Taliban make themselves at home in Abdul Rashid Dostum’s Kabul mansion

Abdul Rashid Dostum’s Kabul mansion
Taliban have taken over the glitzy Kabul mansion of one of their fiercest enemies — the warlord and fugitive ex-vice president Abdul Rashid Dostum.

Now in the hands of rank and file Taliban fighters, the opulent villa has given the austere group a peek into the lives of Afghanistan’s former rulers, and they say the luxury is the proceeds of years of endemic corruption.

Along an endless corridor with a thick apple-green carpet, a young fighter sleeps slumped on a sofa, his Kalashnikov rifle resting against him, as exotic fish glide above him in one of seven giant tanks.

The fighter is part of the personal security detail of Qari Salahuddin Ayoubi — one of the new regime’s most powerful commanders — who installed his company of 150 men in the mansion on August 15, the day Kabul fell.

The luxury this news agency saw on a tour of the mansion would be unimaginable for most ordinary Afghans.

Huge glass chandeliers hang in cavernous halls, large soft sofas furnish a maze of lounges and an indoor swimming pool is finished with intricate turquoise tiles.

It even boasts a sauna, a Turkish steam bath and a fully equipped gym.

It is an out of this world experience for the new occupants, who for years sacrificed creature comforts for rebellion — living on their wits in the plains, valleys and mountains of rural Afghanistan.

But the new head of the household — now the military commander of four provinces — makes it clear his men will not get used to the luxury.

“Islam never wants us to have a luxurious life,” Ayoubi said, adding luxury comes in paradise, “the life after death”.

The mansion’s owner, Dostum, is a notorious figure woven into the fabric of Afghanistan’s recent history.

A former paratrooper, communist commander, warlord and vice president, he was the very definition of a cunning political survivor who weathered over four decades of conflict in war-torn Afghanistan.

Despite a series of war crimes linked to Dostum’s forces, the former Afghan government hoped his military acumen and seething hatred of the Taliban would help them survive.

But his stronghold was overrun and the greying 67-year-old fled across the border to Uzbekistan.

Dostum is widely suspected to have hugely profited from the corruption and embezzlement that discredited the former government.

Several officials illegally took land to build luxurious mansions in one neighbourhood, earning it the nickname “Thieves’ Quarter” among locals.

In one wing of the enormous house, Taliban fighters relaxed in a massive tropical greenhouse of several hundred square metres under a huge glass roof.

That is overlooked by a mezzanine dominated by a dark wood bar — a testament to the reported decadent tastes of a general renowned for a penchant for late nights and strong liquor. The Taliban have good reason to hate Dostum.

In 2001, he was accused of killing more than 2,000 fighters — locking many in containers in the middle of the desert where they suffocated under a scorching sun.

But Commander Ayoubi rejected any desire for revenge.

“If other people who had been oppressed like us came here, you would not have seen the chairs and tables. They might have destroyed them,” he said.

But the new regime will not allow such luxury to be built with ill-gotten gains in the future, he said.

“We are on the side of the poor,” he says, as dozens of visitors wait patiently in the corridor, idly watching the indifferent fish.

Stanford professors urge US to end Trump-era programme looking for Chinese spies in academia

Stanford professors urge US to end Trump-era programme looking for Chinese spies in academia
A group of Stanford University professors has asked the Justice Department to stop looking for Chinese spies at US universities, joining an effort by human rights groups to end a Trump administration programme they said caused racial profiling and was terrorising some scientists.

The "China Initiative" launched in late 2018 aimed to prevent US technology theft by China but has since "deviated significantly from its claimed mission", according to the September 8 letter, which was signed by 177 Stanford faculty members and made public by them on Monday.

"[It] is harming the United States' research and technology competitiveness and it is fuelling biases that, in turn, raise concerns about racial profiling," the letter said.

Asked about criticism of the China Initiative, Justice Department spokesperson Wyn Hornbuckle said the government was "dedicated to countering unlawful [Chinese] government efforts to undermine America's national security and harm our economy," while acknowledging the threat of hate crimes against Asian Americans. "We take seriously concerns about discrimination," he said.

The Justice Department has published details of at least 27 cases related to the initiative, with results including some guilty pleas, some cases dropped and some ongoing.

Professors at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Harvard University were among those charged, as were five Chinese scientists who were visiting scholars last year — although those charges were dropped in July.

On Thursday, a federal judge in Tennessee acquitted a professor accused of hiding Chinese ties in his Nasa research grant application, saying prosecutors failed to provide evidence he intended to defraud the government.

"I think what the FBI's done in most cases is to scare people — investigating people and interrogating them. And it's harmful to the country," said Peter Michelson, Stanford's senior associate dean for the natural sciences, an organiser of the letter.

Another organiser, Stanford physicist Steven Kivelson said he got involved because he saw his colleagues of Chinese origin suffered from the hostile environment they were subjected to due to the initiative.

