Negotiations with IMF moving forward positively: Reza Baqir

Negotiations with IMF moving forward positively: Reza Baqir
Pakistan's negotiations with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) are moving forward in a positive manner, says State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Reza Baqir. He was speaking on Tuesday to overseas Pakistanis at an event in London, where he has been for the last four days.

Baqir's statement came shortly after IMF Director of the Middle East and Central Asia Department Jihad Azour had said that talks between Pakistan and the IMF on the $6 billion Extended Fund Facility (EFF) are progressing in a "very good" manner.
Unveiling the 'Regional Economic Outlook: The Middle East and Central Asia – October 2021', Azour had said: "The discussion around the sixth review is currently progressing around various pillars."

The IMF mission and Pakistani authorities are discussing the measures that the government of Pakistan is currently contemplating.

"The progress has gone in a very good step and the mission with the authorities is going through various details [sic]," he had added.

Baqir, meanwhile, told the overseas Pakistanis that he was bringing Prime Minister Imran Khan's message to them.

He said inflation is currently a reality all over the world and isn't just happening in Pakistan. He gave the example of the United States, saying that the country had not experienced the kind of inflation it is currently experiencing in the last 30 years.

The SBP governor said that so far 260,000 Roshan Digital accounts had been opened, through which Pakistan has received Rs2.6 billion.

Justifying the high rates of inflation, he said it is because of the rise in oil prices. "The exchange rate has been left to market forces since June 2019," he said, adding that the pressure on payments is due to the fact that our economy is improving.

'Reports related to inconclusive talks with IMF baseless'
Earlier, reacting to news reports regarding Pakistan's policy-level talks with the IMF for the resumption of the $6 billion EFF, Ministry of Finance Spokesperson Muzammil Aslam negated all reports, terming them as "baseless."

"Shaukat Tarin, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance, has returned to Washington DC to join ongoing discussions with IMF," Aslam wrote on Twitter.
On Sunday, Tarin had dismissed reports that the talks between Pakistan and IMF have failed, asserting that they were headed in a positive direction.

"The talks are continuing," Tarin had told reporters, after addressing members of the Pakistani community at the consulate-general in New York Sunday night, during which he had said the government was working hard to achieve inclusive and sustainable economic growth that benefits all segments of society, especially the poor.

He went to New York on Friday from Washington, where, besides the loan talks, he attended the annual meetings of the IMF and World Bank. "I don't know what's the basis on which an impression has been given by some that the talks have failed — they are totally wrong," he had said.

At this stage, Tarin had said that the final details were being worked out and the negotiations would conclude successfully.

Tarin had informed the media that Finance Secretary Yusuf Khan was still in Washington pursuing the talks with IMF officials and that he was in contact with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) chairperson as well as with him for any advice.

"There was an atmosphere of positivity and the next few days will show a productive outcome from the talks," he had said.

In this regard, Tarin had said his meeting with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and other Fund officials were also very "useful and positive."

"The nation shouldn't be disillusioned by some unfounded negative reports," Tarin had added.

Asked whether the IMF was demanding that Pakistan do more, Tarin had said that every banker will ask for more when someone applies for a loan. Pakistan, he said, had its red lines to protect its interests, although it has been made clear that the government will pursue the reform process for sustainable growth.

Biden nominates Donald Blome as new envoy to Pakistan

Biden nominates Donald Blome as new envoy to Pakistan
US President Joe Biden has nominated Donald Blome, currently ambassador to Tunisia, as his top diplomat in Pakistan as Washington works to manage the situation in neighboring Afghanistan following the withdrawal of American troops.

Blome is a career Foreign Service diplomat with long experience in the region who once worked in the Kabul embassy, shuttered earlier this year during the US military withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Pakistan is playing a major role in diplomacy with its Taliban-ruled neighbor.

International agencies have warned that Afghanistan is on the verge of humanitarian collapse without access to aid or foreign reserves, which remain frozen in the United States.
Pakistan’s relationship with neighboring China has also been of interest to the Biden administration, which regards Beijing as its chief international rival.

Tunisia, where Blome has worked as ambassador since 2019, is an important diplomatic outpost for the United States in North Africa, representing interests beyond the country s borders, including in neighboring Libya.

The ambassadorial position requires Senate confirmation.

T20 World Cup: Bangladesh beat Oman by 26 runs
World number six Bangladesh thrashed co-host Oman by 26 runs on Tuesday to stay alive in the T20 World Cup.Bangladesh came into the game in Muscat needing a win to stay in the hunt for the Super 12 stage. They elected to bat and were bowled out for 153.

Left-hand opener Mohammad Naim, who smashed 64 off 50 balls, and Shakib set up the victory for Bangladesh with a key second-wicket stand of 80 after the Tigers lost two early wickets. Star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan took three wickets and scored 42.
Mustafizur Rahman, who returned figures of 4-36, and Shakib then shared seven wickets to keep Oman to 127-9 as Bangladesh bounced back from their opening Group B loss to Scotland.

"We´ll take this win, but I think there are a lot of areas we need to improve," skipper Mahmudullah Riyad said after the win.

"Shakib and Naim batted brilliantly, they had a good partnerships and that took us to 150-plus. But we should have done better with the new ball. Bowled a lot of wides."

Oman opener Jatinder Singh smashed 40 off 33 balls before falling to Shakib´s left-arm spin and it seemed the wicket deflated Oman.

Shakib struck with successive balls but Mohammad Nadeem prevented the hat-trick and went on to make 14 not out.

Mahedi Hasan was impressive impressively economical with figures of 1-14 from his four overs of finger spin.

Oman fast bowlers Bilal Khan and Fayyaz Butt took three wickets each to peg back Bangladesh after the big partnership between Naim and Shakib.

Naim, who replaced Soumya Sarkar for the key match, survived two dropped catches on 18 and 26 to go on and raise his third T20 half-century.

The Oman bowlers kept picking up wickets and could have limited Bangladesh to a far lower score with better catching as Kashyap Prajapati dropped two chances and Jatinder spilled another.

"It is not acceptable the way we are fielding right now," skipper Zeeshan Maqsood told reporters.

He added, "Oman is confident of a good show in the last game and a win will help us boost our cricket as we will meet the top nations and learn from them."

Earlier in the day, Scotland beat Papua New Guinea in the first match to record their second successive win and are now on the verge of making the next stage.

Oman, who hammered Papua New Guinea in the tournament opener on Sunday, have two points with one win and stay second in the group above Bangladesh.
