Pakistan rejects India's 'mischievous spin' given to Kartarpur photoshoot

Pakistan rejects India's 'mischievous spin' given to Kartarpur photoshoot
Pakistan has summoned a senior diplomat from the High Commission for the Republic of India to convey the "categorical rejection" of India's response to the recently surfaced incident involving a Pakistani model who posed bareheaded at Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that Pakistan "categorically rejects the mischievous spin given by India" to the matter.

It was conveyed to the Indian diplomat that the incident was swiftly addressed and clarified, stating that the "Government of Pakistan accords the highest primacy to the rights of the minorities. Sanctity of religious places and revered sites of every community is ensured in the country."
The statement further stated that the Indian diplomat was told to urge their government to investigate the incidents of gross and systematic persecution of minorities in India which continue with impunity and state complicity, instead of pointing fingers at Pakistan.

"Given its systematic marginalisation and brutalisation of minorities, India has no locus standi to even feign concern for minorities elsewhere."

Pakistan urged the Indian authorities to focus on ensuring effective protection of their own minorities and places of worship from repeated instances of desecration, hate crimes and mob lynching in the country.

NCOC urges provinces to speed up the vaccination process
The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) urged provinces in a morning session on Thursday to speed up the coronavirus vaccination process in light of the rising trend of the Omicron variant around the world and decided to strictly enforce the vaccination regime.

Stating that vaccination is the only method to prevent the spread of the new COVID-19 variant, the forum thoroughly discussed the city-wise COVID-19 vaccination process across the country, an NCOC statement said.

According to the statement, the COVID-19 positivity ratio, disease prevalence, number of deaths, and new admissions were also discussed in the session.
The vaccination targets for each district have been evaluated, and all-out efforts are being made to engage provinces in meeting the specified immunisation goals, the statement said.

It added that the overall number of vaccines, administration, procurement, and vaccination balance were also discussed during the meeting.

Furthermore, the current state of the oxygen generation and distribution processes throughout the country was also reviewed during the meeting.

With a special emphasis on remote places with logistical challenges, NCOC recommended the development of oxygen plants in various locations throughout the country.

Pakistan has announced a ban on entry from six southern African countries as well as Hong Kong "due to threat" from the new COVID-19 variant Omicron.

A statement by NCOC on Saturday said that a ban on direct or indirect inbound travel from South Africa, Hong Kong, Mozambique, Namibia, Lesotho, Botswana, and Eswatini has been imposed, with the countries placed in Category C "with immediate effect".

President Alvi signs EVM bill passed by Parliament

President Alvi signs EVM bill passed by Parliament
President Dr Arif Alvi Thursday signed the Election (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which had earlier been passed by the Parliament and asked opposing voices not to be afraid of “simple” electronic voting machines (EVMs) which he hoped would help in holding a fair election and bringing an end to rigging.

“People will have to trust it. It involves no advancement. It is too simple. The country achieves progress by adopting new things,” the president said while addressing a ceremony.

Passed by the Parliament, the bill provides for holding of the next general election through the EVM as well as granting the right of vote to the overseas Pakistanis through i-voting.

He said the EVM would ensure holding a fair election which had long been desired in Pakistan as every election followed controversies and rigging charges which also impacted the credibility of the respective governments.

He said that after its success in the upcoming elections, EVM would be marketed as the “product of Pakistan.”

Calling it a “great step”, the president said the legislation was made possible owing to the consistency of Prime Minister Imran Khan and hard work by the cabinet members despite huge resistance.

He said that it would help print the vote at the spot instead of printing the ballot paper at the press.

The president went on to say that the machine would help to do away practice of printing extra ballot papers which used to be sold out later, the kidnapping of presiding officers, and confusion in the counting process.

He said while using EVMs that voters would cast their vote by touching the screen instead of stamping the ballot paper.

“The process is the same. Then what is the resistance for?” he questioned.

He explained that for an accurate result, votes would be counted through an in-built calculator, though manual counting would also be available for sceptics.

He clarified that the Ministry of Science and Technology was not a manufacturer of the EVMs rather it just made a prototype for the experiment. It would be the Election Commission of Pakistan to select EVMs based on the required specifications.

Coming to i-voting for overseas Pakistanis, the president recounted his as well as PTI’s legal and political struggle to grant voting rights to expatriates.

Rubbishing the notion of hacking, the president quoted the 2018 data of digital transactions worth $5 trillion a day which he said involved far lesser chances of hacking than a plane crash.

Terming the innovations as key to development, President Alvi said following the world’s footsteps was no service to the country.

He said due to multiple complications, physical voting for expatriates was not possible.

The president said some countries had rejected the EVMs because they had their own better systems in place. Contrarily, Pakistan needed it owing to its system’s weakness.

He said the EVM would help to alleviate the confusion caused by the post-election rigging charges and bring about a strong government to support democracy.

“Don’t worry, the nation will be convinced. Just like this one, the country will make progress in other fields too,” the president remarked.

Finance adviser Shoukat Tareen files nomination papers for vacant Senate seat from KP
Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin on Thursday filed his nomination papers for a vacant Senate seat from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Last month, PTI's Muhammad Ayub Afridi submitted his resignation as member of the upper house to Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and vacated his seat. According to media reports, the government wanted to get Tarin elected to Senate on the seat vacated by Afridi to ensure he can become the finance minister again.

Tarin's lawyer filed the nomination papers at the Election Commission of Pakistan's (ECP) Peshawar Office. Provincial ministers Taimur Saleem Jhagra and Kamran Khan Bangash were Tarin's proposer and seconder, respectively.

Speaking to the media, Bangash said that all kinds of people lived in the province, adding that Tarin's "roots" were from KP. "People from other political parties have also gotten Senate tickets from KP," he said.
He added that Tarin's vote was registered in Mardan and that his wife also belonged to the province.

Polling for the vacant Senate seat will be held in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly on Dec 20. As per the schedule, the candidates will file their nomination papers with the returning officer from Nov 30 till Dec 2, while the names of the nominated candidates will be published on Dec 3.