Former US Energy Secretary and Nobel prize winner Steven Chu, a professor at Stanford, said that rather than help protect US advantages in technology and understanding, the programme risked undermining America's lead in science.

"We were the brain gain for half a century," he told Reuters in an interview. "You really want to throw this away?"

Information minister invites journalists to propose changes to PMDA

Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry
Federal Minister for Information Fawad Chaudhry on Monday asked journalists to submit their proposals for changes to Pakistan Media Development Authority (PMDA) and said that the Parliament would decide on the matter.

The information minister claimed that the PMDA was meat to counter fake news and similar bills have been enacted globally.

“A UK law carries a fine of 18 million pounds over fake news,” he said adding that contrary to it, they had set very small fines under the authority to counter fake news in the country.

Fawad Chaudhry further clarified that they have only floated a proposed draft regarding PMDA which includes a framework that would only be finalized after consultations with all stakeholders.

“This is only a framework that similar laws are enacted in other countries globally,” he said adding that how could they present a draft of a bill before any consultation.

He further lamented that opposition parties had not read a single thing about the proposed authority and had just tried to join the bandwagon to malign the government.

The minister agreed that there should be consultation on media tribunal and complaint commission and journalists should come forward with better suggestions if they have.

99 percent issues of fake news pertain to social media and small channels, he said and asked as to why no questions have been raised over the murder of journalists in Sindh while the same fraternity came out on roads over the thrashing of a journalist in Islamabad.

Ramiz Raja elected as new PCB chairman

Ramiz Raja elected as new PCB chairman
Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja has been elected unopposed as the new chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) today.

The PCB’s top post fell vacant after Ehsan Mani stepped down after completing his 3-year term last month.

The election for the new chairman of PCB was held in Lahore today.

The PCB’s Election Commissioner Justice (retd) Sheikh Azmat Saeed conducted the election and presided over the special meeting to elect the 36th PCB Chairman.

Aasim Wajid Jawad, Alia Zafar, Asad Ali Khan, Arif Saeed, Javed Kurieshi, Ramiz Raja and Wasim Khan are members of the BoG and will attend the special meeting to elect the new PCB chairman.

Ramiz Raja vows to ensure Pakistan cricket grow stronger

Addressing the BoG meeting following his election, Ramiz Raja said, “I am thankful to all of you for electing me as the PCB Chairman and look forward to working with you to ensure Pakistan cricket continues to thrive and grow stronger, both on and off-the-field.”

“One of my key focuses will be to help introduce in the Pakistan men’s cricket team the same culture, mind-set, attitude and approach that once made Pakistan one of the most feared cricket playing nations,” he said.

The newly elected PCB chief said that as an organisation, we all need to get behind the national team and provide them the desired assistance and support so that they can produce that brand of cricket, which the fans also expect from them each time they step on to the field of play.

“Obviously, as a former cricketer, my other priority will be to look into the welfare of our past and present cricketers. The game has and will always be about the cricketers and, as such, they deserve more recognition and respect from their parent institution,” he added

Following the election, the newly-elected PCB chairman will address a press conference at the Bob Woolmer Indoor School at 2:15 pm.

As per the PCB COVID-19 Protocols, which are designed to ensure health and wellbeing of all involved, only reporters and correspondents who are fully vaccinated and have immunisation certificates are invited to attend the media conference.

Ramiz Raja advises cricketers to focus on cricket

Earlier on September 7, Ramiz Raja met the cricketers and advised them to don't pay attention to the changes in the PCB and focus on their cricket.

During a meeting held at the National High-Performance Center in Lahore, Raja told the players about his vision and roadmap.

Interim coaches Saqlain Mushtaq and Abdul Razzaq were also present in the meeting.

PM Imran Khan lauds Interior Ministry's role in Afghan evacuations

prime minister's meeting with Federal Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed in Islamabad
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Monday lauded the Ministry for Interior's role in evacuating thousands of Afghanistan and foreign nationals from Kabul after the Taliban took over the country on August 15.

The development came during the prime minister's meeting with Federal Minister for Interior Sheikh Rasheed in Islamabad, a statement from the Prime Minister's Office said.

The federal minister provided briefings to the prime minister on Islamabad's security situation, Rescue 1122 services, and the facilitation cell, the statement said.

Both the leaders also exchanged views on the country's border management, the statement said, three days after Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa had expressed satisfaction over the efficacy of the comprehensive border management regime.

Speaking to the media, United States Senator Chris Van Hollen had earlier in the day said that Pakistan's role in the current Afghanistan situation is very important.

The Democrat senator stressed the importance of contact between Washington DC and Islamabad.

On September 10, Pakistan had urged the international community to recognise the new reality in Afghanistan and engage with it for peace and stability in the region.

Speaking to the media in Islamabad along with his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Albares, Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said that isolating Afghanistan will have serious consequences.

The top Pakistan diplomat said the approach of intimidation, pressure and coercion has not worked and we got to adopt a new positive approach regarding Afghanistan.
