Wear a mask, PM Imran Khan says in appeal to nation amid second coronavirus wave

Prime Minister Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday once more appealed to the nation to wear masks amid an increasingly worrying coronavirus situation in Pakistan.

"An average of 40% of the country's hospital beds are occupied with coronavirus patients," he said, appealing to the nation to strictly abide by wearing a mask, as it is the easiest precaution and our first line of defense against the contagious disease.

The prime minister warned that a time will come when the hospital beds will no longer be vacant and there will be an added pressure on hospital workers, besides a more precarious situation for the elderly or people with secondary health concerns.

"Right now, following the rally in Multan, 64% beds reserved for coronavirus patients lie occupied," he added.

The prime minister explained that when a large gathering takes place, the fallout is seen about 10 days later.

He said similarly, 40% beds in Peshawar are occupied by coronavirus patients and about 50% of Islamabad's hospital beds reserved for such patients are occupied.

Spread of coronavirus in closed spaces

PM Imran Khan said that with winter upon us, and the temperatures will continue to drop. "Coronavirus spreads when people get together. In the open air, there is a reduced chance of its spread but when people get together in a room [...] around a heater, the numbers will increase," he said.

"If it continues to spread at the rate it is, our hospitals will be full."

Speaking of other countries, such as the US and Europe, he said that if the situation is so bad in places where there are far more resources available to fight coronavirus, one can only imagine how dire the situation will be for Pakistan.

"My aim in saying all this is to tell you: This is the time. We all need to exercise caution. Covering your face is the biggest SOP you can follow. When you wear a mask around people, the chances of contracting the virus will be greatly diminished."

'Hold rallies later'

Addressing Opposition parties, he appealed to them to rethink their strategy of holding mass rallies. "It will make no difference to the government whatsoever. But the people's lives will be put at risk."

He said that when people congregate for such gatherings, they don't wear masks.

"When you know this to be so [...] and there is so much pressure on medical workers as the beds continue to fill up, why don't you put off your rallies for two to three months so we can save people's lives?"

The prime minister said that wedding halls, schools and restaurants were all shut down and when the government speaks to stakeholders, they all say "you have stopped our businesses and our livelihoods are affected but you are allowing political rallies".

"So you are creating a lot of problems for us," he said to the Opposition.

'We've been blessed but now must help ourselves'

PM Imran Khan said that even in the rest of the world, in the second wave of coronavirus, the challenge is to have people follow coronavirus safety protocols. "Even in Europe people are resisting (against government prescribed rules)."

"Today in England there is a complete lockdown, as there is in California. We had saved our country from a lockdown becauses people's livelihoods are impacted.

"So it is of paramount importance we save ourselves from coronavirus and follow SOPs. In the first wave, we were saved by Allah because we all showed discipline and followed SOPs," the prime minister said.

He said in India and Iran things are far worse and many people are dying, whereas Pakistan has been blessed. "If we want these blessings to continue we will have to help ourselves and for that we must all follow SOPs."

The prime minister reiterated that rallies will create "no pressure on the government".

He said that all that will happen is that health workers, doctors, nurses, hospitals, elderly and the ill will come under pressure and risk "and it is for the sake of these people I appeal to you to follow SOPs".

Trump threatens to veto move against UAE arms sales

US President Donald Trump
US President Donald Trump issued a formal threat on Wednesday to veto congressional efforts to block his plans for $23 billion in military sales to the United Arab Emirates.

The Senate is due to vote on resolutions of disapproval of the sales this week.

In its policy statement, the White House said the sales directly support US foreign policy and national security objectives by “enabling the UAE to deter increasing Iranian aggressive behaviour and threats” in the wake of its recent peace deal with Israel.

The veto threat was expected. The administration told Congress on Nov 10 that it had approved the vast sale to the UAE of products from General Atomics, Lockheed Martin Corp and Raytheon Technologies Corp. The deal includes up to 50 F-35s, the world’s most advanced fighter jet; more than 14,000 bombs and munitions; and the second-largest sale of US drones to a single country.

US law requires congressional review of major arms deals, and lets senators force votes on resolutions of disapproval. But to become effective, the resolutions must pass the Republican-led Senate and Democratic-led House of Representatives, and garner two-thirds majorities in both chambers to survive Trump’s veto.

Critics said the Trump administration, seeking to rush the sales as it brokered a peace deal between the UAE and Israel, provided too little information, including about safeguards to ensure the weapons not end up in the wrong hands.

Some lawmakers are also worried that they might violate the US guarantee that Israel will retain a military advantage over other countries in the region. But Israel, which enjoys strong support in Congress, has said it does not object to the sales.

Past measures to block Trump’s arms deals have passed the House and Senate, but failed to garner enough support to override his vetoes.

EU DisinfoLab report: Pakistan slams India's propaganda, warns against false flag operation

Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri
Foreign Office spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri Thursday slammed India's smear campaign against Pakistan, reminding the world that New Delhi was planning a false flag operation against Islamabad.

Pakistan has time and again hinted at New Delhi's designs to conduct a false flag operation to attack Pakistan in a bid to divert attention away from its internal problems and issues.

Citing the recent report by EU DisinfoLab, Chaudhri, addressing a press conference, said that the research backs Pakistan's position against India and that all relevant facts were stated in it.

"India failed to tarnish Pakistan's reputation despite such moves [...] This propaganda is a part of India's campaign against Pakistan," the spokesperson noted.

He urged India to focus on its problems instead of working on instigating instability in the region. "The biases and discriminatory laws against minorities in India are in front of the world."

Similarly, reacting to the development, Minister for Foreign Affairs Shah Mahmood Qureshi said that it came as not surprise that the disinformation campaign was backed by India.

"15 yr global disinfo campaign designed in attempt to discredit [Pakistan] internationally & influence global decision making. ‘Incredible [India]’, powered by fascist ideals & disinfo that even puts Goebbels to shame," he added.

More than 750 Indian backed websites covering over 119 countries have been operational for about 15 years with the sole purpose of undermining Pakistan within the European Union and United Nations, a report on investigative research conducted by the EU DisinfoLab revealed on Wednesday.

The operation has been given a name — the Indian Chronicles.

EU DisinfoLab's investigation reveals that the Srivastava Group backed the operation, while a leading Indian news agency — Asian News International (commonly known as ANI) — was used to boost it.

This campaign started in 2005 and is still functional.

India's aim? To discredit countries in conflict with it, with a focus on Pakistan and to some extent, China.

The EU DisinfoLab highlighted the operation's long-term objectives, which included promoting content against Pakistan and China and to consolidate power for India at international forums such as the EU and UN.

To pursue their objective, the operation appeared to support minorities, human rights NGOs, and think-tanks. It also created an illusion of institutional support from European institutions to these minority groups against Pakistan and China.

At the United Nations’ Human Rights Council, the operation was used to arrange side-events and demonstrations in support of minority rights, impersonate extinguished UN-accredited NGOs and use speaking slots reserved to various NGOs whose original missions seem unrelated.

Fake media was created in Brussels, Geneva and across the world and then repackaged and disseminated via ANI and obscure local media networks — at least in 97 countries — to multiply the repetition of online negative content about countries in conflict with India.
