Google Doodle on International Women's Day
Google, which has a tradition of commemorating important through creative doodles, has paid tribute to women around the world on International Women's Day.

International Women’s Day is celebrated all across the globe every year on March 8.

Recognizing the importance of women's empowerment, Google has rolled out a 41-second video Doodle as an acknowledgment of women pioneers across different fields, different nations and different eras.

LHC restrains NAB from arresting Capt Safdar

The Lahore High Court (LHC) restrained on Monday the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) from arresting former prime minister Nawaz Sharif’s son-in-law Captain (retd) Muhammad Safdar

A two-judge bench of the LHC, headed by Justice Sarfraz Dogar, issued a notice to the corruption watchdog to submit its response to a petition filed by the PML-N leader. The court barred the bureau from arresting him until March 29.

Capt Safdar challenged the NAB’s call-up notice in an assets beyond means case.

Last week, the NAB directed him to appear before an investigation team at the NAB Lahore office at 11 am on Wednesday (March 10) in a case pertaining to his assets beyond known sources of income.

In the fresh notice to Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar, the anti-graft watchdog mentioned dozens of his alleged properties and sought his reply in this regard. Sources said that Captain (retd) Mohammad Safdar owned a flour mill near Sundar Industrial Estate and 200 kanal land in Raiwind.

“They are also @ forefront against COVID. Women in uniform have proved their mettle by contributing copiously in diverse fields serving the nation & humanity. They deserve our immense respect & gratitude” the Inter-Service Public Relations (ISPR), the military’s media wing, quoted the army chief as saying.

Separately, Minister for Science and Technology Fawad Chaudhry said in a Twitter message: “On this #womensday2021 I want to urge all the girls there go for Science subjects change your destiny and change this Nations destiny, stay blessed …. more power to you.”

Traffic routes and strategies for International Women's Day rallies across Pakistan

International Women's Day
Pakistan will see Aurat March rallies and sit-in across various cities on Monday in line with International Women's Day, with women and gender minorities coming out on the streets to protest the oppression they face in society

In order to facilitate traffic, here are updates related to the routes and strategies from some of the cities organising the Aurat March 2021.

Karachi
In Karachi, the Aurat March organisers, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, have instead put together the Aurat Dharna, which will ensure social distancing.

"6 foot ki doori, Magar inqilab zaruri (Please ensure 6-feet distance but the revolution is crucial)," they wrote in an update on the official Twitter account.

 In addition, Aurat March Karachi have continued with their practice of being inclusive, working with the NOWPDP —an NGO working for the rights of differently-abled persons — to make the dharna more inclusive and accessible.


Aurat March Karachi will be held at the metropolis' famed Frere Hall at 3pm.

Lahore
Aurat March Lahore's organisers have announced that the route for the rally will be "from Lahore Press Club to the front of the PIA building!"

"There is also a designated entry point for differently-abled and old people. It is the road between Governor House and Al Hamrah," they wrote on Twitter.

 The organisers stressed the importance of the coronavirus-related standard operating procedures (SOPs), which, organisers say, are mandatory to follow.

The event will commence at 2pm.

Islamabad
The Aurat Azadi March 2021 has been scheduled to start at 1pm on Monday, with the main event to start at the Islamabad Press Club. 

Quetta
Aurat March organisers in Quetta have announced that they will hold the Aurat Azadi Conference at 3pm at the Quetta Press Club, where women and gender minorities will gather to voice their concerns and issues.

 In the follow up to the March, organisers created polls asking if people were planning to attend the Aurat Azadi Conference and who they would bring alongside.

Multan
Multan will hold its second Aurat March this year, with the aim of "fighting patriarchy and Covid-19 simultaneously".

The rally will start at the Nawa Shehar Chowk, go through the LMQ Road and Abdali Road, with the main event and speeches scheduled to be held at the Multan Press Club. 

Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana
Aurat March Sindh organisers — representing feminists and allies from Hyderabad, Sukkur, and Larkana — have announced that their rally will start from the city's popular Shahbaz Building to the Hyderabad Press Club.

Professor Dr Arfana Mallah said the Women Freedom March will raise voice for women's rights and to condemn violence and harassment against them.

 Dr Mallah appealed the people belonging to all walks of life to participate in the march to condemn harassment against women and molestation of innocent, minor girls in the country.

International Women’s Day is celebrated all across the globe every year on March 8.

The main objectives of these events are to raise awareness about women's rights in society.

Aurat March’s 15-points agenda
Aurat March organisers have warned of extending their protest if the government fails to meet the demands listed in the 15-point agenda of the Aurat March within the given time frame.

In this regard, Sheema Kirmani, who is a renowned classical dancer and a member of the organising committee of the Aurat March, addressed a news conference at the Karachi Press Club on Friday.

She demanded that the government effectively implement laws formulated for the protection of women.

The Aurat March organisers are eyeing to put an end to forced conversions, pushing for the deployment of women and transgender persons at police stations, establishing desks to facilitate women and transgender persons at police stations and in courts, and increasing the number of female medico-legal officers.

They demanded the inclusion of representatives of feminists and transgender organisations in federal and national standing committees, the implementation of the state’s obligations under the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act 2018, and the protection of the transgender community in Sindh.

They urged the Sindh government to pass the proposed bill against forced conversions into law and to enforce the Protection Against Harassment of Women at the Workplace Act 2010.

The Aurat March demanded that shelter houses be established for women, transgender persons and non-binary people. They also demanded that child protection centres be set up.

Jazba project
To ensure women’s participation in politics, two civil society groups — the South Asia Partnership Pakistan and the Aurat Foundation — on Saturday announced starting the Jamhuriat Aur Baikhtiar Aurat (Jazba) project.

The project aims at improving the participation of women, minorities, people with disabilities and transgender persons in democratic and political processes by influencing the supply and demand sides of governance.

Addressing a news conference at the Karachi Press Club, Aurat Foundation Resident Director Mahnaz Rahman said that by engaging with the Election Commission of Pakistan on women's issues and demands and influencing processes and policies, the programme endeavour to involve and capacitate women in conducting political dialogues with civil society groups, political parties and media.

Awareness walk
Meanwhile, the Jamaat-e-Islami announced that the party’s women wing will hold an awareness walk outside the Karachi Press Club tomorrow in connection with International Women’s Day.

JI Women Wing had organised a seminar titled ‘Women and Family-ism’ at a local hotel. The party’s Karachi chief Hafiz Naeem-ur-Rehman, Women Wing General Secretary Durdana Siddiqui, former MNA Samia Raheel Qazi and other leaders spoke at the event.

They said that steps should be taken to avoid the use of women in media and TV plays. Durdana said: “We strongly oppose the use of women for promoting commercial products in the media, as this act is tantamount to disgracing womenfolk.”

Women Conference
The 2nd Women Conference kicked off at the Arts Council of Pakistan in Karachi on Saturday. Being held in connection with International Women’s Day, the two-day event will conclude on Sunday (today).

Noor Zaheer, a noted writer from India and daughter of the Marxist intellectual Syed Sajjad Zaheer, said while addressing the programme over the internet that holding women’s conferences is important to discuss women-related issues.
