At least two people killed in a gunfire incident in Vienna

Vienna, Austria
At least two people, including an attacker, were killed in a gunfire incident in central Vienna, police said late Monday.

Police said there was "one deceased person" and several injured, including one police officer.

Meanwhile, one suspect was "shot and killed by police officers," Vienna police said on their Twitter account.

The attack had been carried out by "several suspects armed with rifles", and police added that there had been "six different shooting locations".

Gunshots were fired at around 8:00 pm local time (1900 GMT), beginning at the Seitenstettengasse in the city´s centrally-located first district.

The shooting began just hours before Austria was to re-impose a coronavirus lockdown to try to slow the spread of Covid-19, and bars and restaurants were packed as people enjoyed a final night of relative freedom.

Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer told public broadcaster ORF that the incident "appeared to be a terrorist attack" and urged Viennese to remain in their homes.

Nehammer repeated police appeals to residents to keep away from all public places or public transport, and frequent sirens and helicopters could be heard in the city centre as emergency services responded to the incident.

An AFP photographer said that large numbers of police were guarding an area near the city´s world-famous opera house.

The location of the incident is close to a major synagogue.

The president of Vienna´s Jewish community Oskar Deutsch said that shots had been fired "in the immediate vicinity" of the Stadttempel synagogue, but added that it was currently unknown whether the synagogue itself had been the target of an attack.

He said that the synagogue and office buildings at the same address had been closed at the time of the attack.

Iran imposes travel restrictions as virus deaths hit record

Iran imposes travel restrictions as virus deaths hit record
Iran on Sunday said it will restrict travel to the cities hit hardest by the novel coronavirus, state TV said, amid a record high of daily Covid-19 deaths.

The measure takes effect at Monday midday and will last until Friday, the broadcaster reported, citing an order by the interior ministry.

The restrictions prevent residents from leaving and non-residents from entering based on vehicle plate numbers, but do not apply to public transportation, it added.

It applies to the capitals of 25 provinces considered “red” — the highest level on Iran’s colour-coded risk scale — and includes the capital Tehran with more than 8 million residents.

Violators will be fined, the order added.

Limited restrictive measures were imposed on Saturday in those cities, forcing the closure of some public spaces and businesses.

Iran has been hit the worst by Covid-19 in the Middle East, and has recorded several daily fatality and infection highs in recent days.

Daily deaths reached a record 434 on Sunday, health ministry spokeswoman Sima Sadat Lari said, adding that 7,719 more people tested positive for the virus in the past 24 hours.

In total, 35,298 people have died from coronavirus, according to official figures.

The rising toll has prompted several health experts and officials to call for a full lockdown in the capital.

COVID-19: WHO chief goes into quarantine

World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus
World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus is going into isolation after he revealed he had been in close proximity of someone who has since tested positive for coronavirus.

“I have been identified as a contact of someone who has tested positive for #COVID19. I am well and without symptoms but will self-quarantine over the coming days, in line with WHO protocols, and work from home,” Tedros said in a tweet.

A vaccine scheme co-led by the World Health Organization is setting up a compensation fund for people in poor nations who might suffer any side-effects from COVID-19 vaccines, aiming to allay fears that could hamper a global rollout of shots and prolong the pandemic.

The scheme is being set up by the promoters of the COVAX vaccine facility, which is co-led by the WHO and GAVI, a vaccine alliance.

Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports rise 22.6% in first quarter
Pakistan’s pharmaceutical exports rose by 22.6 per cent in the first quarter of the current fiscal year, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood said on Monday.

He tweeted: “Alhamdolillah, I am glad to share that our Pharmaceutical exports have gotten off to a good start this year. In value terms, our exports have grown by 22.6% in the first quarter (Q1) to USD 68.1 million as compared to USD 55.6 million in the corresponding period last year.”

“All this has been due to the hard work our Pharmaceutical exporters and renewed focus on exports,” he said, expressing gratitude to Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SPAM) on National Health Services, Regulations and Coordination Dr Faisal Sultan and his team for their “valuable” support to the pharmaceutical sector.

On October 27, Dawood had tweeted that the coronavirus pandemic was an unprecedented crisis in recent human history with far-reaching implications on the global economy.

He said recent figures released by the World Bank show that the pandemic has caused GDP contraction around the world, projecting that the major economies of the West, Japan, South Korea etc. will post negative growth rates.

“With the world returning to lockdowns, amid coronavirus resurgence, the demand for our exports may also be affected,” he said, appealing to exporters to be “vigilant and aggressive” so that they may be able to sustain their presence in the global markets.a
