New Zealand beat Pakistan by an innings and 176 runs

New Zealand beat Pakistan by an innings and 176 runs
New Zealand made short work of Pakistan by bowling them out for 186 runs in the second Test match at Christchurch on Wednesday, thrashing the visitors by an innings and 176 runs.

Jamieson took three of the four wickets to fall after lunch as Pakistan went to tea on day four in Christchurch at 134 for seven, needing a further 228 runs to make New Zealand bat again.

The 2.3 metre (6ft 8in) Jamieson had figures of six for 38 to go with his five for 69 in the first innings to become the first bowler to take more than 10 wickets in a Test at Hagley Oval.

Although he is the junior member of a pace attack headed by higher-ranked veterans Tim Southee and Trent Boult, the 26-year-old Jamieson has rapidly advanced to playing a senior role.

Now in his sixth Test after making his debut against India 10 months ago, Jamieson has taken 35 wickets and has four five-wicket hauls to his credit.

When Pakistan resumed the day at one down for eight, and needing to bat for the better part of two days to salvage a draw, Boult took the first wicket when he had nightwatchman Mohammad Abbas out for three in the fifth over.

Since then it has been all about Jamieson, who removed Abid Ali for 26 to go with his dismissal of Shan Masood the previous evening and Pakistan were 69 for three at lunch.

In a potent middle session, Jamieson had Haris Sohail and Azhar Ali caught behind, and bowled Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan to have the tourists at 98 for six.

Sohail did not get his feet moving as he poked at a rising delivery on 15, the best score on what has been a disappointing tour for the left-hander.

Azhar had attempted to take the fight back to Jamieson, moving into a short delivery and pulling it through mid-on for four as he advanced to 37.

The boundary clearly irked the giant and in his following over, without Azhar adding a further run, Jamieson made a ball rear up towards the ribs and it was gloved to the wicketkeeper.

Rizwan was bowled for 10 by a full delivery as Jamieson worked through his variations to produce an inswinger that zipped between bat and pad.

Boult came back for his second wicket of the day when he dismissed Fawad Alam for 16, leaving Faheem Ashraf not out 21 and Zafar Gohar yet to score at tea

Amazon buys 11 aircraft to make deliveries faster

Amazon buys 11 aircraft to make deliveries faster
Amazon.com said on Tuesday it bought 11 Boeing 767-300 aircraft, as it looks to boost its delivery capabilities to cater to a surge in online orders.

The aircraft, including seven from Delta Air Lines and four from WestJet Airlines, will join Amazon’s air cargo network by 2022, the online retailer said in a statement here.

In June, Amazon had leased 12 Boeing 767-300 converted cargo aircraft from Air Transport Services Group Inc, bringing its total fleet to more than 80.

“Having a mix of both leased and owned aircraft in our growing fleet allows us to better manage our operations,” said Sarah Rhoads, vice president of Amazon Global Air.

The company said in October its heightened spending on delivery infrastructure would likely continue over years.

Hundreds protest against university rector appointed by Erdogan

Hundreds protest against university rector appointed by Erdogan
Hundreds of people demonstrated in Istanbul on Monday against what they claim is the politically motivated appointment of a rector at a top Turkish university by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

A reporter estimated the number at more than 1,000, with dozens of police officers watching the rally without intervening.

Anger erupted after a January 1 presidential decree in which Erdogan appointed Melih Bulu — a candidate in the 2015 general election for the president’s ruling party — as the rector of Bogazici University.

The protesters outside the public university’s campus included students outraged by what they alleged to be political interference.

They chanted “We don’t want an appointed rector” and “Melih, step down” while some held placards saying, “We want rights, why so many police?” and “Melih Bulu cannot be Bogazici’s rector”.

Erdogan assumed the power to directly appoint university rectors after surviving a failed 2016 coup, and it is not the first time his choice for Bogazici has caused controversy.

When Professor Mehmed Ozkan was appointed as rector in November 2016, there were tensions and upset from students and academics.

Rectors for Turkey’s universities were appointed through elections before July 2016.

England placed under lockdown till mid-Feb

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Monday a new national lockdown for England until at least mid-February to combat a fast-spreading variant of the coronavirus, even as Britain ramped up its vaccination programme by becoming the first nation to start using the shot developed by Oxford University and drugmaker AstraZeneca.

Johnson said people must stay at home again, as they were ordered to do so in the first wave of the pandemic in March, this time because the new virus variant was spreading in a frustrating and alarming way.

“As I speak to you tonight, our hospitals are under more pressure from Covid than at any time since the start of the pandemic,” he said.

Under the new rules, which are set to come into effect as soon as possible, primary and secondary schools and colleges will be closed for face to face learning except for the children of key workers. University students will not be returning until at least mid-February.

All non-essential shops and personal care services like hairdressers will be closed, and restaurants can only operate takeout services.

As of Monday, there were 26,626 Covid patients in hospitals in England, an increase of more than 30 percent from a week ago. That is 40 percent above the highest level of the first wave in the spring.

The UK has seen an alarming surge in coronavirus cases in recent weeks as public health officials struggle to control the spread of a new variant of COVID-19 that is more contagious than previous variants. Authorities have recorded more than 50,000 new infections a day since passing that milestone for the first time on Dec. 29. On Monday, they reported 407 virus-related deaths to push the confirmed death toll total to 75,431, one of the worst in Europe.

Hours earlier, Scottish leader Nicola Sturgeon also imposed a lockdown in her nation until the end of January.

Beginning on Tuesday, people in Scotland will be required to stay at home except for essential reasons, to help ease the pressure on hospitals and intensive care units, Sturgeon said.

The announcements come on the day UK health authorities began putting the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine into arms around the country, fuelling hopes that life may begin returning to normal by the spring.

Britain has secured the rights to 100 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine, which is cheaper and easier to use than some of its rivals. In particular, it doesn’t require the super-cold storage needed for the Pfizer vaccine.

The new vaccine will be administered at a small number of hospitals for the first few days so authorities can watch out for any adverse reactions. But the NHS said hundreds of new vaccination sites including local doctors offices will open later this week, joining the more than 700 vaccination sites already in operation.
