NAB personnel's assets should be checked, no one is above law: Mandviwalla

Senate Deputy Chairperson Saleem Mandviwalla
Senate Deputy Chairperson Saleem Mandviwalla on Monday said that assets belonging to National Accountability Bureau (NAB)'s personnel should also be scrutinised because "everyone is accountable and no one is above the law."

Mandviwalla was addressing the Senate's session on Monday during which he pointed out that NAB has turned into an institution which is "beyond anyone's control," therefore, the Senate and the Parliament should "seek a solution to end this misuse of power."

Mandviwalla said that whenever the country's anti-graft watchdog decides to launch an investigation into anyone's businesses, it first releases the information to media outlets to defame people and initiates the probe later.

"I have received more than a hundred complaints against the NAB, all in written form," he said. "Many federal secretaries also called me to say that they do not wish to work with NAB anymore."

He added that these are some "very serious issues," and they "must not be taken lightly."

Speaking about "numerous human rights abuses [allegedly] committed by NAB," Saleem Mandviwalla said that many people have died while they were in the bureau's custody.

"I have had meetings with the families of those who passed away in NAB's custody and I will meet them again. People who have been imprisoned are writing letters to me to help them get justice," he said, adding that the former Controller General of Accounts Khurram Humayun committed suicide after telling his family friends that he was really upset after NAB filed a corruption reference against him.

He also revealed that PPP senator Sherry Rehman's ex-husband was forced by NAB to record a statement under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure with reference to section 145 of Evidence Act.

"Is NAB above the law? I suggest there should be an investigation into the assets of NAB's personnel. Their degrees and domiciles should also be checked," Mandviwalla stressed.

Speaking about how NAB treated him and accused him of being involved in corruption, Mandviwalla said that everyone was surprised when "NAB hurled baseless allegations against the deputy chairperson of Senate."

"When the NAB probed me for alleged benami transactions, they recorded everything. I demand them to hand the footage over to media so that everyone could see what actually happened," Saleem Mandviwalla said.

He added that if the courts ever decide to punish him, he would be ready for that if he is found guilty.

"It is not about me, but we have to do something about NAB's behaviour for the sake of this country," Mandviwalla maintained.

Maryam Nawaz warns of 'other decisions' if PTI govt doesn't voluntarily go home by Jan 31

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz
PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz on Monday warned of "other decisions" if the PTI regime did not agree to leave "with dignity" by January 31 — the deadline set by the Opposition-led anti-government coalition under the Pakistan Democratic Movement's (PDM) banner.

A long march will definitely be held, Maryam Nawaz said, adding that its date will be announced depending on the people's convenience and weather.

She said the PDM definitely had a plan for the long march, which "will be held for sure".

The PML-N leader said that Opposition lawmakers will resign from assemblies as well, adding that if the PTI government did not agree to leave with dignity by January 31, then the masses will make "other decisions".

Speaking of the PDM rally in Bahawalpur a day prior, she said people broke the record yesterday in terms of attendance at the event. They "surprised me", she wrote on Twitter.

"Those here [in Bahawalpur] were saying such a large number of people had never come out here before yesterday. That is why I said yesterday 'Punjab has woken up'," she said.

With regard to the "reprehensible" Machh massacre, Maryam Nawaz said the incident of "sectarian terrorism speaks volumes about the heartlessness, indifference, and incompetence of the federal and provincial governments".

"Neither do they [the federal and provincial governments] know how to work nor how to reassure those who are grieving. Such a government has no right to impose itself on the people.

"The whole nation sympathises with its oppressed brothers," she added.

PPSC paper leak: Usman buzdar sets up inquiry committee

PPSC paper leak: Usman buzdar sets up inquiry committee
Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) exam paper leak.

The committee will be supervised by the CM's Inspection Team (CMIT) chairperson, Ali Murtaza. It will submit its report within five days.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) had arrested on Saturday a gang of four persons for allegedly leaking the PPSC examination papers.

The ACE investigation team said they had caught the four suspects red-handed just two hours before the paper for the 58 posts of Tehsildar, Consolidation/Hill Torrent Officer, Reader to Member Board of Revenue (BS-16) was scheduled to be conducted across Punjab.

As many as 103,487 candidates had applied for the competitive examination against the advertised 58 lucrative posts in the Punjab Revenue Department.

The PPSC is a national organisation and nobody will be allowed to play with its reputation, the Punjab CM said.

"The CMIT team will expose the elements who are involved in paper leak scandal," he said, adding that officials supporting the gang responsible for the paper leak will also be brought to book and the PPSC's reputation protected.

PIA set a new record, took a flight to Manchester with only one passenger

PIA set a new record, took a flight to Manchester with only one passenger
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) set a new record as it took a flight to Manchester with only one passenger on board Sunday.

PIA turned itself into a chartered flight as it only took a passenger hailing from Gujrat to Manchester. The passenger was the only one aboard the plane with a capacity of 371 people apart from the crew.

The news of the flight comes as the PIA is hoping to cut down staff to turn the national carrier into a profit making entity.

Recently, the PIA launched a voluntary separation scheme (VSS) for its employees and, so far, 2,000 employees have applied for it.

The PIA spokesperson had said that the reduction in the workforce via an honourable separation scheme, with an attractive package, was crucial for the airlines to execute its business plan.

"The response was very encouraging and we reduced nearly 20% of our regular workforce," said the spokesperson.

He said that the PIA will save around Rs2.5 billion from the iterations and the payback on investment will be two years.
