Pakistan cricket team tests negative for coronavirus ahead of New Zealand tour

Pakistan cricket team
The national cricket team players have tested negative for coronavirus as they gear up to lock horns with New Zealand as the green shirts take on the Kiwis from December 18.

The coronavirus tests of all Pakistan men’s cricket team players and support staff were conducted. The squad leaves for New Zealand on the morning of November 23.

Pakistan announced its tour to New Zealand in September this year. The two teams will play three T20Is and two Tests from December 18 to January 7.

On their arrival, the team will enter a two-week quarantine period in Lincoln following the New Zealand government's COVID-19 protocols.

Earlier on November 11, Head Coach Misbah-ul-Haq had announced the 35-player squad for Pakistan’s tour to New Zealand.

Addressing a press conference in Lahore, Misbah had said that the upcoming series is “crucial” for the team as it will help Pakistan improve its T20I rankings and gain valuable points in the ICC World Test Championship.

“Against this background and taking into consideration recent player performances, we have selected the best available players,” said Misbah.

The head coach had stated that the tour schedule has been designed in such a way that the players “play tough intra-squad matches”.

One Pakistani soldier martyred, 4 terrorists killed during North Waziristan IBO operation

Sepoy Sadam
One Pakistani soldier has embraced martyrdom, while four terrorists have been killed during an Intelligence Based Operations (IBO) in North Waziristan on Sunday morning, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement.

An intense exchange of fire took place when security forces launched an attack on a terrorist hideout near Kaitu River, situated in North Waziristan's northwestern part of Spinwam.

According to the military's media wing, as soon as the troops cordoned the area, terrorists opened fire to distract them and flee from the site. All terrorists, however, were gunned down by security forces during the operation.

Sepoy Sadam, 27, who was a resident of Karak in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), lost his life while bravely fighting for the country. Meanwhile, two other Pakistani soldiers sustained injuries.

On Thursday, November 19, two soldiers of the Pakistan Army — Havaldar Matloob Alam, 32, and Seopy Suleman Shaukat, 25 — were martyred after terrorists opened fire on a security check post near Pash Ziarat in South Waziristan.

Last month, at least six soldiers were martyred in an improvised explosive device (IED) attack on a security forces convoy in North Waziristan.

Pakistan may go into 'complete lockdown', PDM will be responsible for consequences: PM Imran

PM Imran Khan
Pakistan will be compelled to go into a complete lockdown if the coronavirus cases continue to surge across the country at the same rate and the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) will be responsible for the consequences, tweeted PM Imran Khan on Sunday.

Taking to Twitter, the prime minister blamed the PDM for "deliberately endangering lives and livelihoods" by holding jalsas across the country with coronavirus cases in Pakistan on the rise.

"If [coronavirus] cases continue to rise at the rate we are seeing, we will be compelled to go into complete lockdown and the PDM will be responsible for [the] consequences," he tweeted.

Reiterating his often-repeated stance, the premier told Opposition parties that he would not grant them an NRO even if they held "a million jalsas".

"Opposition is callously destroying people's lives & livelihoods in their desperation to get an NRO. Let me make it clear: they can hold a million jalsas but will not get any NRO," he tweeted.

However, the prime minister said he did not want to take the lockdown measure as it would hurt the economy and create problems for the people. He lashed out at the Opposition by saying that its "only goal is NRO at whatever cost to the lives of people & the country's economy".

"I do not want to take measures like a lockdown that will start hurting our economy which at the moment is showing signs of a robust recovery. Unfortunately, the Opposition's only goal is NRO at whatever cost to the lives of people & the country's economy," he tweeted.

PDM, KP govt face-off over Peshawar rally

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had denied permission a few days ago to the PDM to hold a public gathering in Peshawar today.

Authorities had said that the matter was considered by the district administration and capital city police under Section 14 of the KP Civil Administration Act 2020. The government officials did a field assessment and held a meeting with the jalsa organisers.

But, citing a November 2 notification issued by the KP government banning large public gatherings owing to the rising coronavirus positivity rate in the community, the deputy commissioner denied permission to hold the jalsa "after considering all aspects, and to safeguard human lives due to potential spread of COVID-19".

However, the PDM said it would carry on its jalsa in Peshawar, with JUI-F chief and the PDM's president, Maulana Fazlur Rehman saying that the government was the "coronavirus".
