Stuart Broad fined by father for Yasir Shah send-off

Stuart Broad now has three demerit points on his record.
England's Stuart Broad was fined and given one demerit point by his father Chris, for a breach of the ICC's code of conduct involving Pakistan's Yasir Shah during the first Test against Pakistan.

Broad was fined 15% of his match fee equivalent to around £2,000 for a level one breach and also given one demerit point for using inappropriate language when dismissing Yasir following a flurry of runs in Pakistan's second innings at Old Trafford on Saturday, hours before England completed a three-wicket win.

Broad admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Chris Broad, the former England batsman who is now a match referee.

The punishment prompted Broad to joke on Twitter that his father was "off the Christmas card and present list".

Broad senior would not normally be officiating in a match involving his son.

But in a bid to cope with travel restrictions imposed by the coronavirus, Chris Broad the only Englishman on the ICC's elite panel of referees together with a team of English umpires, is officiating in the current three-match series.

Chris Broad also presided over England's 2-1 win against the West Indies last month.

Under the interim COVID-19 regulations, all such decisions are referred back to the ICC's headquarters in Dubai to guard against accusations of bias.

But as Stuart Broad did not contest the charge brought by on-field umpires Richard Kettleborough and Richard Illingworth, there was no need for a formal hearing.

Stuart Broad now has three demerit points on his record.

The two previous instances concern Broad's use of a swear word towards South Africa's Faf du Plessis in Johannesburg in January and "aggressive language" directed at India's Rishabh Pant two years ago.

Demerit points stay on a player's record for 24 months, meaning the Pant sanction will lapse next week.

Broad, however, could risk a one-match ban if he commits a similar offence during the second Test against Pakistan at Southampton, starting on Thursday.

Pakistan, others confirm home tours for next season, says New Zealand Cricket

Pakistan and Newzeeland cricket teams
New Zealand Cricket (NZC) on Tuesday announced that all of its home series during the upcoming season, including Pakistan's tour, have been confirmed by the pertinent cricket boards and will go ahead despite the Covid-19 pandemic.

In addition to Pakistan's tour of New Zealand, Australia, Bangladesh and the West Indies have also confirmed their visits.

NZC chief executive David White said managed isolation arrangements for the visiting teams were still being worked out with officials in Wellington, but the tours would proceed.

"I was just on the phone to the West Indies, they;re confirmed, Pakistan is confirmed, Australia and Bangladesh, so (there will be) 37 days of international cricket," he told reporters.

White declined to release schedules of the tours until details had been worked out.

He said arrangements were likely to follow the model of bio-secure "bubbles" adopted in England for the recent West Indies tour — when teams' accommodation and training facilities were located at the match venue to isolate players.

"We're working through that with the government agencies at the moment, a similar concept... the agencies have been really supportive, the government´s been fantastic," he said.

All international arrivals into New Zealand are currently required to spend at least 14 days in strictly supervised quarantine.

But New Zealanders domestically are enjoying a near-normal, pre-coronavirus lifestyle with no social distancing and spectators allowed at sports and cultural events.

The South Pacific country has recorded only 22 coronavirus deaths in a population of five million, and this week marked 100 days since its last case of community transmission.

Punjab CM Buzdar appears before NAB

Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar
Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar appeared before the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in a case pertaining to allegedly issuing a liquor license to a hotel, illegally.

The Punjab chief minister arrived at the Bureau without any protocol, a stark comparison to PML-N vice-president Maryam Nawaz's appearance before NAB a day earlier.

According to NAB sources, issuing liquor licenses falls under the domain of the DG Excise, however, the Punjab chief minister allegedly used his influence in issuing them.

Last year in April, NAB had launched an investigation into Buzdar's alleged corruption after two complaints were filed with the anti-graft body against him.

Sources had said Buzdar was accused of getting a liquor-sale permit issued to a private hotel in Lahore.

The chief minister was also accused of getting a helicopter for his official use insured for Rs70 million, instead of Rs30 million, according to sources. Buzdar had directed to pay the insurance amount through a supplementary grant.

Sources had added that the Bureau had initiated proceedings for verification of the corruption complaints, for which the anti-graft body's Lahore bureau issued the directives.

The allegation had been rejected by then Punjab government spokesperson Shahbaz Gill.

SC petition against Khusro Bakhtiar and his brother

A two-member bench headed by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah
The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a constitutional petition seeking disqualification of Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Khusro Bakhtiar and his brother Punjab Finance Minister Hashim Jawan Bakht.

A two-member bench of the apex court, headed by Justice Mansoor Ali Shah, rejected the petition after hearing arguments from the petitioner who took the Makhdum brothers to the SC for allegedly concealing their assets at the time of contesting 2018 general elections.

Hearing the case at the apex court’s Lahore registry, the bench observed that there seems no flaw in the Lahore High Court’s verdict that turned down the petitioner’s request to de-seat the duo.

The court further observed the petitioner should have fulfilled all legal requirements of filing an election petition.

The petitioner in his plea alleged that the federal minister and his brother concealed their assets when contesting the general elections from Rahim Yar Khan constituencies.

He pleaded with the bench to declare that Khusro Bakhtiar and Hashim Jawan Bakht are not liable to be a member of the National Assembly and Punjab Assembly, respectively.
