Shibli Faraz says govt 'strongly believes in freedom of expression'

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz
Condemning yesterday's murder of a social activist and journalist in Turbat, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Senator Shibli Faraz on Sunday said that the government "strongly believes in freedom of expression".

Taking to Twitter, the information minister said the tragic killing of journalist Shaheena Shaheen is extremely sad and reprehensible, vowing that the incident will be thoroughly investigated.

Noting that the protection of journalists is the responsibility of the government, the federal minister said that the state will fulfil its duty and will stand by the affected family and bring those responsible to justice.

According to the police, three bullets were fired at Shaheen. The circumstances of the murder are currently unknown.

Balochistan government spokesperson Liaquat Shahwani had termed the incident "extremely unfortunate" and said that the police were fully cooperating with the deceased's family.

"I had a conversation with DPO Kech. He told me that some people had left her body at the hospital," Shahwani said, adding that her uncle had received the body.

The journalist's mother wants to reach Turbat and file a police report, he had added.

Pakistan to respond in befitting manner if war imposed: COAS

Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa
Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Qamar Javed Bajwa in his speech on Defence day warned the nation of the perils of fifth-generation or hybrid warfare saying that its aim is to “discredit the country and the armed forces, and to spread chaos”.

"On this occasion, I would like to divert your attention to another challenge. This challenge has been imposed on us through the fifth generation or hybrid war,” said the army chief, while addressing an investiture ceremony held at the army's General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

The army chief vowed that the army would fight against the threat with the support of the nation and be successful against it.

Gen Bajwa, during the ceremony, conferred military awards to army personnel for acts of gallantry during various operations.

"Families of shuhada/ghazis, senior serving military officers/soldiers also attended the ceremony," according to a press release by the Inter-Services Public Relations.

The military's media wing said 40 officers were awarded Sitara-e-Imtiaz (Military), 24 officers and soldiers were awarded Tamgha-e-Bisalat and a soldier was awarded the United Nations Medal.

The medals of the martyred were received by their family members.

Pakistan seeks regional peace

While addressing the ceremony, Gen Bajwa said that Pakistan seeks peace in the region, adding that the country’s key efforts in Afghanistan were a testament to the fact.

He warned that neighbouring India — like always — has adopted an “irresponsible attitude”. He added that New Delhi took the “illegal step” of ending the special status of occupied Kashmir.

“India has once again threatened peace in the region,” said the army chief, adding that it was a fact that Kashmir was an internationally accepted dispute. He said that Pakistan does not accept “any such unilateral decision” of the Indian government.

“The founder of Pakistan had declared Kashmir as the jugular vein of Pakistan. We do not accept any unilateral decision related to Kashmir,” he. He also warned India that Pakistan would not be “intimidated” by stockpiling of newly acquired weapons by New Delhi.

“The armed forces of Pakistan are fully equipped, vigilant and aware,” noted Gen Bajwa, adding that they would respond befittingly to any move made by the enemy with full force.

“Pakistan is a living reality; our blood, passion, action will provide proof of this on every front,” said the army chief. He reiterated that Pakistan was a peace-loving nation but if war is imposed on it then it would give a stronger response than the enemy.

“We showed this by responding to the failed Balakot attack,” said Gen Bajwa.

Turning peace into prosperity

The army chief said that Pakistan faced great trials over the last 20 years with war on the eastern and western fronts. He said that the country, also faced natural disasters, such as floods and earthquakes, and the war on terror.

Gen Bajwa said thousands of people got displaced and many sacrificed their lives. He also noted that the country successfully fought against coronavirus and the locust attack.

He said in all those “challenging times” the country did not lose hope and fought against it head-on. He added that due to these sacrifices, Pakistan was peaceful today.

“Now we have to turn this peace into prosperity and development. We as a nation will have to struggle for it,” said the army, adding that the country will have to adopt the principles of unity, faith, and discipline and follow Quaid-e-Azam’s directives to "work, work and only work".

World acknowledges sacrifices of army

Earlier in his speech, Gen Bajwa said that Pakistan’s armed forces made a lot of sacrifices across the world for peace.

“The world acknowledges the sacrifices of the armed forces,” he said. He added that September 6, 1965, was an “immortal chapter” in Pakistan's history.

The army chief said that numerous stories of solidarity, patriotism, sacrifice and bravery came to the forefront on September 6, 1965. He added that the September 6 was not just a day for Pakistan but is a “testament to our courage”.

Gen Bajwa said that the day was observed throughout the country to remember the martyrs of 1948, 1965, 1971 and Kargil wars.

“This day reminds us that we defeated an enemy much bigger than us. We are ready today as well to defeat the nefarious plans of the enemy,” said the army chief.

He said that he salutes the families of the martyrs and assured them the country will never forget their sacrifices.

“Our martyrs are our heroes,” said Gen Bajwa, adding that those nations that forget their heroes are forgotten in history.

Tesla fan impatient for Cybertruck release builds a lookalike

Tesla fan impatient for Cybertruck release builds a lookalike
A Bosnian fan of both Ford trucks and Elon Musk’s Tesla could not just sit on his hands waiting for the electric carmaker to release its Cybertruck, expected from late 2021. Instead, he came up with his own version of the futuristic vehicle.

