Govt to suspend mobile phone service on chehlum: Interior Minister

Govt to suspend mobile phone service on chehlum: Interior Minister
Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed said on Monday mobile phone services will be suspended on Chehlum as part of security measures to avoid any untoward incident.

Addressing a press conference, the minister said the Pakistan Army and Rangers troops will be deployed for security of Chehlum processions.
Talking about New Zealand’s cricket team abandoning its tour of Pakistan over “security threat”, he said the Pakistan Army troops were assigned to provide foolproof security to the players following a decision to this effect by the federal cabinet.
Noting that the nation was upset over the NZ team pulling out of the tour, Sheikh Rasheed asked citizens not to become dejected and reassured that one day all cricket teams will come to play in Pakistan.

About the Afghanistan situation, the minister said Pakistan helped evacuate 16,000 people, including diplomats and representatives of the IMF and the World Bank from the war-ravaged country after the Taliban takeover.

He said the country has received no Afghan refugees nor was any refugee camp set up along the Pak-Afghan border. The government desires swift return of three million refugees residing in Pakistan to their homeland after peace and stability are restored there, he added.

At least eight dead in Russian campus shooting

At least eight dead in Russian campus shooting
A student opened fire at a university campus in central Russia on Monday killing at least eight people, investigators said, in the second mass shooting at an education facility this year.

Russia's Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said several people were also injured in the attack at Perm State University and that the suspect had been wounded while being detained.

Investigators previously said that five people were killed and another six wounded.

Russia has relatively few school shootings due to normally tight security in education facilities and because of the difficulty of buying firearms legally, although it is possible to register hunting rifles.

Videos circulating on social media showed students throwing belongings from windows from buildings on campus before jumping to flee the shooter.

State media played amateur footage reportedly taken during the attack showing an individual dressed in black tactical clothing, including a helmet, carrying a weapon and walking through the campus.

The last such deadly attack took place in May 2021, when a 19-year-old gunman opened fire in his old school in the central Russian city of Kazan, killing nine people.

Investigators said that man suffered from a brain disorder. But he was deemed fit to receive a licence for the semi-automatic shotgun he used in the attack.

On the day of that attack — one of the worst in recent Russian history — President Vladimir Putin called for a review of gun control laws.

In November 2019, a 19-year-old student in the far eastern town of Blagoveshchensk opened fire at his college, killing one classmate and injuring three other people before shooting and killing himself.

In October 2018, another teenage gunman killed 20 people at a Kerch technical college in Crimea, the peninsula Russia annexed from Ukraine in 2014.

He was shown in camera footage wearing a similar T-shirt to Eric Harris, one of the killers in the 1999 Columbine High School shooting in the US, which left 13 people dead.

The Crimea shooter was able to legally obtain a gun licence after undergoing marksmanship training and being examined by a psychiatrist.

The country's Federal Security Service (FSB) says it has prevented dozens of armed attacks on schools in recent years.

In February 2020, the FSB said it had detained two teenagers on suspicion of plotting an attack on a school in the city of Saratov with weapons and homemade explosives.

Authorities have claimed that young Russians are being increasingly exposed to negative influences online, especially from the West.

Abrupt end to series a 'real shame', says Kane Williamson

Abrupt end to series a 'real shame', says Kane Williamson
The effect of New Zealand's decision to cancel the Pakistan tour will not last long, said New Zealand captain Kane Williamson terming the sudden call a "real shame".

In an interview to Sportstar, the skipper said: “I don't know much about the details. Everything happened suddenly.”

"I don't know the details [of pullout]. It was a sudden call, but obviously, a real shame," he said, adding that cricket in Pakistan is an amazing thing and supported by the masses.

The star cricketer who is currently in Dubai for a cricket league, assured fans that he will try to find more details of the situation.

Williamson said: “Cricket is very popular in Pakistan and there is so much passion there and I think the guys will be gutted to not have started and played the whole series."

Shedding light on the much-awaited series, the 31-year-old right-handed batsman said: "I was very happy that the series is being played in Pakistan. I know our team was looking forward to the series.”

He, however, added that the decision to pull out was not players' alone and rested with the government.

"You want to be playing the game in all countries. It is an international game and there is so much passion for it around the world, particularly in Pakistan," Williamson was quoted as saying by the Sportstar.

The cricketer maintained that players' safety is paramount and when "you hear messages going through from the government, it is certainly above the players' heads."
“The players were ready to go to the ground, however, things changed all of a sudden,” Williamson reiterated.

“It will not have lasting effects. Soon there will be cricket in Pakistan,” the Kiwi skipper said.

On Friday, moments before the ODI series opener at the Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, the New Zealand Cricket (NZC) board backed out of the much-awaited tour, citing a security alert from their government. The Pakistani authorities assured the team of complete security, but they insisted on calling off the series.
