FO dismisses reports of American pressure on Pakistan to recognise Israel

 FO spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri
The Foreign Office on Tuesday dismissed a statement being attributed to Prime Minister Imran Khan about American pressure allegedly being on Pakistan to recognise Israel.

The report in question was published by the Middle East Eye. It said the premier told local media that "Israel's deep influence in the US" was behind the pressure.

Terming the statement as "fabrication", FO spokesperson Zahid Hafeez Chaudhri said PM Imran Khan has "clearly articulated" Islamabad's position that it would not recognise Israel until there was a just settlement of the Palestine issue — one that is satisfactory to the Palestinian peoples.

Chaudhri said the prime minister had stressed that the country's policy was rooted in Quaid-e-Azam's vision, adding that the remarks are "unequivocal reaffirmation of Pakistan’s position on the subject" and leave "no room for baseless speculation".

"For a just, comprehensive and lasting peace, Pakistan will continue to support a two-state solution per the relevant United Nations and OIC resolutions as well as international law, with pre-1967 borders and Al-Quds Al-Sharif as the capital of Palestine," reads the statement posted on Government of Pakistan's Twitter account.

'There's no question of winter vacations right now'

Education Minister Saeed Ghani
Provincial Education Minister Saeed Ghani on Tuesday ruled out the possibility of winter vacations in Sindh this year.

The provincial minister said students have been given more holidays than usual this year due to the coronavirus pandemic.

"Therefore, there's no question of winter vacations right now," he said.

He added that a final decision on the matter will be taken during a National Command and Operations Centre (NCOC) meeting scheduled for late November.

Ghani’s statement comes a day after Federal Minister of Education Shafqat Mahmood convened a special meeting of education ministers to decide on an NCOC recommendation to announce early and extended winter vacations.

Since there was no consensus, a decision on the matter was deferred till next week.

The Balochistan government, however, has announced early winter vacations today. The provincial education minister said winter vacations will start from December and the new education year will begin three months later, in March.

LHC bars govt from auctioning Toshakhana gifts

Lahore High Court
The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Tuesday restrained the federal government from auctioning precious gifts available in the Toshakhana of the Cabinet Division till further orders.

A single bench comprising LHC Chief Justice Muhammad Qasim Khan directed the government to submit its reply on a writ petition moved by Advocate Adnan Paracha against Toshakhana items’ auction slated for November 15.

During the hearing, a state counsel stated that the auction is held in line with the relevant laws.

However, the petitioner claimed that the auction is not advertised as only government officials are informed of the auction of precious gifts via letters. These gifts are being given to bureaucrats in violation of the laws, he added.

He said Toshakhana stores gifts given to a president, a prime minister and ministers by heads of other states and foreign dignitaries as a goodwill gesture but the government auction these valuables without following any legal procedure.

In order to keep the auction process under wraps, the federal authorities write letters to officials instead of inviting the public to participate in the auction via ads, the petitioner lamented.

The LHC suspended the operation of a government notification regarding the November 25 auction of Toshakhana items. The court directed the government to submit its response to the petition by December 9. It also put the attorney general on notice.
