Switzerland to ban wearing of burqa, face coverings in public places

Switzerland to ban wearing of burqa
Switzerland on Sunday has narrowly voted in favour of banning face coverings in public, including the burqa or niqab worn by Muslim women in a referendum, according to early projections.

After the polling stations closed at midday (1100 GMT), public broadcaster SSR and pollsters gfs.bern both projected that 51% had voted in favour of the ban.

In parallel votes, a trade deal with Indonesia seemed set to be narrowly accepted, while a plan for a state-backed electronic identity looked on course to be rejected, according to projections.

The anti-burqa vote comes after years of debate in Switzerland following similar bans in other European countries — and in some Muslim-majority states — despite women in full-face veils being an exceptionally rare sight in Swiss streets.

Campaign posters reading "Stop radical Islam!" and "Stop extremism!", featuring a woman in a black niqab, have been plastered around Swiss cities.

The ban would mean that nobody could cover their face completely in public — whether in shops or the open countryside. But there would be exceptions, including for places of worship.

A 2019 Federal Statistical Office survey found that 5.5% of the Swiss population were Muslims, mostly with roots in the former Yugoslavia.

The government and parliament opposed a nationwide ban.

Their counter-proposal — automatically triggered if the initiative is rejected — would require people to show their faces to the authorities if necessary for identification, such as at borders.

Under Switzerland's system of direct democracy, any topic can be put to a national vote as long as it gathers 100,000 signatures in the wealthy country of 8.6 million people.

Rounds of votes take place every three months.

A 2009 vote that banned the construction of minaret towers on mosques sparked anger abroad.

To pass, initiatives require support from a majority of voters nationwide, and from a majority of federal Switzerland's 26 cantons, six of which count as half-cantons in votes.

After the first four cantonal results, 53% backed the burqa ban.

Two other votes were held on Sunday.

One was on the free trade agreement struck between Switzerland and Indonesia.

Tariffs would be gradually removed from almost all of Switzerland's biggest exports to the world's fourth most populous country, while the Swiss would abolish duties on Indonesian industrial products.

Opponents, who are especially critical of Bern's move to reduce import duties on palm oil, successfully secured a popular vote on the deal.

But SSR and the gfs.bern institute projected that voters had narrowly given the trade deal the green light.

The other vote was on a government plan to introduce a federally recognised electronic identity that could be used for ordering goods and services online.

The idea is that the e-ID would be regulated by law, offering a degree of security and reliability when giving identity details on the internet. It could also be used to open a bank account or request an official document.

It was pushed to a popular vote by critics alarmed at the plan to rely on private firms for the IDs, giving them access to sensitive, private information.

SSR and gfs.bern said the plan seemed set to be comfortably rejected.

Pakistan to review 'school opening modalities' tomorrow amid surge in COVID-19 cases

The NCOC meeting is chairing by Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Asad Umar.
Given the alarming surge in coronavirus cases across the country in the past week, the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Monday decided to revisit its "school opening modalities" in its next morning session.

The NCOC meeting was chaired by Federal Minister for Planning, Development, and Special Initiatives Asad Umar.

The meeting discussed updates from the provinces on rising positivity and corresponding actions, vaccination progress, and national vaccine strategy.

The officials also considered deferring the opening up of cinemas, indoor weddings, and dine-in restaurants, which were expected to reopen from March 15. However, a decision on this has not been announced yet.

The meeting also reviewed the rising positivity trend prevailing across the country and expressed its concerns over public complacency in following non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs or alternate measures to treat the disease other than medical treatment).

The forum directed the provincial administrations to ensure strict enforcement of NPIs at the grassroots level to contain the disease spread as slackness in adhering to safety guidelines would trigger another outbreak.

The meeting was attended by National Coordinator Lt Geb Hamood Uz Zaman Khan. Provincial representatives participated in the meeting through video link.

Last month, the NCOC had decided to loosen some of the coronavirus restrictions that it earlier put in place.

The NCOC had added that the decisions could be reviewed again in view of increased disease prevalence, whenever deemed necessary.

Terrorism resurging in Pakistan: Interior Minister

Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed
Interior Minister Sheikh Rasheed on Monday said that terrorists are reorganising in Pakistan, a day after unidentified men shot and injured two policemen in the capital.

The interior minister's comments came after he visited the officers who were shot and were being treated at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS).

The federal minister said that there is no compensation for a person's life, and lauded the police for their sacrifices to maintain peace in the country.

Rasheed said that the police and the army have played a significant role in repelling terrorists. "Once again, terrorists are organising in the country. Two policemen have been martyred on the same day in the twin cities — Islamabad and Rawalpindi".

The minister said that the army had killed five terrorists a day ago, adding that the forces would do everything they could to defeat the miscreants.

"Terrorists will be defeated, and an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity will be established in the country," the federal minister assured.

Speaking about the incident where PTI supporters had charged on PML-N leaders, he said their actions were condemnable. "However, leaders should have addressed the presser at the designated spot."
