ECP protected those who made money by holding Senate elections through secret ballot: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday lashed out at the PDM for "making a mockery of democracy", while also calling out the ECP for "protecting those who made money by holding Senate elections through secret ballot".

The premier made these remarks in an address to the nation where he explained the political situation in the country that emerged after Wednesday's Senate elections in which the opposition managed to stage an upset.

"It is important to talk about it and explain it, because the problems in our country can be understood through the kind of election that happened," the premier said at the start of his address.

He said when the PTI took part in the Senate elections six years ago, he realised that "money is used" in the polls for the upper house. This was not a new phenomenon, he said, but had been going on 30-40 years.

"The one who becomes a senator and wants to become one uses money and who do they buy? Members of parliament.

"So I was surprised when I came to know and since then I started a campaign that what joke is happening with our democracy? What kind of democracy is this?" he said, noting that the country's leadership emerged from the Senate elections and the parliament, and the prime minister and cabinet members were chosen from among lawmakers.

"So I was surprised since then that you're spending money, a senator becomes a senator by giving bribes, and on the other side [are] those MPs who are selling their conscience and voting after taking money, then what kind of democracy is this? Since then I started my campaign and I said since then that there should be open ballot."

In the 2018 Senate elections, Imran said he came to know that 20 PTI lawmakers had sold their votes after taking money.

"We expelled the 20 members but then I saw that it wasn't just me saying this, but the two main parties that signed the Charter of Democracy — the PML-N and PPP — had agreed that there should be open ballot because money is exchanged in the Senate elections," he added, saying PML-N leaders later also issued similar statements.

In view of the above, the premier said, the PTI presented a bill in the parliament seeking open ballot for the Senate polls. "Then we saw it wasn't happening and the parties which had said that there should be open ballot didn't support us. We then went to the Supreme Court and a whole case was heard in the SC. [During the hearings,] judges repeatedly asked about money being exchanged, and during that a video came out of MPs taking money ahead of the 2018 Senate elections, so no one had any doubt," he said.

He noted that while the matter was being heard in the apex court, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) opposed open ballot, while the SC repeatedly said that it was the ECP's responsibility to conduct honest and transparent elections.

"All the parties of the PDM (Pakistan Democratic Movement) then united and said together that there should be secret ballot when they all said in the past that there should be open ballot.

"Now I ask all of you, what in your opinion was the reason [for their stance]?" Prime Minister Imran asked the nation. "These parties wanted an open ballot before, then why did they all now push for secret ballot?"

He said the opposition had termed open ballot against the Constitution and democracy but asked: "Was it not against the Constitution when they signed the Charter of Democracy? They had placed a bill in the Senate and said at that time that there should be open ballot."

Radio Pakistan earlier quoted the Prime Minister's Office as saying that the premier was "likely to take the nation into confidence on the prevailing political situation in the country".

After staging an upset in the Senate elections, the opposition parties have managed to retain their majority in the upper house of parliament and are now hopeful of getting the top offices of chairman and deputy chairman for which elections through secret balloting will be held on March 12.

As expected, a hung Senate emerged on 37 seats of the upper house of parliament as the opposition and the ruling alliances now have 53 and 47 members, respectively, in the (now) 100-member Senate.

Hours after the ruling coalition’s candidate Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Shaikh suffered defeat at the hands of Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)'s joint candidate Yousuf Raza Gilani in a major upset, the government announced that Prime Minister Imran would seek a vote of confidence afresh from the National Assembly.

Rejected votes played a significant role in the upset with Gilani securing 169 votes as against 164 bagged by Shaikh, with the number of rejected votes exceeding the margin of victory.

PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari
PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday said that Prime Minister Imran Khan has been rejected by his own MNAs and allies.

Bilawal was addressing a press conference in Islamabad, alongside PPP leader Yousaf Raza Gillani, during which he said that PM Imran Khan will have to correct his ways and "stop creating a drama."

"You will not be able to escape. We will not give you an NRO. And we will not spare you," he said.

Bilawal went on to say that the "incompetent, illegal government" only brought pain and suffering for the people of Pakistan and claimed that "every citizen of the country celebrated the victory of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM)" after Gillani defeated PTI's Abdul Hafeez Sheikh in the Senate elections.

