NAB to get FIR registered against Maryam, others over clash with police

PMLN Leader Maryam Nawaz
The National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has called an emergency meeting to discuss the situation stemming from today’s chaos that ensued after PML-N workers clashed with police outside its office before party leader Maryam Nawaz’s appearance before the bureau.

Sources relayed the bureau has decided to get an FIR registered against Maryam and other party leaders as well as workers for stone-pelting police personnel and damaging public property.

They said the bureau in its emergency meeting will mull over summoning the PML-N leader again. They added she will be served a subpoena to turn up before NAB next week.

The police personnel deployed outside NAB office fired teargas shells to disperse the party workers and activists when they tried to force their way through the barricades placed there for security purposes.

They pelted the policemen and the office with stones turning the area into a virtual battlefield. More than 15 policemen sustained injuries as a result of stone-pelting.

Keeping in view the tense situation outside its office, the corruption watchdog cancelled Maryam Nawaz’s appearance. The PML-N leader initially refused to turn back and insisted on appearing before the bureau today, however, she relented later and headed back home.

Judge blocks Uber, Lyft from classifying drivers as contractors in California

Uber did not immediately respond to requests for comment
A California judge granted the state’s request for a preliminary injunction blocking Uber Technologies and Lyft from classifying their drivers as independent contractors rather than employees.

The ruling by Judge Ethan Schulman of San Francisco Superior Court is a defeat for the ride-hailing companies, as they defend against a May 5 lawsuit by state Attorney General Xavier Becerra and the cities of Los Angeles, San Diego and San Francisco.

Uber and Lyft had been accused of violating Assembly Bill 5, a new state law requiring companies to classify workers as employees if they controlled how workers did their jobs, or the work was part of their normal business.

In a 34-page decision faulting the money-losing companies’ “prolonged and brazen refusal” to comply with state law, Schulman said the plaintiffs showed an “overwhelming likelihood” they could prove Uber and Lyft classified drivers illegally.

“This is a resounding victory for thousands of Uber and Lyft drivers who are working hard – and, in this pandemic, incurring risk every day – to provide for their families,” Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer said in a statement.

Schulman delayed enforcing his order by 10 days to allow appeals, which Lyft said it will pursue.

California voters are expected in November to consider a ballot measure, Proposition 22, to classify app-based drivers as contractors. The state is Uber’s and Lyft’s largest U.S. market.

“Drivers do not want to be employees,” Lyft said in a statement. “Ultimately, we believe this issue will be decided by California voters and that they will side with drivers.”

Uber did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Several hundred thousand “gig” workers, including many at ride-hailing companies and app-based food delivery services, are affected by AB5, which took effect on Jan. 1 and had broad support from organized labor.

Schulman said the defendants’ argument they were not “hiring entities” covered by AB5 “flies in the face” of Uber’s claims in other litigation, and their “concerted effort” to overturn the law in November.

He also said the public could face substantial harm if drivers were denied employee benefits such as minimum wage, paid sick and family leave, unemployment insurance and workers’ compensation insurance.

“These harms are not mere abstractions; they represent real harms to real working people,” Schulman wrote.

The judge said Uber and Lyft had themselves to blame if their resisting state laws contributed to any “far-reaching” effects an injunction might have.

“Defendants may not evade legislative mandates merely because their businesses are so large that they affect the lives of many thousands of people,” he wrote.

Royal family lost a chance to have diversity by failing Meghan Markle

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry
Omid Scobie stepped forth to go into detail about the startling revelations that have been made in his explosive book on Meghan Markle and Prince Harry, with Carolyn Durand.

In an episode of Good Morning America, the royal reporter spoke to Deborah Roberts about the camaraderie between Meghan and Kate Middleton and their much-discussed royal feud that is signaled in his tell-all, Finding Freedom.

"These are two women that really have very little in common. I think being a newcomer and knowing that Kate was once a newcomer, I think there were times where she, from speaking to sources, knew that Meghan felt that she could of or needed a little bit more support from Kate and didn't get it in some of those important moments,” he said.

While all seemed cheery in the beginning when Harry first announced his engagement to the former actor, things seemed to have taken a turn after that.

According to a report by The Sun, the two duchesses had been in the middle of a dispute once as Kate had told Meghan not to shout at her staff as “this has never happened before” in the palace.

Another report had been circulating about the two fighting over the bridesmaid dresses to which Scobie said, the report couldn’t be “further from the truth.”

"When I spoke to the people who were actually there and involved, the first thing they all said was, 'There were no tears’,” he said.

He also spoke about detailing Harry and William’s relationship in the book, saying: “I felt it was important to really dive into this in the book because we had seen Meghan and Kate really blamed for almost driving a wedge between them.”

"You know, they're both men in their 30s and Harry not wanting to play that role of sort of the younger, more subservient brother anymore,” he explained.

He also said that the Sussex pair will be remembered in history for challenging the monarchy.

"History will remember them as a couple that were perhaps failed by the institution of the monarchy, where there was this chance to have a woman of color, an American woman of color, in the House of Windsor representing the monarchy just as much as her husband,” he said.

“That was a chance for the royal family to have diversity, inclusivity and representation in a way that no other moment in their lives could have brought.

And for them to not have harnessed that is something I'm sure historians will be looking at for years to come,” he added.

Maryam Nawaz's Appearance: PML-N workers, police clash outside NAB office

Maryam Nawaz's Appearance: PML-N workers, police clash outside NAB office
PML-N workers and police clashed outside the National Accountability Bureau's office Tuesday, ahead of party leader Maryam Nawaz's visit to the anti-graft body's office.

To show solidarity, PML-N workers in the form of a procession had accompanied the PML-N leader as she left for the Bureau’s office in Thokar Niaz Baig from Jati Umra.

However, NAB officials told her to head back as the situation deteriorated outside the Bureau's office when party workers and police clashed. In a video that she posted on Twitter, Maryam alleged that police pelted stones at her car which cracked her bulletproof vehicle's windshield.

In a tweet, the PML-N leader accused police of firing tear gas shells and baton-charging party workers.

In another video she posted on Twitter showing the cracked windshield of her car, the PML-N leader said,"Pelting stones at my car, police have broken its windshield. This is a bulletproof car and police are pelting stones and shelling [PML-N workers] in front of NAB's office to instigate workers," she said.

The clash ensued when PML-N workers were trying to remove barricades outside NAB's Lahore office and police tried to stop them. NAB officials conveyed to Maryam that it was not possible to record her statement due to the deteriorating situation outside the Bureau's office.

'I am standing outside NAB office, will not go back'

Maryam spoke to party workers to say that she had been summoned from her home so that she could be harmed. "I am standing here, if I have been called, then listen to me as well," she said.

The PML-N leader said that she had arrived outside the Bureau's office to "answer lies" and will not head back home.

However, the doors of the NAB office remain closed and no official of the Bureau has responded to Maryam's statement.

At first, Maryam's car could be seen heading towards Jati Umra after the message had been conveyed from NAB that proceedings had been postponed. However, her car then stopped outside the NAB office as PML-N workers and party leaders reconvened around her vehicle.

Earlier, while she was on her way to the NAB office, party workers showered flowers on Maryam's car and chanted slogans in favour of the PML-N leader.
