PM Imran Khan gets vaccinated for coronavirus

PM Imran Khan gets vaccinated for coronavirus
Prime Minister Imran Khan received a coronavirus shot on Thursday, the Prime Minister's Office said.

According to Federal Parliamentary Secretary National Health Services Nausheen Hamid, the Federal Government Hospital's staff administered the vaccine.

After receiving the jab, the prime minister appealed to the people to continue exercising precaution in view of the third wave of the pandemic.

Earlier this week, President Arif Alvi and his wife Samina Alvi had been administered the vaccine.

Pakistan started its COVID-19 vaccination drive in February after the first arrival of China-gifted vaccine doses, with frontline health workers given the priority for inoculation, while on March 10, the country started vaccination for the general public, starting with people aged 60 and above.

The country is witnessing a spike in COVID-19 cases with 3,495 reported in the last 24 hours. In this period, 61 people were reported to have died from the disease.

Pakistan has so far recorded 615,810 cases and 13,717 deaths.

According to the Director General National Health Services Rana Safdar, so far more than 800,000 people have registered for the vaccine. These include healthcare workers and those who are aged 60 or above.

Safdar said that there are 8.5 million people who are aged 65 and above in Pakistan.

He said that among those who registered, more than 500,000 people have received the shot.

The NHS director general said that of those who got the jab, about a thousand people had complained of minor side-effects such as slight pain from getting the shot in the arm, headaches and low grade fever.

About a hundred people complained of vomiting and only a single case of allergy had surfaced.

No one had been admitted to the hospital after being administered the vaccine, he said.

Nawaz Sharif, Fazl ur Rehman discuss resignations from Parliament, PDM strategy

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman
Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman on Thursday discussed Opposition lawmakers' resignations from the Parliament and the Pakistan Democratic Movement's (PDM) strategy for the coming days.

The PDM had an important meeting on Tuesday after which the alliance announced it had decided to postpone its anti-government long march, which was scheduled to begin March 26.

Nine parties of the PDM had given their approval to resigning from the Parliament but the PPP had objected to the move. The party sought time from the alliance and said it would make up its mind in a meeting of its Central Executive Committee. The meeting has been called in the first week of April.

Sources said that Nawaz and Fazl decided that if the PPP does not agree to resign from the Parliament then the other nine political parties that are part of the PDM will announce their plan of action.

According to sources, both Fazl and Nawaz decided to summon an important meeting of the PDM after PPP makes its decision.

The two leaders also discussed a "Jail Bharo Tehreek" option — a form of protest in which where people get themselves voluntarily arrested in large numbers to fill prisons.

Earlier, Fazl had discussed matters relating to the Opposition alliance with former president Asif Ali Zardari.

Sources said the two leaders spoke over the phone and agreed to continue the PDM alliance.

"The two leaders also agreed on holding negotiations to settle contentious issues," said sources.

"Asif Zardari informed Fazl about the PPP's decision to convene a CEC meeting on April 4," added sources.

The two leaders discussed the nomination of the Leader of the Opposition in the Senate as well. Sources said the two leaders agreed on moving the court against Yousaf Raza Gillani's defeat in the Senate chairman election.

Putin replies to Biden ‘killer’ comment

Russian President Vladimir Putin
Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday mocked US President Joe Biden over his “killer” comment but said that Moscow would not sever ties with Washington over the spat.

Speaking at an event marking seven years since Russia’s takeover of Crimea, Putin said Moscow would continue working with Washington but aimed a barb at the US leader.

“It takes one to know one,” Putin said in televised remarks, using a saying from his childhood.

“That’s not just a children’s saying and a joke. There’s a deep psychological meaning in this.

“We always see in another person our own qualities and think that he is the same as us.”

Putin added that he wished Biden, 78, good health. “I’m saying this without irony, not as a joke.”

In an interview with ABC News on Wednesday, when asked if he thought Putin, who has been accused of ordering the poisoning of opposition figure Alexei Navalny, is “a killer”, Biden said: “I do.”

The US president’s remarks sparked the biggest crisis in bilateral relations in years, and later Wednesday Russia ordered its Washington ambassador back to Moscow for urgent consultations in an unprecedented move in recent diplomatic history.

Putin said the United States was “the only country in the world that used nuclear weapons”.

Russia, he added, knows how to “defend its interests” and will work with Washington on terms that are “beneficial” for Moscow.

“And they’ll have to deal with it.”
