Devaluation of currency helped overseas Pakistanis: Reza Baqir

Devaluation of currency helped overseas Pakistanis: Reza Baqir
Some people suffer losses due to a rise in the exchange rate, but some also benefit from it, says State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Reza Baqir.

The SBP governor was speaking on Wednesday at a press conference, where he said that the devaluation of currency helped overseas Pakistanis and their families as they were now sending back home more money to their loved ones compared to before. "The money sent by our brothers and sisters, the overseas Pakistanis who send their hard-earned money in the form of remittances, is increasing in quantity due to the exchange rate [fluctuation]," he said. "Some people suffer losses when the exchange rate goes up, but others also benefit from it," he explained.

He said this "additional money" is being sent to Pakistanis in the country, reiterating that every economic policy of the government proves to be beneficial for some, while not for others. "So when we talk of some people being at a disadvantage [due to economic policies], we should not forget the ones who benefit from them as well," he noted.

Speaking about Pakistan's probable deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF), Baqir said the government will not sign any agreement with the international money lender that will harm Pakistan's economy. Insisting that the deal will be a transparent one, he said authorities will reveal details of the IMF detail for everyone to inspect.

He spoke about Pakistan's compliance with the Financial Action Task Force's (FATF) targets, adding that Pakistan had fulfilled 26 out of its 27 conditions. "Pakistan will soon come out of the grey list," he said.

He said Pakistan had almost recorded a GDP growth rate of 4%, adding that a 4% real GDP growth rate meant the earnings of people also increased by four-fold.

Former US President Trump to launch new social media platform TRUTH Social

Former US President Trump to launch new social media platform TRUTH Social
Former US President Donald Trump has announced plans to launch a new social media network, called TRUTH Social. He said the platform would "stand up to the tyranny of big tech", accusing them of silencing opposing voices in the US.

Trump Media & Technology Group (TMTG), which he chairs, also intends to launch a subscription video-on-demand service.

Mr Trump was banned or suspended from social networks like Twitter and Facebook after crowds of his supporters stormed the US Capitol in January.

He and his advisers have since hinted that they were planning to create a rival social media site.
Earlier this year, he launched From the Desk of Donald J Trump, which was often referred to as a blog.

The website was permanently shut down a month later. His senior aide Jason Miller said it was "just auxiliary to the broader efforts we have and are working on".

An early version of his latest venture, TRUTH Social, will be open to invited guests next month, and will have a "nationwide rollout" within the first three months of 2022, according to a statement by TMTG.

"We live in a world where the Taliban has a huge presence on Twitter, yet your favourite American President has been silenced," wrote Mr Trump.
"Everyone asks me why doesn't someone stand up to Big Tech? Well, we will be soon!" he added.

TMTG said its video-on-demand service would "feature 'non-woke' entertainment programming, news, podcasts, and more".

The firm said it intends to merge with a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC) listed on the Nasdaq.

This will allow TMTG to become a publicly listed firm without going through the traditional processes of an initial public offering.

The SPAC, named Digital World Acquisition Corp, is headed by Patrick Orlando, who has raised several SPACs in the past but has yet to use one to take a company public, according to news outlet Axios.

Mr Trump's announcement comes months after his former aide Jason Miller launched another social media company called GETTR.

Noor Mukhdoom Murder Case: Zahir earns court ire after attempting to interrupt proceedings

Noor Mukhdoo Murder Case:
A district and sessions court in Islamabad scolded Zahir Jaffer, the main accused in the Noor Mukadam murder case, for violating the court’s decorum.

Zahir earned the court's ire after he attempted to speak again and again to interrupt the proceedings. The district and sessions judge ordered the police to silence the accused and the police complied with the orders.

Earlier, the police produced Zahir Jaffer, his father Zakir Jaffer and mother Asmat Adamjee before the court.

The counsel of the accused apprised the court that his clients have challenged their indictment in the case at the Islamabad High Court. Notices have been issued in this regard, the lawyer added.

Meanwhile, the public prosecutor told the court that the witnesses have been called for fingerprinting.

The court adjourned the hearing till 1:30pm today and sent the accused to 'bakhshi khana’.

On October 18, the Supreme Court accepted the bail plea of Zahir's mother, Asmat Adamjee, who is one of the other accused individuals in the murder case.

However, the apex court rejected the bail plea of Zahir's father, Zakir Jaffer.

The Supreme Court ordered Adamjee to submit bail bonds worth Rs1 million.

The apex court said the prime suspect's mother was not at the scene of the crime when it took place.

A three-member bench of the apex court, comprising Justice Umar Ata Bandial, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, and Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin heard the bail pleas of Zahir’s parents.
