Merkel meets Erdogan, sees continuity in Germany-Turkey ties

Merkel meets Erdogan
Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday vowed continuity in Germany’s relations with Turkey that included both cooperation and criticism of Ankara as she paid her final visit to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Merkel and Erdogan developed complex but close relations over the German chancellor’s 16-year term that navigated the perils of Turkey’s tumultuous ties with the West.

Their personal bond was instrumental in helping Europe manage a refugee crisis in 2016 and calm simmering tensions in the east Mediterranean last year.

Merkel also helped iron out some of the difficulties that have crept into Erdogan’s relations with Washington and French President Emmanuel Macron.

The two leaders had lunch and private talks in a presidential villa overlooking the Bosphorus on the latest leg of Merkel’s parting foreign tour.

“I have always said that our collaboration was very good in the years that I worked with Mr Erdogan,” Merkel told reporters after the talks.

“I criticised Turkey on the issue of human rights and individual freedoms. We looked for solutions. We could have differences, but we depended on each other,” she said.

The 67-year-old German leader said her “advice” to Turkey today was to expect “the same thing for the coming government in Germany”.

“The relationship between Turkey and Germany, with its negative and positive sides, will go on. It will be recognised by the next government,” she said.

Women must be given their constitutional rights, powers: CJP

Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Gulzar Ahmed
Highlighting the constitutional rights of women in the country, Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Gulzar Ahmed has said it is imperative they enjoy all the rights and powers guaranteed by the law.

Addressing an inaugural ceremony of the Pink Ribbon Hospital, the first ever fully dedicated breast cancer facility in Pakistan, Justice Gulzar said that the constitution has guaranteed many rights and powers for women, which should be provided to them.

“Not only should women be given representation everywhere but all their rights should also be protected,” he added.

The CJP said that women were not only a valuable part of the country, but the lifeline of society. "The well-being of women leads to the well-being of the whole nation,” he said.

The CJP said it was unfortunate that a country, with a high proportion of women population, had no specialized breast cancer institute. He added that as many as 40,000 deaths a year due to breast cancer can not be overlooked.

He urged the need to comprehend the gravity of the situation and added that breast cancer hospitals and clinics should be established throughout the country to detect and treat the disease at an early stage. He assured the hospital administration of unflinching support by the Supreme Court.

Earlier, the CEO of Pink Ribbon Pakistan, Dr Omer Aftab, said that his organisation is working dedicatedly on the issue of breast cancer in the country for the last 17 years. "The journey of the organisation has been full of challenges as there was a time when even mentioning the word “Breast Cancer” was a taboo, which has now become a leading topic in the national health agenda,” the CEO said.

He asserted that the organisation had educated 1.3 million young girls on the need of breast self-examination, and 18 million women on early detection techniques since the inception of the organisation back in 2004.

T20 World Cup: Babar Azam plans to consult Shoaib Malik before every match

Babar Azam and Shoaib Malik
Pakistan cricket team captain Babar Azam says he plans to to consult Shoaib Malik for the T20 World Cup matches.

“He is experienced and has all the knowledge of international cricket, especially T20 cricket,” Azam said at a press conference.

“Shoaib Malik’s inclusion in the team surely is a big boost for the team. His experience will help us a great deal,” he said, adding that Malik and other senior players will be consulted before finalising a strategy for each match.

Azam said Mohammad Rizwan had emerged as a true batsman. “He has become a linchpin in Pakistan batting lineup. I am looking forward to establishing a partnership with him in an effort to give a solid foundation to the team’s total,” he added.

Babar Azam will be playing his first-ever T20 World Cup.

He believes he is lucky to be leading the Pakistan team. “I am leading the team in my first ever T20 World Cup, which is a big responsibility for me. I am in form and have been scoring runs,” he said.

He wants Pakistan to repeat its 2009 performance when the team won the title in England. “We want to repeat that performance. Winning [the] T20 World Cup in 2009 was big news for Pakistan,” he added.

On changes made ahead of the team’s departure to Dubai, Babar said some of the players were not in their best form. “In the absence of the scheduled series against New Zealand and England, we organised National T20 to see the selected players’ form. Some of them were in the best form. That is why we made some changes in the team,” Babar said.

Batting consultant Mathew Hayden has reached Dubai to join the Pakistan cricket team ahead of the T20 World Cup starting from Sunday (today) with the qualifying round.

Pakistan are scheduled to play their opening round match against India on October 24 at Dubai Sports Stadium. Before that, the team will play practice matches against West Indies on October 18 and against South Africa on October 20.
