Kashmiris observing Right to Self-Determination Day today

Kashmiris observing Right to Self-Determination Day today
Kashmiris on both sides of the Line of Control (LoC) and the world over are observing the Right to Self-Determination Day today with a renewed pledge to continue their liberation struggle till it reaches its ultimate goal.

The day is being observed in connection with a resolution passed by the UN Security Council on January 5 – 1949 which supports the Kashmiris’ right to decide their future by themselves through UN-sponsored plebiscite.

Various activities including rallies, seminars and conferences will be organised across the world to remind the United Nations (UN) for implementing its relevant resolutions to settle the Kashmir dispute and save Kashmiris from the Indian brutalities.

Hurriyet leaders and organizations have called upon the United Nations (UN) and the international community to fulfil their pledge by granting Kashmiris their basic right of self-determination, according to Kashmir Media Service (KMS).

President Dr Arif Alvi said in his message the global community cannot shy away from their responsibility in guaranteeing a free and fair plebiscite in Jammu and Kashmir.

“The right to self-determination is a vital component of human dignity,” the president said in his message on the occasion of Kashmiris’ Right to Self-Determination Day.

“The negation of this right is the negation of human freedom, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and UN Human Rights Covenants,” he added.

He vowed that Pakistan will continue to extend all possible support for the just cause of the people of Jammu and Kashmir till the realization of their right to self-determination in accordance with the UN Security Council resolutions.

Prime Minister Imran Khan urged the international community to take action against the well-documented human rights violations committed by India.

Covid-19 variant: Britain imposes lockdown to bring under control the pandemic

Covid-19 variant: Britain imposes lockdown to bring under control the pandemic
New lockdowns were announced for England and Scotland Monday even as Britain began rolling out the Oxford-AstraZeneca coronavirus vaccine, a possible game-changer in fighting the disease worldwide, while EU nations were mired in finger-pointing over their own slow progress.

Following in the footsteps of the devolved Scottish administration, Prime Minister Boris Johnson said all of England, the UK’s largest nation, would close down from Wednesday — possibly into mid-February.

The latest virus moves are aimed at containing a severe wave of infections with a new coronavirus strain believed to spread faster.

“With most of the country already under extreme measures, it’s clear that we need to do more, together, to bring this new variant under control while our vaccines are rolled out,” Johnson said in a televised address.

Similar to a first March-June lockdown last year, the new moves include the closure of schools and a ban on leaving home for all but exercise and essential shopping.

As Britain handed out the initial shots in a first batch of 530,000 doses from the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) did not authorise a coronavirus jab from US-based Moderna despite bringing forward a special meeting, saying it would meet again Wednesday.

The EMA has already said the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab is unlikely to secure European approval in January.

Although the Pfizer-BioNTech inoculation is cleared for use in the EU, just 200,000 in Germany and a few hundred in France have received it — compared with more than a million in each of Britain, the US and Israel.

“It’s obvious that such a complex endeavour is always going to bring with it difficulties,” European Commission spokesman Eric Mamer told journalists.

In Germany, where Chancellor Angela Merkel’s government is under fire for relying on a Brussels-led vaccination procurement scheme, her spokesman Steffen Seibert said that “it was clear from the beginning that supplies would be limited at the start,” blaming a lack of production capacity for the bottleneck.

Meanwhile in France, a suspect in their early 20s was taken into custody on suspicion of helping organise a New Year’s Eve rave for 2,500 people in eastern region Brittany that was broken up by police after two nights.

Tesla 2020 deliveries beat estimates, but fall just short of Musk’s target

Tesla 2020 deliveries beat estimates
Tesla Inc on Saturday reported better-than-expected 2020 vehicle deliveries, driven by a steady rise in electric vehicle adoption, but narrowly missed its ambitious full-year goal during a punishing year for the global auto industry.

The company delivered 499,550 vehicles during 2020, above Wall Street estimates of 481,261 vehicles, according to Refinitiv data – but 450 units shy of CEO Elon Musk’s target.

Musk tweeted here he was “proud of the Tesla team for achieving this major milestone.”

“At the start of Tesla, I thought we had (optimistically) a 10% chance of surviving at all,” he said.

On Twitter, congratulations from supporters and bullish investors poured in, lauding the electric vehicle maker for its stellar year, which has defied wider auto industry trends of slumping sales, quarterly losses and global supply chain disruptions.

Tesla’s share price has risen more than 700% over the last year, the company has reported five consecutive quarterly profits and in December it was included in the S&P 500 index.

But some online investor accounts criticized Tesla for saying it had achieved its guidance.

Tesla at the start of 2020 said it would “comfortably exceed 500,000 units” for the year, a target it has left unchanged despite the pandemic. Chief Financial Officer Zachary Kirkhorn in October said Tesla was “aiming to achieve (its) original 2020 guidance.”

Tesla has pinned hopes on new markets such as Europe and Asia, with competition intensifying in its home turf as legacy automakers double down on their investments in the booming EV space.

Tesla’s delivery push has been supported by its new Shanghai factory, the only plant currently producing vehicles outside California. The carmaker said here Model Y production in Shanghai has begun, with deliveries expected shortly.

Palo Alto, California-based Tesla said it delivered 180,570 vehicles during the fourth quarter, a quarterly record for the electric carmaker, beating estimates of 163,628 vehicles.
