NA-249 by-election: ECP hears Miftah Ismail’s recount plea

NA-249 by-election: ECP hears Miftah Ismail’s recount plea
The hearing on the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz candidate Miftah Ismail’s plea, seeking a recount in the NA-249 by-poll is underway at the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP), reported on Tuesday.

Ismail, last week requested the chief election commissioner (CEC) to take emergency steps for taking custody of the NA-249 by-election record.

A four-member commission of the ECP headed by Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja hearing the plea. PML’s Miftah Ismail, Marriyum Aurangzeb and Muhammad Zubair have reached the ECP headquarters, while lawyers of both Pakistan People’s Party and the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz have not reached yet.

In his application, Miftah sought emergency action by CEC to seize sealed ballot papers and other election material used in NA-249 by-polls. He had stated in its plea that the election material should be kept at a secure location until the emergence of the final result of the by-polls.

He demanded CEC to keep the election material in a safe location under the supervision of Rangers or the Pakistan Army. He thanked the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) for issuing a stay order on the results of NA-249 by-election.

Ismail claimed that the majority of presiding officers (POs) and election staff belong to the Sindh government which illegally supported the provincial government and each political party has registered their complaints against it.

16,000 Omanis saved from being laid off, labour ministry claims

16,000 Omanis saved from being laid off
Oman’s Ministry of Labour has said it convinced more than 90 companies to reverse their decisions to sack employees or deduct salaries during the first quarter of this year as a result of which 21,000 Omanis were saved from being terminated or have their salaries reduced, their local media reported.

According to the ministry’s 1st quarter report, more than 21,000 Omanis were able to maintain their job stability as they could avoid termination and furloughs or even from suffering any cuts in their salaries after negotiations the ministry held with the companies they work for.

The report stated that the ministry spoke to 58 facilities to prevent the laying off of 16,671 Omani workers and that it managed to retain 15,386 of them in their jobs.

On salary reductions, the ministry said it coordinated in this period with about 33 establishments that together employed 9,212 Omanis and was able to persuade them not to reduce remunerations of some 6,142 workers.

According to the ministry, 5,711 laid-off workers have benefited from the job security system as well, out of whom 4,526 are males.

ISS astronauts splash down off Florida on SpaceX craft

ISS astronauts splash down off Florida on SpaceX craft
A SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule carrying four astronauts back to Earth splashed down off Florida early on Sunday in Nasa’s first nighttime ocean landing in more than 50 years.

The crew reported they were feeling well after their arrival back on Earth following a nearly six-month mission aboard the International Space Station, Nasa said.

The capsule splashed down at 2:56am in the dark in the Gulf of Mexico off Panama City after a six-and-a-half-hour flight from the ISS, night-vision images relayed by Nasa’s WB-57 high-altitude research aircraft showed.

Teams aboard the Go Navigator recovery ship retrieved the capsule and hoisted it onto the deck about half an hour later. It was the first nighttime splashdown for Nasa since the crew of Apollo 8 arrived in the Pacific Ocean on Dec 27, 1968.

Commander Michael Hopkins was the first to emerge after the hatch was opened, doing a little jig as he set foot on deck, followed shortly after by fellow Nasa astronaut Victor Glover.

“On behalf of Crew-1 and our families, we just want to say thank you ... It’s amazing what can be accomplished when people come together. Y’all are changing the world. Congratulations. It’s great to be back,” Hopkins said in a Nasa tweet.

Nasa astronaut Shannon Walker and Japan’s Soichi Noguchi were the other two aboard.

“Welcome home Victor, Michael, Shannon, and Soichi, and congratulations to the teams at Nasa and SpaceX who worked so hard to ensure their safe and successful splashdown,” said new Nasa administrator Bill Nelson.

“We’ve accomplished another incredible spaceflight for America and our commercial and international partners. Safe, reliable transportation to the International Space Station is exactly the vision that Nasa had when the agency embarked on the commercial crew program.”

The four astronauts went to space last November as the crew on the first fully operational mission to the ISS aboard a vehicle made by Elon Musk’s SpaceX, which has become Nasa’s favoured commercial transportation partner.

They traveled 71.2 million miles (114.6 million kilometres) during their 168 days in orbit (including 167 days aboard the space station), Nasa said.

After medical checks, the four astronauts will be flown by helicopter to Pensacola to board a plane for Houston to be reunited with their friends and family, Nasa said.

“The reports are all four crew members are in great shape and in great spirits and doing really well,” Nasa chief flight director Holly Ridings said at a post-spashdown news briefing.

“Really just a great day. It’s not very often you get to wake up on the Space Station and go to sleep in Houston,” she said. Seven astronauts remained on the ISS including a new crew of four who arrived on a different SpaceX craft last week.

“Thanks for your hospitality,” Hopkins said earlier as the capsule undocked from the space station for its return journey. “We’ll see you back on Earth.” Prior to that, two American astronauts made a test mission to the ISS in May and stayed for two months.

That was the first launch to the ISS from US soil since the end of the Space Shuttle program in 2011. It was also the first crewed mission run by a private company, as opposed to Nasa. Until then US astronauts had caught rides to the ISS aboard Russian spacecraft.

Internet trailblazers Yahoo and AOL sold, again, for $5 billion

Yahoo
AOL and Yahoo are being sold again, this time to a private equity firm.

Verizon will sell Verizon Media, which consists of the pioneering tech platforms, to Apollo Global Management in a $5 billion deal.

Verizon said on Monday that it will keep a 10 per cent stake in the new company, which will be called Yahoo.

