Pakistan reports more than 2 thousand new coronavirus cases

As the country is witnessing a sharp increase in coronavirus cases since the start of the second wave, the Covid-19 positivity rate has soared to 6.8 per cent.

As many as 38,983 samples were tested during the past 24 hours, out of which 2,665 turned out to be positive, according to the National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

The infection claimed 59 more lives across the country during this period, lifting the death toll from the disease to 7,662. The number of active Covid-19 cases increased to 36,683.

A total of 374,173 confirmed cases have been reported while 329,828 have recovered thus far. 653 of the patients under treatment are said to be in critical condition.

Since the outbreak of the coronavirus began, Sindh has reported 162,221, Punjab 114,010, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 44097, Balochistan 16,744, Islamabad 26,569, Azad Jammu and Kashmir 6,000 and Gilgit Baltistan 4,526.

Capt Safdar again tested positive for COVID-19

Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) leader Captain (retd) Safdar Awan has again tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

Safdar Awan had returned to Lahore from Gilgit after testing positive for COVID-19 on November 8. He was under treatment at the Sharif Medical City Lahore. After completing the quarantine process, the PML-N stalwart again went for the COVID-19 diagnosis test, but unfortunately again tested positive.

According to the spokesperson of the Sharif Medical City, the condition of Safdar Awan is stable and he has been advised to take rest for two more weeks.

Polling underways in GBA-3 Gilgit-3

Polling in GBA 3
The voting for the Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly (GBLA) Gilgit-3 seat is underway amid tight security measures.

At least 73 polling stations have been set up for the polls where 41,360 registered voters are exercising their right to vote. 1,754 security personnel have been deployed at the polling stations to ensure smooth polling.

As many as 15 candidates are taking part in the GBLA-3 election.

Polling that started 8:00 am will continue till 5:00 pm without any break. The election in GBLA-3-Gilgit was postponed due to the death of Pakistan Tehreek –e-Insaf candidate Syed Jafar Shah.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has secured two-third majority in the Gilgit Baltistan Legislative Assembly after six independent candidates on Friday had announced to join the party.

It is pertinent to mention here that seven candidates secured success in the Gilgit Baltistan polls as an independent candidate and six of them have so far joined the PTI, giving it the numbers in the legislative assembly to achieve the two-third majority in the house of 24 members.

The new induction had rose the number of PTI members in the legislative assembly to 16 including the six independent candidates besides also having the support of the Majlis-e-Wahdatul Muslimeen (MWM), which secured a seat during the polls.

‘Lives matter the most’: Punjab education minister

Punjab Education Minister Murad Raas said Saturday that he will take a "sensible" decision regarding the province's educational institutions, as lives mattered the most.

As the coronavirus cases rise and government mulls strategies to curb the virus' spread, the education minister said that he would make a decision based on data.

Pakistan recorded 42 coronavirus deaths in the last 24 hours — the highest since mid-July. This brought the country's death toll to 7,603.

The country also reported the highest single-day tally in four months as 2,843 people tested positive for the coronavirus, bringing the total number to 371,508.

"If I close the Schools people are not happy. If I keep the schools open people are not happy. Let me just inform everyone that decision will be made on DATA that is being given to me," Raas said in a tweet.

 

"Lives matter the most. Zero pressure on me from either side. Sensible decisions have to be made," the minister added.