"The people of Pakistan celebrated the defeat of this puppet government."

He said that Imran Khan had promised to dissolve the assembly if he lost the Islamabad Senate seat but not when it's time to take the decision, the premier is scared.

"He's a coward and he is afraid of elections," Bilawal claimed. "After backtracking from the statement of dissolving the assembly, he is now creating a new drama by seeking a vote of confidence from the parliament."

"You will not be making decisions any more," Bilawal said to PM Khan. "I will tell you when and where will the no-confidence movement take place."

The PPP chairman said that the Opposition will carry on its fight against the incumbent government and will continue to expose its [wrongdoing], adding that "no one would be able to save the PTI-led government now."

Bilawal also claimed that he knows each and every MNA as well as the votes that were cast against him.

"I know which MNAs voted against the government because their conscience told them to do so," Bilawal said. "I also know who voted against the government out of spite for Imran Khan and Hafeez Sheikh."

Dollar reaches its lowest price in one year

 United States (US) dollar
Pakistani rupee extended gains against the United States (US) dollar at the start of Wednesday’s trading in the inter-bank market, touching a one-year high

According to foreign currency dealers, the local currency appreciated by 38 paisa to 157.47 against the greenback. Yesterday, the dollar had closed at Rs157.85.

Economic analysts say the rupee appreciation is a result of foreign inflows in shape of remittances and loans.

Workers’ remittances exceeded $2 billion for a record eighth consecutive month in January 2021. Pakistan received $2.3 billion worth of remittances last month, up by 19 per cent as compared to January 2020. However, remittances slightly decreased as compared to $2.4 billion in December 2020.

Whereas, the current account deficit reduced to US$229 million in January 2021 from US$652 million last month. The SBP said that for the first seven months of the fiscal year 2020-21, the current account surplus is $912 million, a significant turnaround from the deficit of $2,544million during the same period last year.

Personal protective equipment make wearers sick

Personal protective equipment make wearers sick
Personal protective equipment (PPE) required in operating rooms and intensive care units can make wearers sick, a small study confirms.

The findings help explain reports by clinicians of difficulty breathing, headache, and mental impairment while wearing the full protective suit that includes high quality mask, face shield and gloves, researchers said.

Among the eight surgeons who volunteered for the study, PPE impaired breathing, resulting in high blood levels of carbon dioxide and low levels of oxygen.

“Air re-breathed within the PPE mask after two hours was found to contain almost 8% carbon dioxide – 260-fold more than atmospheric levels (0.03%),” said Dr. Wyn Lewis of University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The changes were significantly greater than those seen with standard operating room garments, his team reported on Saturday in the British Journal of Surgery, and can cause fluctuations in brain blood flow, shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness, nausea, mental impairment, fatigue, and headache.

Three of the surgeons experienced headaches related to altered blood flow in a major brain artery. “These findings were observed in young, fit, doctors, posing the question of what might emerge in mature professionals with co-existing medical issues, or anyone working beyond this study’s two-hour limit,” Lewis said.

Govt nominates Sanjarani for senate chairmanship

Govt nominates Sanjarani for senate chairmanship
The government has nominated Sadiq Sanjrani, the incumbent Senate chairman, as its candidate for the chairmanship of the upper house of Parliament.

“Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced Sadiq Sanjrani for Senate Chairmanship,” Information Minister Shibli Faraz announced in a Twitter statement today.

In a related development, Sanjrani met with National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser. Responding to questions posed by journalists following the meeting, Qaiser said: “His personal opinion is that there is no better candidate than Sadiq Sanjrani [for the post of the chairman].”

He said a session of the National Assembly would soon be convened in order for Prime Minister Imran Khan to take a vote of confidence. 181 members of the lower house of Parliament will vote for the prime minister, he said.

Prime Minister Khan decided to take a vote of confidence from the NA after the government and coalition partners-backed candidate Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh lost a Senate seat from Islamabad to a joint candidate of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Mr Shaikh suffered defeat at the hands of Gilani in a major upset in yesterday’s Senate polls as the latter secured 169 votes as against 164 bagged by the former. The rejected votes played a key role in the opposition candidate’s win as these exceeded the margin of victory.
