Pakistan will never recognise Israel: PM Imran Khan

PM Imran Khan
Prime Minister Imran Khan categorically denied Tuesday that Pakistan would recognise Israel, a few days after the UAE established formal relations with Tel Aviv, stating that Islamabad won't do so until Palestinians are not given their right to a "just settlement".

“Whichever country wants to do it [recognise Israel], our stance is very clear. Our stance was cleared by Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah in 1947-48," said PM Imran. "Which was that we will never recognise Israel till the Palestinians do not get their rights."

He said that Pakistan will not establish diplomatic relations with Israel till the Palestinians do not get a separate state of their own, which the people of Palestine accept, based on the Two-Nation Theory.

The premier said that if Pakistan agreed to recognising Israel and gave up its principled stance then it will have to stop raising the issue of Kashmir as the situation in the disputed area was the same.

"Hence, Pakistan cannot recognise Israel," he stated.

It will be in US interest to rejoin Iran deal: Hillary Clinton

 Hillary Clinton
Former US secretary of state Hillary Clinton has criticized the administration of President Donald Trump for abandoning the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying it is in America’s interest to return to the multinational agreement.

During an Atlantic Council Front Page event broadcast on Monday, Clinton gave her views on how the next US administration should move forward with several domestic and international issues, among them the Iran policy.

Clinton, who served as secretary of state under ex-president Barack Obama, said the Trump administration could have tried to fix what it viewed as problems with the deal instead of abruptly pulling the US out of the accord in May 2018.

One consequence of Washington’s withdrawal from the Obama-era Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was that Iran and China strengthened their relations, she claimed.

The politician highlighted a 25-year partnership agreement that Iran and China are working to finalize and said, “I put that directly at the door of the Trump administration— that pulled the United States out of the Iran agreement that I began the negotiations for as secretary of state, and my successor John Kerry was able to bring to a very important conclusion.”

Clinton, the 2016 Democratic presidential nominee, said the next US administration should thus return to the Obama-era deal as a means of restricting the Iranian nuclear program and preventing an arms race in the Middle East.

She, however, cast doubt on whether Iran would be “receptive to that,” saying, “I think they may have moved on.”

Biden, the Democratic nominee for President, has increasingly signaled that he wants to renegotiate the international agreement with Iran.

Earlier in May, Anthony Blinken, one of Biden’s top advisors, acknowledged that the United States would have to rejoin the original deal before asking for a new one.

After pulling out of the landmark Iran nuclear deal in May 2018, Trump has been running what he refers to as a “maximum pressure” campaign, which has been seeking, in vain, to pressure Iran into negotiating a new deal that addresses its ballistic missile program and regional influence.

The Trump administration has also been attempting to fully kill the agreement, recently through a fruitless resolution to secure an extension a UN arms embargo on Iran.

Iran has repeatedly said it will not renegotiate the JCPOA, calling on the US to abandon its unilateral pressure policy and return to its commitments under the agreement.

Women journalists harassed over "difference of opinion”

Journalist Asma Sherazi, Gharidah Farooqi
Human rights minister Shireen Mazari on Tuesday asked women journalists to provide proof after a number of them accused Twitter accounts affiliated with the ruling PTI of harassment and abuse.

Mazari's comments came during a session of the National Assembly's Standing Committee on Human Rights chaired by PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari. The women journalists who originally raised the issue of harassment they reportedly face on a daily basis apprised the meeting's participants of the alleged attacks through video link.

The PPP chairperson read out the joint statement by the women journalists and commentators, wherein they had called to attention what they termed was a "well-defined and coordinated campaign", in which the "personal details of women journalists and analysts have been made public".

In her remarks, the federal minister said she too was a victim of such acts. "My daughter and I are also going through the ordeal of harassment," she said.

Noting that “all women face these challenges”, she said no women in any field should be treated in this manner.

'Action will be taken'
Mazari said the ruling party condemned such acts. "On behalf of the PTI, I condemn the harassment of women journalists," she said.

