104 year old major participated in World War II defeat corona

104 year old major participated in World War II defeat corona
A former major who participated in World War II has defeated COVID-19 just two days before his 104th birthday in Albama.Major Lee Wooten was admitted to Madison Hospital in Madison, Alabama, to fight the virus last week.

On December 2, he had recovered from the virus but before leaving the hospital, the staff gave him a special send-off as he was going to be 104 years old after two days.

Wooten served in the US Army for several years overseas, according to CNN affiliate WAFF. He built railroads and worked on rail cars in Paris in the 1940′s.

His granddaughter, Holly Wooten McDonald, has posted Facebook updates about his recovery. Wooten requested a chocolate milkshake on the way home from the hospital, she said.

Holly said that Wooten was physically drained and a little fuzzy mentally after battling coronavirus but appears to be on the mend.

She said her grandfather, who served as a private first class in the Army before going on to a postwar career with US Steel in Birmingham, tested positive for COVID-19 on November 23 after her mother — his daughter — got the illness.

He received an infusion of the newly approved monoclonal antibody therapy bamlanivimab but was physically drained the next day and had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance the day before Thanksgiving, she said.

She said her mother recovered from COVID-19, and so did a sister who developed the illness and had to spend a week on a ventilator.

U.S. Supreme Court rejects Republican challenge to Biden's Pennsylvania win

U.S. Supreme Court rejects Republican challenge to Biden's Pennsylvania win
The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday handed a defeat to Republicans seeking to throw out up to 2.5 million mail-in ballots in Pennsylvania as they try to undo President Donald Trump’s election loss, with the justices refusing to block the state from formalizing President-elect Joe Biden’s victory there.

The court in a brief order rejected a request by U.S. congressman Mike Kelly, a Trump ally, and other Pennsylvania Republicans who filed a lawsuit after the Nov. 3 election arguing that the state’s 2019 expansion of mail-in voting was illegal under state law.

Pennsylvania was one of the pivotal states in the election, with Biden, a Democrat, defeating Trump after the Republican president won the state in 2016. State officials had already certified the election results.

There were no noted dissents from any of the justices on the court, which has a 6-3 conservative majority including three Trump appointees. Trump had urged the Republican-led Senate to confirm his most recent nominee, Justice Amy Coney Barrett, before Election Day so she could participate in any election-related cases.

Trump has falsely claimed that he won re-election, making unfounded claims about widespread voting fraud in states including Pennsylvania. Democrats and other critics have accused Trump of aiming to reduce public confidence in the integrity of U.S. elections and undermine democracy by trying to subvert the will of the voters.

Student, teachers taken to hospital after lightning strike hits school

Student, teachers taken to hospital after lightning strike hits school
Students and teachers have been taken to the hospital after a lightning strike affects 15 people at a school in Australia’s central Queensland.

The affected students aged between 10 and 12 and teachers of Clinton State School were transported to Gladstone Hospital for mild tingling symptoms on Tuesday afternoon, 7news reported.

According to Queensland Ambulance Service, the lightning strike hit a nearby location off Harvey Road at 1.33 pm and the affectees are in stable condition.

Greg Christensen, QAS Acting Senior Operations Supervisor, told local media that it was believed the strike came down between two trees on the oval where the children had been playing. “We ended up transporting 13 students and two teachers away from the location for observation,” he said.

“The main complaints were anxiety, the kids were pretty wound up after the incident, but also complaining of tingling to the lower limbs.”

The reports said that the children had been playing on the oval when lightning struck – some engaged in wet play for the last day of school. “It could have turned out very differently,” he said adding that they were lucky no one was burnt.

PayPal 'reward' email rapped for misleading

PayPal 'reward' email rapped for misleading
An email sent by payment giant PayPal which promised customers a reward of £10 for using their account did not make it clear enough that not everyone would receive it, the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has ruled.

It upheld a complaint from a recipient of the email, an offer limited to the first 28,527 people to respond.

PayPal said that it had made this clear in the terms and conditions.

But the ASA said the ad must not appear in its current form again.

"We considered that consumers were likely to understand from the subject line and headline claim that they would receive credit worth £10 from PayPal, and the subsequent qualification was insufficient to counter that impression, so we concluded that the ad was misleading and breached the code," wrote the ASA in its ruling.

In its defence, PayPal said that the marketing email "was designed to inform customers about the availability of the offer and included all significant qualifications and conditions".

The email from PayPal, received on 29 September 2020, featured the greeting: "Long time no see. Here's a £10 reward for you!"

The headline claim in the body of the email stated: "We're giving you £10 to use online with PayPal" followed by a clickable"Save Offer" button.

The fact the offer was limited to the first 28,527 people to apply was only stated in the small print below.

In recent months, the ASA has banned a series of online ads. In October it ruled that using fluffy animals in an advert for gambling site Gala Spins was irresponsible as it was likely to appeal to under-18s. Mobile game ads that showed content very different from the actual product were also banned.

And it has repeatedly warned social media influencers that their posts must make it clear if they are adverts.

Pakistan team released from managed isolation in New Zealand

Pakistan team released from managed isolation in New Zealand
The Pakistan cricket squad has been allowed to leave managed isolation to begin its preparation for Twenty20 and Test series against New Zealand.

All members of the squad tested negative on the 12th day of their 14-day stay in isolation and were allowed to travel to the South Island resort of Queenstown, where they can now train as a group.

The team’s exemption to train in smaller groups after the third day in isolation was revoked by New Zealand health authorities when players breached protocols by mingling in corridors and sharing food. Six members of the 53-strong squad tested positive for Covid-19 on arrival and two more subsequently returned positive tests and were moved to the quarantine wing of their hotel.

Earlier, New Zealand’s Ministry of Health reported 52 members of the Pakistan squad would be released from the quarantine facilities in Christchurch.

“One case will remain in the Christchurch quarantine facility until fully recovered,” the ministry said in a statement. “One person repeatedly tested negative and is being released from the Auckland quarantine facility today, where they had been transferred on arrival as a precaution.”

The person was reported to have shown symptoms of Covid after arriving in New Zealand from Dubai but has since tested negative.

“After extensive testing and completion of their time in managed isolation in Christchurch, the medical officer of health is satisfied these people pose a very low risk to the community,” the ministry said.

Cricketer Shadab Khan shared a picture with his teammates on Twitter with the caption "life and smiles after quarantine".

Head coach Misbahul Haq earlier was quoted as saying the players had suffered “mentally and physically” during their time in isolation.

“Top professional athletes require a certain environment to prepare so that they can perform at the minimum expected levels every time they represent their countries,” Misbah said in a statement issued by the Pakistan Cricket Board.

He said Pakistan players and officials “respect and understand” the health and safety regulations implemented in New Zealand to protect the community against Covid-19.

New Zealand is currently leading a two-test series against West Indies, and will host Pakistan in three T20s on Dec 18, 20 and 22 before a two-Test series starting Dec 26.

New Zealand’s borders have been closed to all but returning New Zealand citizens and residents, though exemptions have been allowed in the case of the touring West Indies and Pakistan teams. New Zealand has had only 25 deaths from Covid-19 and currently has no community cases.

“There is no denying the fact that the implementation of certain regulations has affected our athletes, both mentally and physically prior to an international series,” Misbah said. “I want to compliment my players and the management team for their patience, sacrifices and the hardships they have endured to ensure they not only lead the safe resumption of international cricket during the Covid-19 pandemic but also try to give their best every time they step on the field.”
