NEPRA approves tariff hike of Rs2.52 per unit

NEPRA
The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) on Tuesday allowed power distribution companies to ramp up the electricity tariff by Rs2.52 per unit on account of the fuel cost adjustment for September 2021.

According to a notification issued on Tuesday in this regard, the Central Power Purchasing Agency-Guarantee (CPPA-G) had requested a positive FCA of Rs2.65 per unit.

The FCA for September 2021 will be charged with the bill of November 2021, which will be paid by all consumer categories of distribution companies, except for the lifeline consumers of all the XWDISCOs.

The Rs2.52 increase will put a burden of Rs40 billion on consumers.

Per the notification, the said adjustment shall be shown separately in the consumers’ bills on the basis of units billed to the consumers in the month of September 2021 by the XWDISCOs.

“XWDISCOs shall reflect the fuel charges adjustment in respect of September 2021 in the billing month of November 2021,” it read.

The prices were last raised in October this year when NEPRA notified an Rs1.95 per unit rise in the power tariff over CPPA's request of an increase of Rs2.7, on account of FCA for August 2021.

Iran wants US assurances it will never abandon nuclear deal in case of revival

ran wants US assurances it will never abandon nuclear deal in case of revival
Iran said on Monday that the United States should provide guarantees that it will not abandon Tehran's 2015 nuclear deal with world powers again if talks to revive the agreement succeed.

Indirect talks between Iran and the United States, which stalled in June after the election of hardline Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, are set to resume on November 29 in Vienna to find ways to reinstate the 2015 accord.

It has eroded since 2018 when then-US president Donald Trump withdrew from it and reimposed sanctions on Iran, prompting Tehran to breach mandated limits on uranium enrichment the following year.

"The US should show that it has the capability and will to provide guarantees that it will not abandon the deal again if the talks to revive the deal succeed," Foreign Ministry spokesman Saeed Khatibzadeh told a virtual news conference.

Echoing Iran's official stance, Khatibzadeh said Washington must lift all sanctions imposed on Tehran in a verifiable process and "recognise its fault in ditching the pact".

That ongoing stance is likely to cause concern in the US and with its European allies — France, Britain and Germany — who deem it unrealistic and want to resume June's talks where they left off without new demands.

One Western diplomat said if Tehran was genuinely continuing to demand a guarantee and full lifting of sanctions then it meant Iran was not serious about talks.

Khatibzadeh said Ali Bagheri Kani, who is Iran's top nuclear negotiator, will travel this week, as deputy foreign minister for political affairs, to the capitals of three European parties to the pact.

A French diplomatic source said Bagheri Kani would meet France's lead negotiator in Paris on Tuesday. A British Foreign Office spokesperson said Bagheri Kani would be in London on Thursday.

"We will urge Iran to take the opportunity to swiftly conclude the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action deal on the table," the spokesperson said, adding that London would also press for the immediate release of detained British nationals.

Some players may not be 'comfortable' touring Pakistan: Tim Paine

Some players may not be 'comfortable' touring Pakistan: Tim Paine
Australian test captain Tim Paine said there will be certain players in the camp who will not be "comfortable" touring Pakistan next year.

A day earlier, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and Cricket Australia both confirmed that Australia will play three Test matches, three ODIs and one T20I in Pakistan next year.

The tour, however, will go ahead only after security clearance is issued.

Australian captain Tim Paine spoke to Australian radio station SEN and admitted that some players may not be 100% on board with touring Pakistan.

"There’ll be some guys who will be happy to take the experts’ advice and others will want to know a bit more,” Paine said. "If we’re totally honest, there might be some people who aren’t comfortable going regardless.

Paine admitted that there will be "issues that will, I’m sure, pop up."

He said the team will discuss the subject and hopefully, get the right answers. "Hopefully, we will get the best team we can," he said, adding that the decision to either go or not go to Pakistan rests with an individual, instead of the team.

Pain delved into his experience of touring Pakistan in 2017, when he was part of the World XI team that played in an exhibition series in Pakistan.

The Australian captain admitted he was reassured but also "unnerved" at the same time, with Pakistan's security officials taking extraordinary measures, such as having choppers fly above the team's bus.

"The security that we had on that tour was unlike anything that I’ve ever seen in my life,” Paine said. "We had helicopters overhead, roads shut down five kilometres around us, checkpoints like every kilometre into the ground, it was extraordinary.

"The fact you’re seeing it and thinking to yourself it may be necessary can be a bit unnerving, but at the same time to see the planning and execution of it, with literally a couple of choppers above your bus 20-30 metres above your head was comforting but also unnerving at the same time," he added.
