T20 World Cup: Green Shirts to face Australia in Semi Final on Sunday

pak team
Pakistan defeated Scotland by 72 runs on Sunday, continuing their undefeated streak in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup.

There are two groups in the Super 12 stage — Group 1 and 2. The team which ended at the top of each group will play the team which ranked second on the other group's points table.

Pakistan ended their group run on the top of the points table, while New Zealand were second.

As a result, Pakistan will now face Australia in the semi-finals in Dubai, while New Zealand will go toe-to-toe against England in Abu Dhabi.

Speaking after Pakistan's victory against Scotland, Babar said the driving force behind the team's undefeated streak was their unity and consistency.

"Our plan to bat first bore fruits [...] Mohammad Hafeez also batted well today," he said.

The skipper said the semi-final would take place in Dubai and over there, Pakistan has a lot of fans. "Due to the fans support, we will step in the ground with confidence."

T20 World Cup: Pakistan defeat Scotland by 72 runs

pak vs sco
Pakistan defeated Scotland by 72 runs on the back of magnificent half-centuries from Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik on Sunday to set up a Twenty20 World Cup semi-final clash against Australia.

Skipper Babar scored a polished 47-ball-66 for his 24th fifty in Twenty20 internationals, and his fourth in five matches, while Malik smashed an 18-ball 54 not out as Pakistan posted 189-4 in their 20 overs.

Scotland were never in the hunt as they managed 117-6 with Richie Berrington fighting a lone hand during his 37-ball 54 not out with four boundaries and a six.

The victory gave Pakistan five wins in as many games, topping Group 2 with ten points.

They now face Australia in the second semi-final in Dubai on Thursday.

England will face New Zealand in the first semi-final in Abu Dhabi on Wednesday.

"Shoaib, the way he finished, the way he showed his experience, that's what he's known for," said Babar of his 39-year-old teammate.

"We'll carry good confidence into the semi-finals and try to play in the same way. Definitely, Dubai is one of the best stadiums. As a player, if you play in front of a whole crowd that cheers for you, your confidence increases."

Scotland lost skipper Kyle Coetzer (nine), Matthew Cross (five) and George Munsey (17) before they crossed fifty and it was left to Berrington and Micheal Leask (14) to add 46 for the fifth wicket.

But the asking rate continued to mount as spinner Shadab Khan (2-14) kept up the pressure. Shaheen Shah Afridi, Haris Rauf and Hasan Ali claimed a wicket each.

"I thought we bowled really well today, especially in the powerplay," said Coetzer whose team lost all five Super 12 games but defeated Bangladesh in the qualifying round.

ECP's inquiry report on Daska by-polls, PM Khan should resign: Shahbaz Sharif said

Shahbaz Sharif
PML-N President and Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly Shahbaz Sharif commented on the recently released report of the Election Commission of Pakistan regarding rigging in the Daska by-polls and said that if Imran Niazi has the slightest respect for the law, democracy, and political ethics, then he should resign.

In an official statement, Shahbaz said that after being exposed for stealing votes in the Daska by-polls, Imran Niazi needed the "black electoral reforms, the National Accountability Bureau Amendment Ordinance, and electronic voting machines (EVMs)" to cover his government's wrongdoing.

"Since the ECP has published the inquiry report of the Daska by-elections, action should be taken [against the government] now," he said, adding that the PTI is making attempts to "rob and snatch people's right to vote".

It should be noted that two days ago, the ECP had released an inquiry report about the Daska by-polls being rigged and had revealed that the election officials and other government functionaries "did not play their designated role in a requisite manner [and] they were found puppets in the hands of their unlawful masters".

The PML-N president said that those who believe in the Constitution, democracy, and the interest of the nation will join hands with Opposition parties to thwart the present government's "dark plan to enslave people."

"This horrible conspiracy will be buried with this controversial government," he maintained, per the statement.

Shahbaz further said that being a powerful person, Prime Minister Imran Khan should let the law take its course since his government's misconduct has been exposed.

"A prime minister needs bravery and determination, just like Nawaz Sharif, to face the law and appear before the court," he said.

PMLN demands judiciary a suo motu notice on Daska by-election

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi
The PML-N has demanded that the judiciary take a suo motu notice on the Daska by-election for "violation of the Constitution" after a report by the Election Commission of Pakistan determined that the polls were not held in a free and transparent manner.

Addressing the media, former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said that Article 240 of the Constitution says all institutions should help the Election Commission of Pakistan in holding transparent elections.

He said that the ECP's report contains the names of all those involved in the "rigging" of the polls held on February 19, and that a meeting held in this regard was attended by "many PTI members".

Abbasi called for exemplary punishment of all "conspirators" and termed the report a "test" for the superior judiciary.

Presiding officers 'instructed not to interfere'
Noting the report's contents, he said that Deputy Colleges Sialkot summoned all presiding officers to Daska College and gave them instructions.

"Presiding officers were directed to keep voting slow in Daska city," Abbasi said, adding that they were "told not to interfere in whatever the police and administration do".

"Polling stations were ordered to close at 4:30pm and all Form 45," he said, in further reference to the report.

Abbasi, quoting the report, said that the Deputy Education (Female) also invited women presiding officers to her home and that Assistant Commissioner Daska and DSP Sambrial were also present at the DEO's house.

"Women presiding officers were asked to help the government and not interfere in rigging," he said.

The PML-N leader went on to say that 20 presiding officers were transferred via private vehicles under the "scheme" and were "kept at two different police stations" as well as an unknown location.

Further referencing the report, he said that one woman presiding officer was "maltreated".

"The report says the RO did not leave his office," Abbasi said, adding that the returning officers "did not know of the missing presiding officers' whereabouts till seven hours later".

Abbasi remarked that the report states that the police officers, instead of fulfulling their mandated duty to protect the electoral staff, were instead found to have "kidnapped" them.

"Only time will tell who was afraid and why," the former premier said.

He asked how the election was of any benefit to the police officers and said that the chief minister and prime minister "will have to answer such questions".

"This matter goes all the way to the chief minister and Prime Minister Imran Khan," Abbasi alleged.

He said this is but a "small example of an election" and hoped that the ECP makes the report public.
