Shahid Afridi reveals what advice he gave to Naveen ul Haq

Former Pakistan cricket captain and Galle Gladiators skipper Shahid Afridi on Tuesday disclosed what advice he gave 21-year-old Afghanistan cricketer Naveen ul Haq.

A video of Afridi scowling at Naveen ul Haq went viral on social media, after the Galle Gladiators lost their Lankan Premier League 2020 clash on Monday.

As the two teams shook hands and Naveen came up to Afridi, the Gladiators skipper had an angry expression on his face and exchanged some words with him.

That exchange came after Naveen ul Haq and fast bowler Mohammad Amir exchanged harsh words on the field.

Taking to Twitter, Afridi revealed he told Naveen to "play the game and don't indulge in abusive talk".

"My advice to the young player was simple, play the game and don't indulge in abusive talk. I have friends in Afghanistan team and we have very cordial relations. Respect for teammates and opponents is the basic spirit of the game," Afridi revealed on Twitter.

Fast bowler Mohammad Amir threw his weight behind Afridi, telling him he was right.

It is nice to know that Afridi had sound advice to give to the young cricketer.

China successfully lands spacecraft on moon to retrieve lunar rocks

China successfully landed a spacecraft on the moon’s surface on Tuesday in a historic mission to retrieve lunar surface samples, Chinese state media reported.

China launched its Chang’e-5 probe on Nov. 24. The uncrewed mission aims to collect lunar material to help scientists learn more about the moon’s origins.

The mission will attempt to collect 2 kg (4-1/2 lbs) of samples in a previously unvisited area in a massive lava plain known as Oceanus Procellarum, or “Ocean of Storms”.

If the mission is completed as planned, it would make China the third nation to have retrieved lunar samples after the United States and the Soviet Union.

The lander vehicle that touched down on the moon’s surface was one of several spacecraft deployed by the Chang’e-5 probe.

Upon landing, the lander vehicle is supposed to drill into the ground with a robotic arm, then transfer its soil and rock samples to an ascender vehicle that would lift off and dock with an orbiting module.

State broadcaster CCTV said it would start collecting samples on the lunar surface in the next two days. The samples would be transferred to a return capsule for the trip back to Earth, landing in China’s Inner Mongolia region.

China made its first lunar landing in 2013. In January last year, the Chang’e-4 probe touched down on the far side of the moon, the first space probe from any nation to do so.

Punjab decides to register cases against PDM Multan rally organisers

The Punjab government has decided to register cases against the organisers of the Pakistan Democratic Movement’s (PDM) Multan jalsa, Chief Minister Buzdar’s special assistant Firdous Ashiq Awan said Tuesday.

The development comes a day after the 11-party alliance held a massive rally in Multan despite the government’s repeated warnings against doing so, urging it to suspend political gatherings in light of the novel coronavirus.

After scores of cases were filed against the PDM party workers and leadership, the alliance opted for an alternate venue at Ghanta Ghar Chowk, which is situated around 1km away from the original Qila Kohna Qasim Bagh Stadium venue.

”Among the organisers, 22 belong to PML-N, 16 to PPP, and 13 are of Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F)," said Dr Firdous Awan.

The chief minister's special assistant said that the cases will be registered against unidentified persons as well.

Speaking about the fire that had erupted during PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz was addressing the rally, she said: “We have uncovered the reason behind the fire that had taken place during the princess' speech.”

The special assistant claimed that the fire had erupted due to a PML-N worker’s fireworks.

Turning her guns towards the PDM chief, Dr Firdous Awan made him the target of sarcastic remarks.

She cited a video from the jalsa, stating that the PDM chief had instructed his workers to get into a fight with police. "Everyone knows Maulana's pain, he's sitting outside the assembly for the first time."

Further criticising Fazl, she said the Parliament does not function to satisfy an individual's desires. "When they bring the no confidence motion, we will see then [...] For now, these are blackmailing techniques."

Talking about the province's response to the jalsa, she said that the government had a successful strategy in Multan. "Decisions are made by looking at the situation."

Shedding light on the government's future course of action regarding the Opposition's rallies, she said that it will be decided according to the situation that evolves in Lahore.

Polices registers FIR

Shortly after Awan’s press conference, Multan police said that they had registered cases against PDM leaders for holding Multan rally despite restrictions.

The FIR lodged against the opoosition leaders includes the violation of coronavirus SOPs, and sound act, the police confirmed.

The police said that former prime minister Yousaf Raza Gilani’s three sons have also been named in the FIR. In addition, PML-N MNA Abdul Rehman Kanju and district president Bilal Butt were also named in the complaint.

Meanwhile, the police said that the FIR, registered at Multan’s Kotwali Police Station, is filed against scores of unidentified people.

Govt plans no curb on PDM rally in Lahore: Shibli Faraz

Federal Minister for Information Shibli Faraz on Tuesday said that although there is a ban on holding public gatherings, however, the government would not create any hindrance for the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) to hold a rally in Lahore.

“We will not stop anyone from attending the PDM public gathering in Lahore,” he said but added that action would be taken against anyone violating the law barring gatherings during the pandemic.

While justifying the government’s acts to impose restrictions on movement, he said that many countries have imposed a curfew during the second wave of COVID-19.

“Violations of SOPs could lead to a difficult situation,” he said adding that they are not bothered about the opposition’s public gatherings rather they are worried regarding the health of the masses participating in it.

He asked as to what opposition gained from turning Multan into a political battlefield during the pandemic and warned that in case of rising COVID-19 cases, the government had to force the closure of businesses, which have resumed owing to the successful policy of the government.

Even our hospitals are not able to bear the load of rising patients, he said.

Speaking over Ravi River Project in Lahore and Bundal Island project in Karachi, Shibli Faraz said that the projects would invite foreign investment besides also creating job opportunities for local people.

The Bundal Island project will attract US$60 billion investment and would benefit the people of the Sindh province, he said while assuring the stakeholders of the project that the federal government has no plans to take the project to Islamabad.

Govt okays procurement of Covid-19 vaccine

The federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan has approved funds to purchase the Covid-19 vaccine.

The cabinet meeting chaired by PM Imran Khan here in Islamabad approved $150mn to procure an anti-Covid vaccine. The health workers and people above 60 years of age will get the first doses of the coronavirus vaccine in the first stage.

Briefing media about the decisions taken in the federal cabinet meeting regarding the anti-Covid vaccines, Special Assistant to Prime Minister on Health Dr Faisal Sultan said that the cabinet has approved funds for the advance purchases of COVID-19 vaccines.

“Frontline workers will be given first doses of coronavirus vaccine in the first stage,” said SAPM Faisal, adding that elderly people will be vaccinated in the second stage while the common public will receive the first dose of vaccine in the third stage whenever it becomes available.

The government hopes to procure Covid-19 vaccine in the first quarter of 2021, SAPMDr Faisal Sultan told the media.

He further said that govt the cabinet meeting has approved a major reduction in prices of Remdesivir injection used to treat COVID-19 patients. “Govt has fixed price up to Rs5000 for a Remdesivir injection” he added. Earlier, the federal cabinet had fixed its price up to Rs10,873 on June 16.

Last week, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) had approved technical supplementary grant for the advance purchases of COVID-19 vaccines.

Faisal Sultan said the Standard Operating Procedures designed by the NCOC need to be followed indiscriminately by all sections of society.

The federal cabinet also approved an extension in service of the executive director of the National Institute of Health. The cabinet okays privatisation of Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) and plan for a golden handshake to the employees of the state-owned Pakistan Steel Mills.

The meeting was briefed over Naya Pakistan Housing Authority, Ravi Urban Development and Bundal Island project.
