Govt nominates Sanjarani for senate chairmanship

Govt nominates Sanjarani for senate chairmanship
The government has nominated Sadiq Sanjrani, the incumbent Senate chairman, as its candidate for the chairmanship of the upper house of Parliament.

“Prime Minister Imran Khan has announced Sadiq Sanjrani for Senate Chairmanship,” Information Minister Shibli Faraz announced in a Twitter statement today.

In a related development, Sanjrani met with National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser. Responding to questions posed by journalists following the meeting, Qaiser said: “His personal opinion is that there is no better candidate than Sadiq Sanjrani [for the post of the chairman].”

He said a session of the National Assembly would soon be convened in order for Prime Minister Imran Khan to take a vote of confidence. 181 members of the lower house of Parliament will vote for the prime minister, he said.

Prime Minister Khan decided to take a vote of confidence from the NA after the government and coalition partners-backed candidate Dr. Abdul Hafeez Shaikh lost a Senate seat from Islamabad to a joint candidate of the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM), former premier Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Mr Shaikh suffered defeat at the hands of Gilani in a major upset in yesterday’s Senate polls as the latter secured 169 votes as against 164 bagged by the former. The rejected votes played a key role in the opposition candidate’s win as these exceeded the margin of victory.

PDM leaders to discuss Senate chairman, deputy chairman elections

PDM leaders to discuss Senate chairman, deputy chairman elections
Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz have moved ahead to set strategy for the election of chairman and deputy chairman of the Senate after winning Islamabad seat of the upper house.

People’s Party and the PML-N leaders Bilawal Bhutto Zadari and Maryam Nawaz are expected to meet today to discuss the issue, sources said.

All member parties of the opposition’s Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) will be taken into confidence over the matter.

The leaders of two major parties of the opposition will discuss the strategy for the election of chairman and deputy chairman of the parliament’s upper house, according to sources.

The PDM parties joined hands in Wednesday’s Senate election to win the Senate seat from the federal capital for former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gillani against the prime minister’s finance adviser Abdul Hafeez Shaikh.

Former president Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday thanked PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-F (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman for supporting Gilani, the joint candidate of the PDM.

Well-informed sources said that the PPP co-chairman Asif Zardari telephoned Nawaz Sharif and Maulana Fazlur Rehman to extend his gratitude over support to Yousuf Raza Gilani in Senate polls.

“Gilani was the joint candidate of the opposition parties and his success is PDM’s victory,” said Fazlur Rehman. The members from the treasury benches are in contact with the opposition parties, claimed Zardari and Nawaz Sharif, sources said.

Matters related to the future course of the strategy of the anti-government movement also came under discussion, while they demanded of Prime Minister Imran Khan to step down from his office after losing Islamabad’s Senate seat.

Money Laundering Case: AC Extends judicial remand of Shehbaz Sharif

Money Laundering Case: AC Extends judicial remand of Shehbaz Sharif
An accountability court on Thursday extended the judicial remand of Muslim League-Nawaz president Shehbaz Sharif in a money laundering case.

At the outset of the hearing, the Ac judge served a show-cause notice to the deputy jail superintendent for failing to present Shehbaz Sharif before the court on time.

“The traffic jam caused late appearance before the court”, the deputy jail superintendent replied. Try to leave earlier if there is a traffic jam issue en route to the court, the judge directed the jail authorities.

Medical reports of Shehbaz Sharif were also presented before the court. Later, the accountability court adjourned the hearing until March 10 after extending the judicial remand of Shehbaz Sharif.

Sources said that Shehbaz formed 13 new Benami companies under the banner of Sharif Group of Companies and laundered Rs2400 million through these flimsy companies.

An investigation into money laundering charges against PML-N President Shehbaz Sarif and members of his family revealed that Shehbaz’s assets increased from Rs14.86mn to Rs7328mn in the past 20 years

Shehbaz made properties worth Rs619.85 million which include three homes; 96-H Model Town residence, Defence house and Doonga Gali house.

The declared assets by the PML-N president and his family in the year 2018 had gone up to Rs584 million while the latter had also succeeded in forming a proper money laundering set up in 2018.

Protests continues in Myanmar against the military coup, security forces firing kills more than 38 people

Protests continues in Myanmar against the military coup, security forces firing kills more than 38 people
Marking the most-violent day of unrest since last month's military coup with 38 deaths, Mayanmar pro-democracy activists have vowed to hold more protests on Thursday.

Police and soldiers opened fire with live rounds on Wednesday with little warning, witnesses said, a day after neighbouring countries had called on the junta to show restraint.

“We know that we can always get shot and killed with live bullets but there is no meaning to staying alive under the junta so we choose this dangerous road to escape,” activist Maung Saung Kha told Reuters.

“We will fight the junta in any way we can. Our ultimate goal is to remove the junta system from the roots,” said Maung Saungkha, who said his General Strike Committee of Nationalities group planned to hold a protest on Thursday.

Other activists said on social media at least two more demonstrations were planned in Yangon, as supporters of elected government leader Aung San Suu Kyi pressed for her release from detention and recognition of her victory in November elections.

UN special envoy on Myanmar, Christine Schraner Burgener, said in New York that Wednesday was the “bloodiest day” since the February 1 coup with 38 deaths, bringing the total toll to more than 50 as the military tries to cement its power.

A rights group and some media have given different numbers of wounded and killed after Wednesday’s violence. The dead included four children, an aid agency said. The media reported that hundreds of protesters were arrested.

A spokesperson for the ruling military council did not answer telephone calls seeking comment.

Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy party said in a statement that flags would fly at half-mast at its offices to commemorate the dead.

Schraner Burgener said she warned Myanmar deputy military chief Soe Win that the military was likely to face strong measures from some countries and isolation in retaliation for the coup.

“The answer was: ‘We are used to sanctions, and we survived’,” she told reporters. “When I also warned they will go (into) isolation, the answer was: ‘We have to learn to walk with only a few friends’.”

The UN Security Council is due to discuss the situation on Friday in a closed meeting, diplomats said.

UN Special Rapporteur Tom Andrews said the “systematic brutality” of the military was again on display.

“I urge members of the UN Security Council to view the photos/videos of the shocking violence being unleashed on peaceful protesters before the meeting,” he said on Twitter.

US State Department spokesperson Ned Price said the United States was “appalled” by the violence and was evaluating how to respond.

The United States has told China it expects it to play a constructive role, he said. China has declined to condemn the coup, with Chinese state media calling it a “major cabinet reshuffle”.

The European Union said the shootings of unarmed civilians and medical workers were clear breaches of international law. It also said the military was stepping up repression of the media, with a growing number of journalists arrested and charged.
