ECP wants PTI's Azam Swati to appear in person

ECP wants PTI's Azam Swati to appear in person
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has issued a show-cause notice to Federal Minister for Railways and PTI leader Azam Swati. The ECP has asked Swati to appear before the commission in person on October 26 and respond to the show-cause notice.

A bench, comprising ECP members Nisar Ahmed Durrani and Shah Mohammad Jatoi heard the allegations against Swati on Thursday in Islamabad.
Swati's lawyer was replaced by a junior lawyer in the commission and he shared that lawyer Chaudhry Faisal was busy in the Supreme Court.

Jatoi asked the junior lawyer why he had not taken a briefing over the case from the senior lawyer, while Durrani pointed out that only giving power of attorney won't solve the problem.

Swati had lashed out at the ECP, accusing it of taking money from companies that make electronic voting machines during a meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs on September 10 and another held the night prior at President House.

Swati had alleged that the ECP is destroying the country's democracy and that it is involved in rigging.

Members of the ECP had walked out of the meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs on Azam Swati's allegations.

Earlier, three weeks ago, the ECP had given federal ministers Fawad Chaudhry and Swati more time to submit their replies regarding allegations they levelled against the commission and the chief election commissioner (CEC).

Sources privy to the matter said that the ECP had sought replies from the federal ministers in three weeks.

They said that action against the ministers will be taken under the Election Act in case of non-compliance with the orders and their behaviour may be considered contempt if proof backing the allegations is not provided.

The ECP had served notices to Chaudhry and Swati on September 16, seeking explanations within a week from both the ministers for accusations against CEC Sikander Sultan Raja and the commission.

However, both the ministers, on September 23, had requested an extension from the ECP to submit their replies.

Chaudhry had said that the ECP has "become the headquarters for Opposition parties" and the chief election commissioner is "acting as their mouthpiece", during a press conference on the same day Swati made his allegations.

Javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem to get training in South Africa

Javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem to get training in South Africa
To provide Arshad Nadeem with the best training ahead of next year’s important events, sports authorities have decided to send the country’s premier javelin thrower to South Africa.

According to a report , Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) confirmed Wednesday that they have been given a green signal by South Africa to send Arshad Nadeem for training.

“Yes, they have told us to send Arshad for training,” AFP chief Major General (retd) Mohammad Akram Sahi told The News.

“We have written to the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and hope the government will fully back the cause,” Sahi said.

“It’s a national cause and we will do everything to implement the plans. We are sending another javelin thrower Mohammad Yasir with Arshad and I hope the things will be done as soon as possible,” said Sahi, also a former international athlete.

Meanwhile, Arshad has decided to resume his training on his own in the next few days. “I have decided to resume my training here at Mian Channu in the next four days,” Arshad told the publication.

“I am shifting to my new house in Mian Channu in three to four days. I plan to train there on a solid basis. There is a cricket ground there where I can manage training,” said Arshad, also the 2018 Asian Games bronze medallist.

Arshad lived in a village in Mian Channu but after finishing fifth in the Tokyo Olympics he got enough money to purchase a house in the city.

He is also being backed by some people in terms of training equipment. “The Army Chief Qamar Javed Bajwa has gifted me a set for weight training while Maulana Tariq Jamil Sahib has gifted me a running machine. I am going to establish a small gym in my new house which will benefit me during my training,” Arshad said.

Before the Olympics, Arshad kept cemented blocks at his home which he used for weight training.

Arshad has some tough events ahead next year which include the World Championship to be held in July in the US, the Commonwealth Games to be hosted by England in Birmingham from July 28 to August 8 and the Asian Games which will be held in China in September.

Although Arshad has rested for around two-and-a-half months, he says he has not gained weight and is fit. “I am fit, no issue,” Arshad said.

China will welcome US lifting of tariffs on some Chinese goods: commerce ministry

China will welcome US lifting of tariffs on some Chinese goods: commerce ministry
China would welcome a move by the United States to lift tariffs on some Chinese goods, Shu Jueting, spokesperson for the Commerce Ministry, said on Thursday.

China and the United States should work together to create conditions for implementation of phase one trade deal, Shu reiterated at a news conference.
Earlier, on Wednesday, the United States said that China’s industrial policies "skew the playing field" against imported goods and services, as well as their foreign providers, and that Washington would pursue all means to secure reforms.
China's other major trading partners - including Australia, Britain, Canada and the European Union - also called for the world's second-largest economy to carry out further liberalisation and open its vast markets, trade sources said.

In addition to industrial subsidies, other "unfair trade practices" include preferential treatment for state enterprises, data restrictions, inadequate enforcement of intellectual property rights and cyber theft, U.S. charge d'affaires David Bisbee told the World Trade Organization.

He was addressing a closed-door WTO meeting, which continues on Friday, to conduct the watchdog's first review of China's trade policy since 2018.

Both the United States and Canada denounced alleged "economic coercion" by China against other WTO member states who speak out against its practices.

"We also cannot ignore reports of China’s use of forced labour in several sectors," Bisbee said, in an apparent reference to activists' allegations regarding ethnic Uyghurs held in detention in Xinjiang, a charge that Beijing denies.

The United States would pursue all available tools to try to persuade China to make needed changes, he added in remarks made available by the U.S. trade delegation in Geneva.

China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, who led its 20-member delegation, told the meeting: "Since the last review, China has stayed committed to deepening reform, expanding, opening up and growing its open economy at a higher level."

"China has been reinforcing intellectual property protection by legislative, administrative and judicial means, and fulfilling its obligations on transparency," he said.

Other WTO members urged China to press on with reforms to achieve fairer market competition and transparency, trade sources said.

The EU said that the degree to which China has reformed and opened is not commensurate with its weight in the global economy, or comparable to the access its goods have to the markets of other WTO members. It urged China to adopt further market reforms and play a role in the WTO equal to its economic weight.

Australia called on China to give up its access to special and differential treatment, granted when it joined the WTO 20 years ago, and said that China's practices increasingly have been inconsistent with its WTO commitments, according to trade sources.

On the sensitive issue, China's Wang said: "In keeping with the principle of balanced rights and obligations, China is willing to approach special and differential treatment with pragmatism and make more contribution within the WTO that is commensurate with its capacity."
