Misbah aims to pick pool of 22 for Zimbabwe ties

Chief selector-cum-head coach Misbah-ul-Haq
Chief selector-cum-head coach Misbah-ul-Haq is planning to name a pool of 22 players during the second phase of the ongoing National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi for the One-day International and Twenty20 International series against Zimbabwe in Oct-Nov this year.

In a video message released by the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Misbah said though he had held an initial meeting with the panel of selectors — comprising of six coaches of the National T20 Cup participating teams — the second round of discussion would be held in Rawalpindi as by then the performances of maximum players would have given a clear indication.

“We have a plan to select 22 players for both formats [ODI and T20] for the Zimbabwe series. Further we are going release some of the players after the one-day series to enable them participate in the domestic season,” Misbah said.

The head coach hoped the National T20 Cup and the Zimbabwe matches would provide a perfect platform for the selectors to pick the best talent for the tour of New Zealand and two mega events next year, which includes the T20 World Cup and T20 Asia Cup.

Misbah said for the series against Zimbabwe, it will also be important that Pakistan win to raise the confidence level of the players, besides to test the best youngsters.

“It is our first priority to build a match-winning combination as victory against Zimbabwe will also raise the morale of the boys so we have to consider carefully how many youngsters can be tried,” he said.

Misbah added since Pakistan would be playing a One-day International after a long time, intra-squad matches would also be held to prepare the squad for that format.

Pakistan last played three ODI matches series against Sri Lanka in Karachi in September last year, winning it 2-0 after opening fixture was washed out.

No closure of educational institutions from Oct 15: Mehmood

No closure of educational institutions from Oct 15
Federal Minister for Education and Professional Training Shafqat Mehmood on Tuesday denied reports suggesting that schools and educational institutes would be closed once again over the growing number of coronavirus cases among students and teachers.

In a tweet, the federal minister said: “Fake news being circulated on social media that educational institutions will be closed on October 15. No truth in this.”

Likewise, refuting reports of schools closing again, Punjab Education Minister Murad Raas said that all public and private schools of Punjab will remain open as scheduled.

“Schools closing on October 15 is completely false. Please strictly follow SOPs,” he said in a tweet.

Statements from the lawmakers came as rumours circulated about the closure of educational institutions after coronavirus cases were reported among pupils and teachers at various schools.

Last month, the education minister had announced the resumption of educational activities from September 15 in a phased manner after new virus cases recorded a steady decline over the preceding few weeks. The government had in March decided to shut all education institutions to curb the spread of coronavirus.

On September 29, Shafqat Mehmood had said only one per cent of the COVID-19 cases had been reported in educational institutions since their reopening.

IHC summons Nawaz Sharif through newspaper advertisements after arrest warrants not received

former prime minister Nawaz Sharif
The Islamabad High Court on Wednesday summoned former prime minister Nawaz Sharif through newspaper advertisements after arrest warrants against the PML-N supremo were not received by his representatives in London.

It directed the federal government to bear the cost of the advertisements and the additional attorney general was asked to pay the fees within two days.

Earlier in the day, officials posted at the Pakistani High Commission in the United Kingdom informed IHC that a representative of Nawaz Sharif had initially agreed to receive the arrest warrants against the PML-N supremo, but changed his mind minutes before their arrival to the former prime minister's Park Lane residence.

In a written reply submitted to the court, First Secretary of the High Commission Dildar Ali Abro said that Waqar Ahmed, a secretary to Nawaz Sharif’s son, called him and informed him that he will receive the warrants for the former prime minister.

Abro told the court that Waqar initially agreed to receive the warrants at Nawaz Sharif's Park Lane residence in London. He then informed the High Commission of Waqar’s response, adding that the mission then allowed him to serve the warrants at the address.

“It was agreed with Waqar that he would receive the warrants on September 23 at 11am,” Abro told the court. He added that Waqar was also informed that the mission’s Consular Attache Rao Abdul Hanan would hand over the warrants.

“At 10:20am Waqar called me to apologise and declined to receive the warrants,” Abro told the court.

On the other hand, Hanan, in his statement, said that he had initially gone to the residence of the former premier on September 17 at 6:35pm to serve the warrants. He added that a domestic employee of Nawaz Sharif, Muhammad Yaqoob, had declined to receive the warrants, which is why the warrant could not be delivered to the former premier.

Chemistry Nobel Prize awarded to Charpentier and Doudna for genome editing method

French scientist Emmanuelle Charpentier and American Jennifer A. Doudna
French scientist Emmanuelle Charpentier and American Jennifer A. Doudna have won the Nobel Prize for Chemistry for the development of a method for genome editing, the award-giving body announced on Wednesday.

“Emmanuelle Charpentier and Jennifer A. Doudna have discovered one of gene technology’s sharpest tools: the CRISPR/Cas9 genetic scissors,” the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said in a statement on awarding the 10 million Swedish crown ($1.1 million) prize.

“This technology has had a revolutionary impact on the life sciences, is contributing to new cancer therapies and may make the dream of curing inherited diseases come true.”

“The ability to cut the DNA where you want has revolutionised the life sciences,” Pernilla Wittung Stafshede, member of the academy of sciences, told reporters.

Charpentier, who is French, and Doudna, an American, become the sixth and seventh women to win a Nobel for chemistry, joining the likes of Marie Curie, who won in 1911, and more recently, Frances Arnold, in 2018.

In keeping with tradition, chemistry is the third prize announced every year and follows those for medicine and physics earlier this week.

The prizes for achievements in science, literature and peace were created and funded in the will of Swedish dynamite inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel and have been awarded since 1901, with the economics award a later addition.

Like so much else, the pandemic has redrawn the Nobels, with many of the traditional events, such as the grand banquet, cancelled or moved online even as research into the disease — above all the hunt for a vaccine — has dominated the scientific spotlight.

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to file lawsuit against PM Imran Khan

Shahid Khaqan Abbasi
Former prime minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Wednesday that he will go to Lahore tomorrow and try to register a case against Prime Minister Imran Khan based on the allegations made on TV by former director-general of FIA Bashir Memon.

“I also want to get a case registered. I will go to Lahore tomorrow go to Shahdara; my FIR will be against PM Imran Khan,” the PML-N leader said in a news conference in Islamabad.

Abbasi noted that Memon had alleged that Prime Minister Imran Khan told him to register cases against PML-N leader Khawaja Asif under Article 6 of the Constitution. He added that the claims made by the former head of the FIA had proven that PM Imran is obsessed with the opposition.

Talking about the sedition case registered against Nawaz Sharif and other leaders, Abbasi challenged the ministers “distributing certificates of treachery” to becomes witnesses in the case. He also asked where were the ministers that were distributing those certificates when it came time to defend the case.

The PML-N leader further challenged the ministers to come forward and arrest the suspects in the case, asking the government to do an open trial in front of the people of Pakistan. He added that today, India and Modi must be "laughing" at Pakistan.

“What case for Kashmir will you fight when you keep in front of the world that prime minister of Azad Kashmir is an Indian agent,” observed the former prime minister.

Hitting back at the government, Abbasi asked the ministers not to distribute “certificates of treachery” and solve the problems of the people. He added that this why the Pakistan Democratic Movement was formed — to resolve the problems of the people.