"There should be no abusive language on social media," she added.

The minister informed the committee that she had spoken to the PTI's official social media team and "they told me they do not engage in harassment".

"If anyone has proof, we will take action. Those who harass others using the PTI's name should be identified," she added.

"If someone believes any PTI account is engaged in harassment, they should point it out. Action will be taken against any PTI account engaging in harassment," she vowed.

Political leaders should warn workers

Speaking further on the harassment of journalists, especially women, the federal minister said all political parties must take steps in this regard and that the PTI was ready to do so.

"The leaders [of political parties] need to warn their political workers not to harass anyone," Mazari stated.

Expanding upon their viewpoints and experiences, the women journalists apprised the committee of the “vicious attacks", as well as "coordinated campaigns” against them, that made it challenging for them to carry out their work-related responsibilities.

Journalist's home 'broken into'

Anchorperson Asma Shirazi, one of the signatories of the statement, claimed the women journalists were being harassed for their "difference of opinion”.

"Twice, people have broken into my house to harass me. I don't know if the PTI's media cell or anyone else is involved in this harassment," Shirazi alleged.

"If we tweet, the comments that come below it are indescribable," she added.

Personal pictures 'morphed'

Analyst Reema Omer, the legal advisor for South Asia at the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), said the harassment of women online was "an undeniable and painful truth".

"There have been instances where pictures with my husband were doctored to add images of [Indian spy] Kulbhushan Jadhav," Omer claimed.

"Erroneous news reports cannot be a justification for harassment," she added.

'Campaign launched against me'

Journalist and anchorperson Gharidah Farooqi alleged that numerous groups — including the ruling party — "keep unofficial accounts for harassment".

"A campaign was launched against me, making it difficult for me to step out of the house," Farooqi claimed.

"We cannot meet anyone to interview them or get news from them."

While the women journalists were speaking of their experiences, PTI lawmaker from Karachi, MNA Ataullah, interrupted, saying he should be allowed to speak as well.

To which, the committee chairperson Bilawal advised him to let the women journalists speak first. "You will also have an opportunity to speak," he told the PTI lawmaker.

"There is no restriction on talking; we can sit here for two days. But it's important to listen to these women journalists who have travelled here to talk" about their experiences, the PPP leader said, adding that views from the committee members would also be sought afterwards.

China condemns new US sanctions against Huawei

China condemns new US sanctions against Huawei
Beijing on Tuesday hit out at new US sanctions against telecom giant Huawei, accusing Washington of an "abuse of national power" to block the rise of Chinese companies.

A US Commerce Department statement Monday barred an additional 38 Huawei affiliates from buying American computer chips and other technology.

Tensions were already high between the two powers, and Washington has claimed that Chinese firms are used to spy for Beijing -- an accusation the Chinese government and the companies deny.

Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian on Tuesday said there was no evidence that Huawei products contained security loopholes or backdoors.

The sanctions have "completely punctured the last pretence of market principles and fair competition that the US has always touted", he added.

Washington has engaged in "abuse of national power to apply all sorts of restrictions on Huawei and other Chinese enterprises," he said at a regular press briefing.

US officials have argued that Huawei poses a security risk because of its links to the Beijing government, a claim denied by the company.

Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said Huawei and its affiliates "have worked through third parties to harness US technology in a manner that undermines US national security and foreign policy interests".

The Trump administration has banned Huawei from 5G wireless networks in the United States and pressed allies to do the same.

Huawei became the largest global smartphone manufacturer in the past quarter, largely due to sales in the Chinese market, even as Washington moves to deny the company access to much of the Google Android system.

Zhao on Tuesday urged the US to "correct its mistakes," saying China would "continue to take necessary measures to protect the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies".

US President Donald Trump has also sought to ban the wildly popular mobile application TikTok if it is not divested by its Chinese parent firm ByteDance, and ordered a ban on the Chinese messaging app WeChat, owned by tech giant Tencent.
