Australia's Victoria reports deadliest day of COVID-19 pandemic

Australia's Victoria reports deadliest day of COVID-19 pandemic
Australia’s second-most populous state, Victoria, reported its deadliest day of the COVID-19 outbreak on Sunday, with 17 people dying, although new infections showed signs of easing.

Victoria, at the centre of a second wave of infections in Australia, reported 394 cases of the novel coronavirus in the past 24 hours, compared with a daily average of 400-500 over the past week. The new deaths bring the state’s total to 210.

The southeastern state, with infections concentrated in the capital Melbourne, accounts for more than two-thirds of the national tally of nearly 21,000.

In an effort to slow the spread of coronavirus, Victoria has imposed a night curfew, tightened restrictions on people’s daily movements and ordered large parts of the economy to close.

Those measures have helped, although the situation remains challenging, as cases with unknown sources of infection continue to increase, said Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews.

The state reported 174 such “mystery” cases in the past 24 hours, up from 130 on Saturday and bringing the total to 2,758.

“Even large numbers in known contained outbreaks are, to a certain extent, less significant than the smaller number of cases where we simply can’t find the circumstance or point of origin,” Andrews told reporters.

“They’re the ones that are incredibly challenging from a containment point of view.”

Victoria’s coronavirus reproduction rate is around 1, meaning each infected person is passing the virus on to at least one other person.

“We have to drive that down, so that every third or fourth person who has it is infecting someone else. That’s where we’ll see the numbers halve and halve again and become more manageable,” Andrews said. “That will essentially take time.”

Neighbouring New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state, recorded 10 infections on Sunday, with authorities ordering students at two state schools to self-isolate after reporting COVID-19 cases.

Senate panel chief takes notice of seizure of Iranian ship

Senate
Senator A Rehman Malik, chairman of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, has taken serious notice of the matter regarding seizure of an Iranian ship at the Port Qasim, Karachi, over its involvement in oil smuggling into Pakistan.

According to a statement on Friday, Malik said that seizure of an Iranian ship, smuggling oil, was a serious international issue which might bring Pakistan under pressure as the smugglers had not respected the Pakistani law and sanctions on Iran.

A notice issued to the interior ministry stated that this ship had been intercepted by an American watchdog, which had informed the government of Pakistan for legal action against the importers, exporters and the refinery involved.

The notice quoted media reports as saying that the ship’s papers were forged. It asked the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) to coordinate with the collector Custom Karachi to provide full detail and briefing to the committee on the matter.

The notice asked the FIA to provide a copy of the report of the American watchdog, copy of the forged documentation and its forensic report from an independent lab, details of the Importer in Pakistan and the middle man involved in this deal.

It also asked the FIA to investigate any past allegation on this Importer for bringing substandard or illegal diesel and crude oil to Pakistan and provide to the committee the list of all those supplying sub-standard diesel, crude oil and other petroleum products, and details of the cases registered for smuggling at Port Qasim.

Malik directed FIA director general to coordinate with the Collector Custom, Karachi, to provide briefing to the committee as to who was responsible and the details of the FIR as per the complaint and details of the smuggling/fraud done with the government of Pakistan in case of the Iranian ship.

Australia to host T20 World Cup in 2022

Australia to host T20 World Cup in 2022
Australia will host the this year's T20 World Cup delayed by the coronavirus in 2022, the International Cricket Council announced on Friday.

India will host the 2021 edition as planned, the global governing body said, while the 50-over Women´s World Cup, scheduled for next year in New Zealand, has been postponed until 2022.

The ICC last month announced that the 2020 edition of the T20 World Cup could not take place as planned in Australia from October this year.

ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney said in a statement on Friday: "We now have absolute clarity on the future of ICC events, enabling all of our members to focus on the rescheduling of lost international and domestic cricket.

"We will now proceed as planned with the men's T20 World Cup 2021 in India and host the 2022 edition in Australia."

ICC acting chairman Imran Khwaja said health and safety had been the top priority.

"The decisions the board have taken today are in the best interests of the sport, our partners and importantly our fans," he added.

COVID-19 has played havoc with the global sporting calendar but international cricket has resumed behind closed doors in England, with the host nation currently taking on Pakistan in a three-match Test series.

The format of the 2021 T20 World Cup will remain as it was for 2020 and all teams that qualified for that event will now participate in India in 2021.

A new qualification process will be run for the 2022 edition.

The format of the postponed Women's World Cup will remain as it was for 2021. Five teams have already qualified for the event and that will stand for 2022.

The original global qualification event to determine the final three teams will now be held in 2021.
