continuation of the November 30 notification through which National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser had summoned the national security meeting to discuss the security situation in the country and the region. The NSA is scheduled to give a presentation on the national security policy in the briefing.

Accusing the government of riding roughshod over the Constitution and making Parliament a “rubber stamp”, the joint opposition had announced a boycott of the in-camera briefing slated to be held on December 6.

The opposition was also irked by the ruling party’s act of bulldozing bills during the joint session of Parliament and the conspicuous absence of Prime Minister Imran Khan from the previous sessions of the PCNS.

Dhaka test: Rain delays action again on Day 3

Dhaka test: Rain delays action again on Day 3
Rain played spoiler once again on Monday as day 3 of the Pakistan-Bangladesh Dhaka Test was delayed due to showers.Play on day three was scheduled to start at 9:30am local time.

Pakistan, currently leading the two-match Test series 1-0, are in a formidable position with former captain Azhar Ali and Babar Azam steadily scoring runs for Pakistan.

"The covers are still on, the players are still at the hotel. The light has gotten somewhat better, but there is light rain which means there is no question right now of even trying to take the covers off," says ESPNcricinfo.

Pakistan are 188/2 from 63.2 overs.

Both batsmen have scored half-centuries after Taijul Islam broke through the Abid Ali-Abdullah Shafique partnership by dismissing both openers.

However, Babar Azam (71) and Azhar Ali (52) went to work on the Bangladeshi bowlers, driving the ball to the boundary on several occasions and also running quick singles.

Azhar Ali has struck seven 4s from his inning while the Pakistani captain has hit eight 4s and a six in his.

Rain put a damper on day 2 of the Dhaka Test as well, with play eventually being called off Sunday following multiple delays and resumptions.

Play had resumed after lunch, following rain and bad light that saw the morning session in Dhaka cancelled. However, the play had to eventually be called off for the day due to persistent rain and a wet outfield.

PDM gets ready for long march, resignations

PDM gets ready for long march, resignations
The steering committee of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) formulated recommendations for the long march and plan for resignations during a meeting chaired by PML-N leader Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, as the united opposition gears up to protest the incumbent government and rising inflation.

The PDM steering committee will present these recommendations before the heads of the alliance's political parties in a separate meeting.

During the steering committee's meeting, the members agreed that the PDM should organise a long march and its members of assemblies should tender resignations. However, the date and time for the march and resignations are yet to be decided and are expected to be finalised in today's (Monday) meeting under the chairmanship of PDM chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman.

Sources privy to the matter said that conventions and protest rallies will be held in all four provinces to prepare for the long march.

NA-133 Lahore by-election: Counting of votes underway in PML-N stronghold

election
The counting of votes continues across the 254 polling stations in the NA-133 constituency, considered a stronghold of the PML-N, where a by-election was held today and where the PML-N looks to retain the seat for the fourth time.

The polling started at 8am this morning and continued till 5pm without any break after which the gates to the polling stations were closed off to any more voters. amid the chilly weather in Lahore, the voter response to the by-poll remained rather 'cool'.

Polling stations saw a vote or two cast in the morning hours which increased to a few more by the afternoon. When time for polling to end began to draw close, voter participation improved slightly.

Unofficial, preliminary results obtained by Geo News for 164 polling stations show PML-N's Shaista Pervaiz Malik in the lead with 32,226 votes.

PPP's Aslam Gill is in second place with 20,335 votes.

The NA-133 seat fell vacant after the death of PML-N MNA Pervaiz Malik who died of heart complications on October 11.

According to the Punjab election commission, there are 254 polling stations in the constituency, including 22 polling stations of A category, 198 of B category and 34 polling stations of C category.

Of these, 199 polling stations have been declared sensitive. Around 200 separate polling stations have been set up for men and women and 54 mixed polling stations have also been set up.

The total number of voters in the NA-133 constituency is 440,485, of which 233,585 are male voters and 206,927 female voters.

Candidates vying for seat
There were 11 candidates contesting the polls, including the former seat holder's widow, Shaista Pervaiz Malik, and PPP's Aslam Gill.

The PPP actively campaigned for the NA-133 by-election in Lahore, which is considered a stronghold of the rival PML-N, in the hopes of reviving the party in Punjab.

The PML-N has retained the seat thrice in the past with Pervaiz Malik winning it in 2018 with 89,699 votes, Waheed Alam Khan in 2013 with over 100,000 votes and Naseer Bhutta in 2008 with a margin of over 32,000 votes.

After the Election Commission of Pakistan rejected the nomination papers of PTI candidate Jamshed Iqbal Cheema and his covering candidate, his wife Mussarat Cheema, no PTI candidate is in the race.
