Karachi administration to start anti-encroachment operation along the nullah

In a bid to restore Gujjar Nullah to its original shape, the Karachi administration has all set to start an anti-encroachment operation along the nullah from Monday.

According to the details, the city administration has devised a strategy to raze all the illegal structures built along the Gujjar Nullah during the “grand operation”.

Karachi Central’s deputy commissioner wrote letters to the anti-encroachment cell, police, rangers, officials of SSGC and K-Electric in this regard. The deputy commissioner also sought heavy machinery and security for the grand operation.

Sources said that the original breadth of Gujjar Nala was 210 feet and it will be restored to its original design.

Earlier today, an anti-encroachment operation had commenced in Karachi’s Malir to demolish over 200 illegal farmhouses owned by influential people including political and religious leaders.

Following the orders of the deputy commissioner, an anti-encroachment operation had been started in Malir to demolish over 200 illegal farmhouses under the decision taken on December 11 – 2018 to cancel the 30-year lease on the government land across Sindh.

The farmhouses were reportedly owned by influential people including political, religious leaders and police officers. A farmhouse owned by the Opposition Leader in the Sindh Assembly Haleem Adil Sheikh was also demolished by the anti-encroachment team.

Coronavirus killed 53 more people in last 24 hours

The coronavirus claimed 53 more lives as another 1,346 people tested positive for the deadly disease during the past 24 hours across Pakistan.

According to the latest update released by the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC), 1,346 new infections surfaced after 36,954 samples were tested during this period. The positivity ratio of Covid-19 cases was recorded at 3.64 per cent.

The total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country has soared to 554,474 with addition of the fresh cases while the countrywide death toll jumped to 11,967. There are a total of 32,265 active cases as 510,242 people have recuperated.

Since the first Covid-19 case was detected in the country almost a year back, Sindh has reported a total of 250,648 infections, Punjab 160,580, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 68,338, Balochistan 18,859, Islamabad 41,934, Azad Jammu and Kashmir 9,199, and Gilgit Baltistan 4,916.

It is pertinent to mention here that a countrywide Covid vaccination drive started last week. 0.5 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine gifted by China is being used in the first phase. Sindh has been provided 84,000 doses of the vaccine, Punjab 70,000, KP 65,000, and Balochistan 10,300 doses.

Pakistan,s rank improved on democracy index

In yet another achievement, Pakistan moved three places up on the democracy index-2020.

Taking to social networking website, Twitter, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Political Communication Shahbaz Gill said that Pakistan jumped three places to 105th position on the democracy index released by the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

 


Pakistan was assigned a score of 4.31, 0.6 points higher as compared to 4.25 in the last year, he said, adding that the country had been ranked 108 in 2019.

 


Earlier on December 26, Pakistan Post had jumped 27 places to 67th position on the global index in 2020. According to the postal development report-2020 issued by the Universal Postal Union, Pakistan Post had moved up 27 spots from 94th to 67th.

President Alvi hopes Ali Sadpara, other K2 climbers are safe

President Arif Alvi hoped that mountaineer Muhammad Ali Sadpara and other climbers who were part of an expedition to ascend the second highest peak of the globe, K2, without oxygen would be fine.

“I hope that Ali Sadpara and other fellow climbers will be fine,” he said in a message posted from his personal Twitter account.

He lauded the courageousness of these mountaineers and said that all of them would pray for their safe return.

A Twitter message from the official account of the Government of Pakistan also prayed for the safe return of Muhammad Ali Sadpara and other fellow mountaineers.

Earlier in the day, it was reported that Pakistani mountaineer Muhammad Ali Sadpara — along with climber from Iceland John Snorri, is reported to be missing during his winter ascent on K2 and contact with the 3-member expedition has not been established for the last 25 hours.

The climbers went missing while returning to the basecamp 4, while Sajjid Sadpara reached basecamp 3 last night.

A rescue operation has now been launched to locate the missing climbers. Two helicopters of the Pakistan Army rescue team are taking part in the operation.

Sadpara along with his team was on a mission to summit the mountain in winter without oxygen.
