Twitter 'looking' at a possible TikTok tie-up

Trump demands US cut of Microsoft TikTok deal
Twitter has approached TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance to express an interest in buying its US operations, according to sources.

Video-sharing platform TikTok has been at the centre of fierce debate in recent weeks and takeover talk.

Last week US Donald Trump ordered firms to stop doing business with TikTok within 45 days over security concerns.

Tech giant Microsoft is the front-runner to buy TikTok but now Twitter has emerged as a possible suitor.

But it remains unclear whether Twitter can afford to buy TikTok from its Chinese owners and can complete a deal within the 45-day window, according to sources quoted in the Wall Street Journal.

The value of TikTok's US operations aren't clear but estimates put it at tens of billions of dollars.

Twitter's market capitalisation is about $29bn, dwarfed by Microsoft's at more than $1.6tn.

But experts believe a possible Twitter deal would face less regulatory scrutiny than Microsoft's.

A Twitter spokesman declined to comment on a possible deal while TikTok didn't respond immediately when contacted by the BBC.

TikTok threatens legal action against Trump US ban

Beyond TikTok: Who else might Trump ban?

Trump demands US cut of Microsoft TikTok deal

'Shocked'

Last Friday, Mr Trump ordered US firms to stop doing business with the Chinese app within 45 days. The Trump administration claims that the Chinese government has access to user information gathered by TikTok, which the firm has consistently denied.

In response to the US president's executive order, TikTok has threatened legal action against the US saying it was "shocked" by the move.

The US government also unveiled a ban on Chinese-owned messaging app WeChat as tensions escalate between the two countries.

Mr Trump said last week he would support Microsoft's efforts to buy TikTok's US operations if the government got a "substantial portion" of the proceeds.

He has set a deadline of 15 September for the deal to be completed or the ban will go ahead.

Microsoft said it "will move quickly to pursue discussions" for TikTok's operations in the US, Australia, Canada and New Zealand.

Punjab lifted lockdown, all educational institutes reopen from 15 September

All kinds of public transport have also been allowed to operate under SOPs
Punjab lifted the lockdown on Monday, allowing all sectors except marriage halls and educational institutes to operate under safety measures outlined by the government.

The Primary and Secondary Healthcare Department issued a notification following the decisions made in the August 6 meeting of the National Coordination Committee wherein it was decided to lift the restrictions on all sectors on August 10 and resume educational activities from Sept 15.

“All sectors except Marriage/Marquees and Educational Institutions are hereby allowed to operate from 10th August 2020 subject to adoption of SOPs/ guidelines,” read the notification.

Religious congregations will be allowed after approval of authorities concerned under health guidelines. Business hours and weekly holidays have been reverted back to pre-Covid-19 practice.

All kinds of public transport have also been allowed to operate under SOPs.

On August 6, Planning and Development Minister Asad Umar had announced that the government has decided to reopen dine-in restaurants, cafes, cinemas, parks and gyms from August 10 after a nearly five-month closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, he said, all schools and other educational institutions in the country will reopen from September 15.

Park Lane reference: Accountability court indicts former president Zardari

Former President Asif Ali Zardari
An accountability court in Islamabad indicted former president Asif Ali Zardari in the Park Lane reference today (Monday) via video link.

The accountability judge had directed authorities to ensure that the accused present himself for the hearing today. Zardari appeared before the court for today’s hearing via video link from his Bilawal House residence in Karachi.

Other suspects in the case also attended proceedings of the case via video link. Zardari told the court that his lawyer, Naek, was busy in court hence he could not be indicted today.

"Your lawyer knew beforehand about the date of today's hearing," responded the judge. "You will be indicted (today)."

The accountability court judge said that Zardari's lawyer could have sent his assistant lawyer to attend today's hearing. "These are just two simple sentences in English, you can listen to them and answer," said the judge.

Zardari requested the judge to write in his order that the charges were framed against him whilst his lawyer was not present in court.

"Charges are always framed against the suspect. If his or her lawyer does not present himself before the court, we cannot force [the lawyer] to do so," replied the judge.

The judge then proceeded to read out the charges against Zardari. The former president pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Beirut Explosion: UK pledges another £20 million aid

Beirut port explosion
The UK is set to escalate its involvement in Lebanon following the Beirut port explosion on August 04 which devastated large swathes of the Lebanese capital.

Taking to Twitter, Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, pledged £20 million in aid to Lebanon ostensibly to “help the most vulnerable”.

According to the government, the funds will be directly allocated to those “injured and displaced by the explosion” by providing “access to food and medicine as well as other urgent supplies”.

The latest offer of aid is on top of the £5 million so-called “emergency relief effort” which the UK pledged immediately after the explosion which killed nearly 160 people, injured more than 5,000 and left up to 300,000 people homeless.

In the immediate aftermath of the explosion the UK also announced it will send the Royal Navy survey ship HMS Enterprise to the port of Beirut as part of a “wide-ranging package of military support”.

The British government’s decision to escalate its involvement in Lebanon comes in the wake of French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Beirut on August 06 where he blatantly interfered in Lebanon’s internal affairs by calling for the overhaul of the country’s political system.

As part of a broader effort to enhance Britain’s profile in Lebanon, Johnson spoke with the Lebanese President, Michel Aoun, in a phone call yesterday (August 08) where he reportedly said the UK would “stand by the country [Lebanon] in its hour of need”.
