PPSC paper leak: Usman buzdar sets up inquiry committee
Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar has constituted an inquiry committee to investigate the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) exam paper leak.

The committee will be supervised by the CM's Inspection Team (CMIT) chairperson, Ali Murtaza. It will submit its report within five days.

The Anti-Corruption Establishment (ACE) had arrested on Saturday a gang of four persons for allegedly leaking the PPSC examination papers.

The ACE investigation team said they had caught the four suspects red-handed just two hours before the paper for the 58 posts of Tehsildar, Consolidation/Hill Torrent Officer, Reader to Member Board of Revenue (BS-16) was scheduled to be conducted across Punjab.

As many as 103,487 candidates had applied for the competitive examination against the advertised 58 lucrative posts in the Punjab Revenue Department.

The PPSC is a national organisation and nobody will be allowed to play with its reputation, the Punjab CM said.

"The CMIT team will expose the elements who are involved in paper leak scandal," he said, adding that officials supporting the gang responsible for the paper leak will also be brought to book and the PPSC's reputation protected.

PIA set a new record, took a flight to Manchester with only one passenger

PIA set a new record, took a flight to Manchester with only one passenger
Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) set a new record as it took a flight to Manchester with only one passenger on board Sunday.

PIA turned itself into a chartered flight as it only took a passenger hailing from Gujrat to Manchester. The passenger was the only one aboard the plane with a capacity of 371 people apart from the crew.

The news of the flight comes as the PIA is hoping to cut down staff to turn the national carrier into a profit making entity.

Recently, the PIA launched a voluntary separation scheme (VSS) for its employees and, so far, 2,000 employees have applied for it.

The PIA spokesperson had said that the reduction in the workforce via an honourable separation scheme, with an attractive package, was crucial for the airlines to execute its business plan.

"The response was very encouraging and we reduced nearly 20% of our regular workforce," said the spokesperson.

He said that the PIA will save around Rs2.5 billion from the iterations and the payback on investment will be two years.

Two cases of Covid-19 variant detected in Pakistan: NCOC
The National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC) on Covid-19 confirmed on Monday that two cases of the highly contagious coronavirus variant that first emerged in the UK have been detected in Pakistan.

It said the National Institute of Health (NIH) examined a number of samples taken from UK return travellers suspected to be carrying the new Covid-19 variant, out of which two matched with the variant, named B117.

The variant was first detected in Britain last month, the NCOC said, adding it has also been found in 31 other countries. It said Pakistani citizens returning from the UK need to take a mandatory PCR test for the new strain of the deadly virus.

Earlier, on December 29, the Sindh Health Department had confirmed that samples of three people returning from the UK showed a 95 per cent match with the new coronavirus variant in the first phase of genotyping.

Afghan peace talks to resume from tomorrow

Afghan peace talks to resume from tomorrow
A fresh round of peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban would begin in Qatar tomorrow (Tuesday) although months of deliberations between the two sides have yielded little so far.

In a major breakthrough last year both parties had finally agreed at least on what to discuss in the next round.

Afghan government negotiators will push for a permanent ceasefire and to protect the existing system of governance, in place since the ouster of the Taliban in 2001 by a US-led invasion in the wake of the September 11 attacks.

"The talks are going to be very complicated and time-consuming," Ghulam Farooq Majroh, a government negotiator told AFP.

"But we are hopeful to arrive at a result as soon as possible as people are tired of this bloody war."

The Taliban did not offer any comment. The first direct talks between the warring sides opened in September after months of delays, but quickly became bogged down by disputes on the basic framework of discussions and religious interpretations.

A concerted diplomatic effort from Washington finally led to a consensus. The negotiations follow a landmark troop withdrawal deal signed in February by the Taliban and Washington, which saw the US pledge to pull out all foreign forces from Afghanistan by May 2021.

The talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban have been marred by an increase in violence from the start, but a new trend is a wave of high-profile targeted killings of officials, activists, and journalists.

The deputy governor for Kabul province, five journalists, and a prominent election activist have been among those assassinated in Kabul and other cities since November.

Officials blame the Taliban for the mayhem, although the Daesh has claimed some of the assaults. "The Taliban aim to divide the people and trigger criticism and frustration against the government´s security institutions with these assassinations," Javid Faisal, an adviser to the National Security Council, told AFP.