It took eight months for IT specialists and engineers at Igor Krezic’s Stark Solutions company to disassemble a rugged Ford Raptor F-150 into its smallest parts and then transform it into a petrol-powered vehicle that resembles a Cybertruck.

The first drive through the streets of the southern town of Mostar drew a lot of attention, Mario Coric, the company manager, told Reuters.

“Everybody was watching and half of them thought we made a tank, because people don’t know what the Cybertruck is. One girl even stopped and asked if this is the place where they are producing Tesla Cybertruck,” Coric said on Friday.

Krezic declined to speak to Reuters.

Though it may not look identical to Cybertruck’s functional prototype the pickup captures its spirit.

“The owner wanted us to combine two opposite sides — Ford and Cyber — because he is a fan of both Tesla and Ford, so we merged two souls into one,” he said.

“This one uses gasoline and Tesla uses electricity. We tried to copy as much as possible but our car is not the same size as the Cybertruck,” Coric added.

There was no immediate comment from Tesla and Ford.

Coric said Stark Solutions was now trying to register the pickup to be able to drive it on roads but they were encountering problems because sharp vehicle edges like those seen on the Cybertruck are banned in Bosnia.

Tesla plans to build its $1.1 billion Cybertruck factory near Austin, Texas, ending an intense competition with neighbouring Oklahoma, the carmaker’s chief executive Musk announced in July.

With a starting price of $39,000, the Cybertruck resembles an armoured vehicle and takes aim at the heart of Detroit automakers’ profitable truck business.

Usman Khawaja wants to get back to his birthplace Pakistan to play PSL

Australian batsman and Queensland’s Skipper, Usman Khawaja
Australian batsman and Queensland’s Skipper, Usman Khawaja wishes to get back to his birthplace, Pakistan, to feature in the country’s T20 league.

Despite a stunning six-month period in 2019 that reaped 1,085 One Day International (ODI) runs at 49.31, Khawaja has since found himself absent from Australia's 50-over squad, beginning with tours to India (January) and South Africa (February-March), and more recently when he was omitted from an extended 21-man playing group for the current white-ball tour of England.

The 33-year-old, who was born in Islamabad in 1986, has indicated that he would love to explore the option of becoming a Twenty20 gun for hire once his first-class and international playing days were behind him.

"There was a bigger squad (for the UK white-ball tour) so it was a little bit disappointing not to be in the team, but I mean I've been dropped and in and out of teams so many times that I've just learned to deal with it, much better than I would've say 10 years ago," Khawaja told cricket.com.au.

He said there were lots of competitions around the world which he has not played in yet.

“I’ve played Indian Premier League (IPL), and T20 cricket in England, but I haven’t played CPL (Caribbean Premier League) or even Pakistan Super League yet, which would be nice to do,” he said.

Khawaja, who has represented Australia in 44 Tests, 40 ODIs, and 9 T20s, scoring 4682 runs, said he has a great amount of following in Pakistan and would like to come and meet those people.

“Pakistan is obviously where my family is from, it’s where I was born and I’d love to get back there one day. I haven’t been there for 11-12 years so I’d like to tick that off the bucket list, too.”

“I’ve got a lot of support in Pakistan and it’d be nice to go back and see and meet some of those people,” he said.

COVID-19: Pakistan to run Phase 3 trials of vaccine developed by China’s CNBG

coronavirus vaccine
China National Biotec Group (CNBG) and Sinovac Biotech Ltd said on Saturday four more countries have agreed to run late-stage clinical tests of their coronavirus vaccine candidates, as China steps up its efforts in the global race.

Serbia and Pakistan are among the new countries agreeing to Phase 3 trials, as the two companies seek more data overseas amid dwindling new cases in China.

Serbia will test two vaccines developed by CNBG's Wuhan and Beijing units, and Pakistan will test the Beijing unit's candidate, the company told Reuters.

CNBG's Phase 3 trials are expected to involve 50,000 people in about 10 countries, said CNBG vice president Zhang Yuntao. Trials have already begun in United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Peru, Morocco, Argentina and Jordan.

Zhang said foreign countries have expressed interest in ordering a combined 500 million doses of its vaccines.

CNBG is expected to be able to produce 300 million doses of vaccine a year once it upgrades manufacturing techniques, and is working on a plan to raise its annual capacity to 1 billion doses, Zhang said.

Sinovac's vaccine candidate CoronaVac, being tested in Brazil and Indonesia, also obtained approvals from two other countries for Phase 3 trials, said Helen Yang, senior director of global strategy and business development at Sinovac.

She declined to name the countries as the information is still confidential.

While the final stage of trials are still underway to prove the vaccines are safe and effective, China has already authorized the vaccine candidates from Sinovac and CNBG for emergency use for those in high-risk groups such as medical workers.

Several tens of thousand people have already taken CoronaVac through the emergency programme, Sinovac's Yang said.

CNBG will soon begin providing its vaccines to Chinese staffers working in overseas embassies and consulates, Zhang said.
