PTI Senator Ayub Afridi relinquishes seat for Shaukat Tarin’s election

PTI Senator Ayub Afridi and Shaukat Tarin
PTI’s Ayub Afridi has resigned from the Senate to make way for the election of PM’s Adviser on Finance Shaukat Tarin as a member of the Parliament.

Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani has accepted Ayub Afridi's resignation, who has now been inducted as a cabinet member.

The Senate Secretariat has declared Ayub Afridi's seat vacant and issued a notification to which the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has also been informed.

As per the rules, when a seat falls vacant, the ECP is bound to hold elections on it within 30 days.

According to sources, Ayub Afridi has been appointed as PM’s Adviser on Overseas Pakistanis.

Commenting on the development, Ayub Afridi said he submitted his resignation to the prime minister earlier but was asked to wait because of the joint meeting.

“The prime minister entrusted me with the Senate seat and I returned it happily," he said.

Afridi said he would have no objection if the prime minister did not give him any official responsibility.

“If given the opportunity by the prime minister I would serve the nation and the country,” Afridi added.

Tarin made adviser

After failure to get Shaukat Tarin elected as a member of the Parliament within the stipulated six-month time-frame, the government had appointed him as Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenues with the status of Federal Minister on October 17.

A couple of months ago, the government had to face a severe political blow when PTI’s candidate from the federal capital Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh faced defeat against PPP candidate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani.

Later, the prime minister replaced former Adviser to PM on Finance and Revenues Dr Abdul Hafeez Shaikh unceremoniously and then appointed Shaukat Tarin as Federal Minister for Finance with effect from April 17, 2021.

Under the Constitutional obligations, it was mandatory to elect Tarin as a member of the Parliament within the six month-period.

This deadline had expired on October 16, 2021 and the government could not decide to elect him.

The government was left with no other option but to appoint him as an Adviser to PM on Finance and Revenues as a stop-gap arrangement until his election as a Senator.

Samsung to pick Taylor, Texas, for its $17 bln chip plant

Samsung
South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics Co Ltd said on Tuesday it had not made a final decision on the location of a new $17 billion chip plant in the United States, after the Wall Street Journal reported it would be Taylor, Texas.

The WSJ said Texas Governor Greg Abbott was scheduled to make an "economic announcement" on Tuesday at 5 p.m. According to reuters report a site in Texas's Williamson County, near the city of Taylor, offered the best incentives package of the sites Samsung was considering.

The new plant is set to make advanced logic chips used to power mobile devices and autonomous vehicles, as the global auto industry faces a significant semiconductor shortage.

The factory would mark Samsung's second chip factory in Texas, where it already manufactures chips at a plant in Austin.

Samsung is joining rivals TSMC (2330.TW) and Intel (INTC.O) in the race to expand chip contract manufacturing in the United States, where the sector is seen as an area of strategic competition with China.

U.S. President Joe Biden's administration has promised billions of dollars in federal funding to boost chip manufacturing and research to ensure it has an edge over China in advanced technologies and to address shortages for critical industries like autos.

Dart Mission to smack Dimorphos asteroid set for launch

Dart Mission
A spacecraft is set to launch and test technology that may one day be needed to tip a dangerous asteroid off course. Nasa's Dart mission will evaluate a longstanding proposal for neutralising a sizeable space rock headed for Earth.

The spacecraft will crash into an object called Dimorphos to see how much its speed and path can be altered. If a chunk of cosmic debris measuring a few hundred metres across were to collide with our planet, it could unleash continent-wide devastation.

It's the first attempt to deflect an asteroid for the purpose of learning how to protect Earth, though this particular asteroid presents no threat.

"Dart will only be changing the period of the orbit of Dimorphos by a tiny amount. And really that's all that's needed in the event that an asteroid is discovered well ahead of time," said Kelly Fast, from Nasa's planetary defense coordination office,

At 06:20 GMT on Wednesday, a Falcon 9 rocket carrying the Dart spacecraft will blast off from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Pakistan rejects 'baseless' Indian claims of downing PAF aircraft in 2019

Pakistan rejects 'baseless' Indian claims of downing PAF aircraft in Feb 2019
Pakistan on Tuesday rejected the “entirely baseless” Indian claims that a Pakistani F-16 aircraft was shot down by an Indian pilot before he was captured by Pakistan in Azad Jammu and Kashmir in February 2019.

“The citation of the award to the downed Indian pilot is a classic case of Indian fabrications and pure fantasy to appease domestic audience and hide the embarrassment,” the Foreign Office said.

The FO said international experts and US officials had already confirmed that no Pakistani F-16 was shot down on the day, after taking stock of Pakistani F-16 aircraft.

“India’s insistence on propagating a lie that has been thoroughly exposed is ludicrous and nonsensical,” it said.

The FO said granting military honours for imaginary feats of gallantry is contrary to every norm of military conduct.

“By giving such award, also as an after thought, India has only made a mockery of itself,” it said.

It is to recall that in a daring day light action, two Indian aircraft were shot down by Pakistan Air Force on February 27, 2019. One of the Indian Mig-21 Bison aircraft fell down in Azad Jammu and Kashmir.

The pilot who ejected was captured by Pakistan and later released as a goodwill gesture. His return to India was testimony of Pakistan’s desire for peace despite India’s hostility and ill-conceived aggressive action. Another Indian aircraft SU 30 shot down by Pakistan Air Force fell on the other side of LOC.
