Govt places Ahsan Iqbal’s name on ECL
The federal government has placed Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) MNA Ahsan Iqbal on the Exit Control List (ECL), reported.

Sources having knowledge of the matter said the Ministry of Interior placed his name on the no-fly list.

His name was added to the ECL after approval of the federal cabinet, they said.

Iqbal is facing the Narowal Sports City reference filed by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Last year in November, the national graft buster filed the reference against the former federal minister.

As per the NAB, the sports city project conceived on the instruction of Ahsan Iqbal without any feasibility in 1999 was initially approved at a cost of Rs34.74 million by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP), which Iqbal headed.

Iqbal illegally directed the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and NESPAK to increase the project’s scope, enhancing the cost to Rs97.52 million, the NAB added.

Pakistan reports 140 deaths from COVID in past 24 hours
The novel coronavirus claimed 140 more lives across Pakistan over the previous 24 hours, pushing the death toll from the disease to 18,677, reported on Friday.

A total of 4,298 new infections were detected during the same period, taking the total number of confirmed cases in the country to 850,131.
According to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 44,846 samples were tested, out of which 4,298 turned out to be positive. The positivity rate of Covid-19 cases was recorded at 9.58 per cent.

On Thursday, National Command Operation Centre (NCOC) had given an additional task to the law enforcement authorities (LEAs) to manage entry and exit points at tourist spots during Eid holidays.

In special directives issued to the National Highway Authority (NHA) and Frontier Works Organization (FWO), the NCOC said that they should highlight banners at the toll plaza regarding the government’s decision to ban visits to tourist places during Eid holidays.

The NCOC said that the provinces have also issued directives to restrict movement during holidays, besides also banning tourist spots and hotels in these areas.

Board exams would begin in the country after June 15, Shafqat Mahmood

Federal Minister for Shafqat Mahmood on Thursday announced that board exams would begin in the country after June 15.

Taking to Twitter to share details on the board exams, Shafqat Mahmood said that Interprovincial Education Ministers Conference (IPEMC) took place yesterday and it was decided that Board exams would begin after June 15.

“Intermediate and Matric exams would be given priority so that results can come in before university admissions,” he said.

The education minister further clarified in another message from his Twitter handle that respective boards will announce the exact dates but in principle, exams will start after June 15 with priority to grades 12 and 10 to be followed by 11 and nine.

Yesterday, Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mahmood dispelled rumours that the examination for class 9 and 11 had been cancelled.

“No truth in rumours that exams will not be held,” said Shafqat in a Tweet.

The minister further clarified that examination for class 9 and 11 will take place according to the time table of the respective boards.

NAB seeks closure of illegal recruitment probe against Pervaiz Elahi

An accountability court has summoned the NAB prosecutor for arguments on May 18 over closing an inquiry pertaining to illegal recruitment against Speaker Punjab Assembly Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in its petition in the court argued that most of the accused of the illegal recruitment reference have passed away and some of them have retired.

The NAB has petitioned the court that its chairman has ordered closure of the inquiry. It sought the court’s approval to close the inquiry against Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

Recently the accountability court had granted a plea of the NAB Lahore to close an inquiry pertaining to assets beyond means of income against Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi.

The NAB while seeking the court’s decision argued that no iota of evidence found against Chaudhry brothers in assets beyond income inquiries.

The prosecutor stated that since no evidence of wrongdoing had been found against the PML-Q leaders in these cases, therefore, it was better to close the inquiry against them.

Eid ul Fitr: President Alvi grants special remission in sentences for prisoners

President Arif Alvi has announced a special remission of 90 days in sentences of the prisoners on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.

A special remission of 90 days is for all convicts except those convicted of murder, espionage, robbery, dacoity, abduction, anti-state acts and terrorist activities.

Earlier on May 4, a session of the federal cabinet chaired by the prime minister had approved 90-day remission to the prisoners on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid has said that the remission would not be applicable to inmates facing terrorism and murder charges, other heinous crimes and those who are facing corruption cases.