Yahoo at the end of the last century was the face of the internet, preceding the behemoth tech platforms to follow, such as Google and Facebook.

And AOL was the portal, bringing almost everyone who logged on during the internet’s earliest days.

Verizon had hoped to ride the acquisition of AOL to a quick entry into the mobile market, spending more than $4bn on the company in 2015. The plan was to use the advertising platform pioneered by AOL to sell digital advertising. Two years later, it spent even more to acquire Yahoo and combined the two.

However, the speed at which Google and Facebook have grown dashed those hopes and it became clear very quickly that it was unlikely to reach Verizon’s highest aspirations for the two.

The year after buying Yahoo, Verizon wrote down the value of the combined operation, called “Oath”, by more than the $4.5bn it had spent on Yahoo.

As part of the deal announced on Monday, Verizon will receive $4.25bn in cash, preferred interests of $750 million and the minority stake. The transaction includes the assets of Verizon Media, including its brands and businesses such as Yahoo and AOL.

The deal is expected to close in the second half of the year.

Shares of Verizon Communications Inc, based in New York, rose slightly before the opening bell on Monday.

Pure hard work crucial in my recent successes: Hasan Ali

Hasan Ali
Hasan Ali is the go-to man for Pakistan these days. For the second successive Test match, the 26-year-old pacer played a decisive part with a rich haul of wickets. Against Zimbabwe on Saturday, Hasan was at the forefront with a fourth five-for in 12 Tests.

Pakistan annihilated Zimbabwe some 30 minutes after tea on day three as they recorded their first victory by innings — and 116 runs — over the African nation in what was their 11th triumph in 18 Tests.

After grabbing a career-best 5-36 — and also surpassing the 50-wicket landmark — on way to recording match figures of 9-89 in the Harare Test on Sunday, Hasan dedicated his latest success in international cricket to his daughter Helena while saying the secret behind his newfound confidence is sheer hard work.

“This is a very special day in my life after what I had faced in my career. I cannot forget the period of depression that came my way after the [2019] World Cup when [a spate of] injuries put a halt to my playing days. But since coming back, Allah Almighty has been extremely kind to me,” right-armer Hasan told a virtual post-match conference from Harare on Saturday.

“Taking nine wickets and helping Pakistan to victory couldn’t have come at a more appropriate moment for me just days after the arrival of my little princess [daughter]. This is, indeed, a very special day and I dedicate my man-of-the-match award to Helena. I’m badly missing her right now but we are on national duty as country always come first in the list of priorities for any [professional] individual.”

Hasan, who bagged his second straight man-of-the-match award against Zimbabwe — he picked up four wickets in the final T20 International last Friday — further said that he is enjoying every bit of limelight and attributed his success to playing first-class cricket extensively before being recalled to the national side.

“I think there is no doubt in my mind what I have achieved in the second phase of my international career is mainly because of nothing but hard work, hard work and hard work. I promised myself that there was no substitute for fitness of a sportsperson and as long as one remains fit and strong there are more chances of success,” he said.

“The mental stress of not playing at all was a massive learning curve for me. I pledged that whenever I succeed in getting myself back to full fitness I’ll play as well as I could so that the cricketing world keep on remembering me …” Hasan said.

“The best way forward was to get involved in competitive cricket and fortunately I got the chance to play in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

“In conditions [in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy contests] which were challenging, I was mighty pleased with my own efforts. Getting the chance to lead Central Punjab was a blessing in disguise and then scoring my maiden century [in first-class cricket] that helped my side tie the final [against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa] gave me a tremendous boost.

“Thereafter, everything started clicking for me. Picking up 10 wickets [five in each innings] against South Africa [during the Rawalpindi Test] were just rewards for the sheer hard work I had put in my game. Of course, it wouldn’t be fair if I don’t offer my gratitude to Central Punjab head coach Shahid Anwar who was a great source of inspiration throughout,” Hasan, who was the player-of-the-tournament during Pakistan’s unforgettable campaign at the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy in England, recalled.

Biden to start reunifying migrant families separated by Trump-era border policy

President Joe Biden
The United States this week will reunite four migrant families separated at the US-Mexico border during the Trump administration, US officials said, a small step toward fulfilling a campaign promise by President Joe Biden.

The families will be allowed to enter the United States through an emergency process known as “humanitarian parole”, Michelle Brane, who heads a Biden-created task force that aims to reunite separated families, told a call with reporters on Sunday.

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is considering whether they could be granted longer-term immigration status, she said.

Lee Gelernt, lead attorney for the American Civil Liberties Union, which sued former President Donald Trump's administration over the separations policy, said his organisation did not know how many children remain separated from parents but that the number was likely more than 1,000.

The Biden administration has been grappling in recent months with a sharp rise in migrant crossings at the border, including unaccompanied minors and families with young children, mostly from Central America.

The Trump administration, known for its hardline stance on immigration, adopted a blanket “zero-tolerance” policy of prosecuting all unauthorised border crossers in spring 2018, resulting in the mass separation of parents from their children.

Trump reversed the policy that summer amid an international outcry, but advocates and government watchdogs found separations began before the policy and continued after it. In some cases, parents were deported and children remained in the United States with other relatives or sponsors.

Biden has called family separations under Trump a “human tragedy.”

DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who also participated in the call with reporters, declined to provide details about the families, citing privacy concerns, but noted that one is Honduran and another Mexican.

Both have been separated since 2017, he said, adding that the reunifications this week would be “the first of many.”
