U.S. election will be on Nov. 3 as planned: Trump advisers say

White House
White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows said Trump was raising concerns about mail-in ballots when he floated the idea of delaying the U.S. vote.

“We’re going to hold an election on November 3 and the president is going to win,” Meadows said on CBS’ “Face the Nation.”

Presidential campaign adviser Jason Miller echoed the sentiment on “Fox News Sunday,” saying, “The election is going to be on November 3rd and President Trump wants the election to be on November 3rd.”

Trump on Thursday suggested delaying the U.S. elections, an idea immediately rejected by both Democrats and his fellow Republicans in Congress - the sole branch of government with the authority to make such a change.

Critics and even Trump’s allies dismissed the notion as an unserious attempt to distract from devastating economic news, but some legal experts warned that his repeated attacks could undermine his supporters’ faith in the election process.

The Republican president has been trying to undermine confidence in mail-in balloting, claiming repeatedly and without evidence that it would lead to widespread voter fraud.

Meadows took up his boss’s cause on Sunday, warning that mail-in ballots must be handled properly without providing evidence that they have not been in the past.

Asked if it were irresponsible for Trump to float the idea, Meadows skirted the question, saying “It is responsible for him to say that if we try to go to 100% universal mail-in ballots, will we have an election result on November 3? Now I would suggest we wouldn’t even have it on January 1.”

Republican Governor Asa Hutchinson told CNN on Sunday the election should be held on time and it was up to states to ensure balloting be carried out properly.

“It’s not helpful for the president to think out loud in a public fashion and express some frustration,” he added.

The coronavirus crisis is expected to drive a surge in mail voting in November. State election officials are working to ensure tens of millions of ballots can reach voters in time to be cast and are returned in time to be counted.

Miller criticized efforts by states including Nevada for moving toward expanding mail-in balloting during emergencies like the coronavirus epidemic, as well as other states that will count ballots postmarked Nov. 3 that arrive after Election Day.

Trump early Sunday called for a lawsuit to be filed to counter Nevada’s legislative efforts to extend mail-in balloting. “This is outrageous. Must be met with immediate litigation!,” he said in a Twitter post.

Six days of August are important for Karachi as there is a prediction of rainfall: NDMA

NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Muhammad Afzal
National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Chairman Lieutenant General Muhammad Afzal on Sunday said there are chances of another spell of rain in the city from 7 to 9 August.

Addressing a media briefing in Islamabad, he said that six days of August are important for Karachi as there is a prediction of rainfall in the city from 7 to 9 August and then a weak system would remain in the city, which would cause little drizzle from time to time in the metropolis till August 15.

There are fewer chances of rainfall in the city after that, said the NDMA chairman.

He said that 83 mm rain was recorded in Karachi during one hour in a day previously after which the Prime Minister directed him to reach the city to carry out relief activities.

The water was, however, drained out when I reached Karachi, Muhammad Afzal said.

“Karachi issues could only be solved after realizing the issues faced by the city,” he said and added that 20,000 tonnes of garbage was generated in the city but there is no mechanism to dispose-off.

He said that NDMA is being tasked to clear encroached nullahs in the city and asked the federal and the provincial authorities to sit together to resolve the city’s long-standing issues as temporary measures would only subside them rather than solving them permanently.

Lieutenant General Muhammad Afzal said that the NDMA has launched the cleanliness drive in the city and would take measures to minimize the effects from rainfall as compared to the past.

India’s Interior Minister Amit Shah has been admitted to hospital after catching the coronavirus, he said on Sunday, becoming the most senior politician in the country to test positive for the disease.

Shah, a close aide to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, heads a ministry that has been at the forefront of managing the epidemic.

India’s coronavirus outbreak is the third-worst in the world behind the United States and Brazil, with nearly 1.7 million confirmed cases and 36,500 deaths, according to a Reuters tally.

“I request all of you who came in contact with me in the last few days to isolate yourselves and get tested,” Amit Shah said in a tweet.

Shah, 55, said he had got himself tested after exhibiting initial symptoms of COVID-19. “My health is fine but I am being hospitalised on the advice of doctors,” he added.

An interior ministry spokesman said he was unable to immediately comment on when Shah had last met with Modi.

Covid-19 infection might spread sharply after Eid-ul Azha: Syed Nasir Hussain Shah

Syed Nasir Hussain Shah
Sindh Information Minister Syed Nasir Hussain Shah on Sunday expressed apprehension that the Covid-19 infection rate might take an upward trend sharply after Eid-ul Azha.

“We may see a rise in the Covid-19 infections after Eid-ul Azha unlike the Eid-ul Fitr as there are reports that people have violated health guidelines laid down by the government in wake of Covid-19 pandemic,” said Nasir Shah while talking to media in Sukkur.

Sindh minister said the provincial government was in contact with the federation regarding the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for Muharram ul Haram. He said that the government will soon issue standard operating procedures regarding Muharram ul Haram and everyone has to implement it.

He further said that there is no corona-free area in Pakistan, adding that the role of Ulema is important during the Muharram.

“The role of religious scholars is important and they have cooperated with the government in every matter regarding the Coronavirus,” he added.

Meanwhile, 177 new cases of the coronavirus have been confirmed in Sindh in the past 24 hours, raising the provincial tally to 121,486.

This is the lowest rise in daily infections since April 18, when the province recorded 138 cases.

Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in a statement said one more person died of the disease, with Sindh’s overall death toll rising to 2,224.

A total of 5,272 tests were carried out in the province during the last 24 hours, according to Shah.

Money laundering case:NAB arrested Sharif Group’s CFO

nab
National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has claimed to have made progress in an alleged money laundering case against the Sharif family after it arrested the chief financial officer (CFO) of the Sharif group Usman.

According to sources, he is the prime suspect in the money laundering cases against Sharif family. “NAB has concrete evidence against the accused,” they said adding that Usman manages the accounts of the Sharif group.

He is also accused of his involvement in money-laundering activities.

It is pertinent to mention here that Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) president Shehbaz Sharif on May 04 appeared before National Accountability Bureau (NAB) in money laundering cases.

According to details, a joint investigation team of the anti-corruption watchdog interrogated the PML-N leader for two hours.

The PML-N president skipped the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) appearance for the last two times and submitted his response on both occasions through his counsel. However, NAB had termed the response submitted by PML-N president as unsatisfactory.

Other than Shehbaz, his sons Hamza Shehbaz and Suleman Shehbaz are also nominated in the money laundering case.

Hamza Shehbaz is already imprisoned in the case while properties of former chief minister were confiscated on the court order.
