UN chief slams ‘horrific’ attack at Kunduz mosque

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has condemned “in the strongest terms” the “horrific” attack against a Shia mosque in the northern Afghan city of Kunduz, noting that it represents the third assault on a religious institution, in less than a week.

“Attacks that deliberately target civilians exercising the right to freely practice their religion are violations of fundamental human rights and international humanitarian law”, the UN chief said in a statement released by his Spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric.

“The perpetrators must be brought to justice,” the statement said.

According to news reports, at least 100 people have been martyred or injured after a suicide bomber targeted the mosque during Friday prayers.

The Secretary-General expresses his condolences to the bereaved families and wishes those injured, a speedy recovery.

The attack, according to the reports, was claimed by the Daesh Khorasan Province, which has previously targeted the Shia Muslim community in Afghanistan, and is opposed to the Taliban, who seized power in mid-August.

Militants from IKSP, also carried out the deadly attack at Kabul airport last month, which killed 13 United States military personnel, and 169 Afghan civilians.

The UN Mission in Afghanistan, UNAMA, tweeted that it was deeply concerned over the recent spate of attacks, which apart from the bombing of Sayyidabad mosque on Friday, included an incident claimed by IKSP on Sunday near a mosque in Kabul, and Wednesday’s attack on a school in Khost, which is so far, unclaimed.

“Today’s incident is part of a disturbing pattern of violence”, UNAMA said.

In a tweet, the Geneva-based UN human rights office, OHCHR, said that the bombings and targeting of houses of worship, “highlights the vulnerability of ordinary Afghans, especially religious minorities. Our hearts are with the victims and we hope for justice.”

Nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan passes away at 85 in Islamabad

 Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan
Pakistan's renowned nuclear scientist Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan passed away Sunday after his health deteriorated.

Dr AQ Khan is considered the father of Pakistan's nuclear programme and is revered at home as a hero for building the Muslim world's first atomic bomb.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan's health started deteriorating Saturday night, after which he was brought to the KRL hospital Sunday morning in an ambulance, at 6:00am.

Sources said the nuclear scientist experienced discomfort in breathing after which he was brought to the hospital. However, his health took a turn for the worse when his lungs started bleeding.

Doctors tried their best to save the renowned scientist's life, however, were unable to do so and he passed away at 7:04am. Doctors have said Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan passed away as his lungs collapsed.

The hospital administration is trying to make arrangements to shift Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan's body to his E-7 residence. His funeral prayers will be offered at the Faisal Mosque in Islamabad at 3:30pm, said his family.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed showered praise on the scientist, adding that all necessary arrangements were taken to save Dr Qadeer's life.

When asked about the nuclear scientist's funeral, Rasheed declined to comment, saying that he would speak on the matter later.

The interior minister said Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan had helped him a lot in educational activities, adding that he had remained a visionary leader in times when Pakistan was going through a sensitive time.

"He is indeed the Mohsin-e-Pakistan," said Rasheed.

Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan became a national hero overnight, not only in Pakistan but in the Islamic world as well, when in May 1998 Pakistan gave a befitting response to India by conducting its nuclear tests.

Following the tests, Pakistan became the sole nuclear power in the Muslim world and the seventh country to possess nuclear weapons. Pakistan's nuclear weapons have kept Indian aggression in check.

Reactions pour in over Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan's demise

Rasheed took to Twitter to post an old picture taken with the atomic scientist, praying for his forgiveness.

"May Allah provide patience to Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan's relatives and those who are mourning his passing," he added.

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Asad Umar prayed for Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan's soul after hearing about his demise.

He paid tribute to the nuclear scientist by saying that he played a key role in making Pakistan invincible.

Defence Minister Parvez Khattak said he was deeply grieved over the news of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan passing, adding that "Pakistan will forever honour his services to the nation".

Education Minister Shafqat Mehmood heaped praise on the nuclear scientist, referring to him as the "pioneer of Pakistan's nuclear program".

"Sad to learn of Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan’s death. He was a pioneer of Pakistan’s nuclear program and contributed immensely to our security. May his soul RIP," he tweeted.

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain
Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain said on Saturday that PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif should not vent his anger on the injustices done to him within his party by making unconstitutional and undemocratic demands.

In a statement in response to the press conference of Shehbaz Sharif and JUI-F Amir Maulana Fazlur Rehman, he said that the former must first decide whether he was “inside” the party or the elder brother had thrown him “out” with the help of his close aides.

He said those who excelled in the art of corruption in Pakistan had ruined their politics in London and they could not befool the people of Pakistan any more.

He said that Sharifs have double standards,if they were in power, they plead the government should complete the constitutional term but if the people give mandate to Imran Khan, they did not tolerate it.

“Those who have been addicted to using public resources and protocols for decades, when they are without power and authority they feel like a fish without water”, said Fawad Hussain.

He said that current inflation in the country was outcome of the billions of rupees of corruption and foreign loans taken by previous governments for personal gains.

He advised Maulana Fazlur Rehman not to play with the democratic system to satisfy his political ego.

He asked him to remember his speeches in the National Assembly in the past in which he used to say that the government should complete its term.

The minister opined that Nawaz Sharif was treating his brother and Maryam Nawaz her uncle Shehbaz Sharif the same way Zardari and Bilawal had dumped Fazlur Rehman.

He said that Maulana Fazlur Rehman and Shehbaz Sharif should join hands and make the association of victims.
