Pakistan Army was not in politics, is not and will not be: Sheikh Rashid

 Sheikh Rashid
Minister for Interior Sheikh Rashid Ahmed emphasised that the Pakistan Army was "not involved" in the country's politics in the past nor would it be in the future.

Speaking to the media , he questioned why the leaders of the opposition's Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) did not take the name of Gen Ziaul Haq when they talked about the alleged role of the army in politics.

"They polished Ziaul Haq's boots. They are a product of General Headquarters gate number four. Pakistan Army is a great army. It was not in politics, is not and will not be in politics. It was with democracy, is with and will be with democracy."

He was referring to the PDM's power show in Larkana a day earlier in which PPP chairperson Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said that the opposition had united on PDM's platform to rescue the country from the government's alleged inefficiencies and will together make efforts to end "the business of selected and selection".

PML-N Vice President Maryam Nawaz also lambasted the "selected government" of Prime Minister Imran Khan, saying: "When political parties started completing their terms, some forces to whom 'divide and rule' suited started getting restless. Then we saw [former ISI chief Lt Gen Ahmed Shuja] Pasha set up a party by collecting political trash named the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, and that party was then used in dharnas and conspiracies against your elected government."

She said while politicians were given death sentences and faced character assassinations, those who committed much severer offences such as "breaking the country and the Constitution, losing Siachen and the Kashmir cause, violating one's oath to interfere in politics, having political rivals killed, and committing corruption worth billions" were not held accountable.

Responding to a question about the possibility of a grand national dialogue, Rashid said the opposition had been "silent" for two years because they thought "something would come out" but when it did not happen, "they [suddenly] remembered everything."

He said that the government would decide on its response when the PDM announced the date for its long march. "Imran Khan can take any decision. We have not held a meeting on how we will set up welcome camps for them."

Replying to a question about the opposition's long march, the minister said: "There is a difference between long march and lone march."

He claimed that the opposition's fight was "more against the NAB (National Accountability Bureau) instead of Imran Khan", adding that all the opposition wanted was an end to the corruption cases against them.

On the matter of resignations by opposition lawmakers in the national and provincial assemblies, he predicted that the opposition would eventually "reconsider" them.

"Yesterday they said [Member of the National Assembly] Murtaza Javed Abbasi will give his resignation. You will see [him say] 'I did not send this.'" Rashid said computerised and typed resignations were "illegal" and they should instead be handwritten.

The minister said it was up to Abbasi to decide "whether he wants to listen to Maryam" or get an inquiry done regarding who sent a resignation in his name to the National Assembly Secretariat.

"You will see there will be no resignations,"

The minister said Maryam and Bilawal were "showpieces", while the "real decision-makers are sitting behind; that's why I'm saying the serious people should come forward".

Those pointing fingers at institutions can’t be champions of democracy: PM Imran

Prime Minister Imran Khan and Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan
Taking aim at the opposition parties, Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Monday those pointing fingers at state institutions for political gains can never be champions of democracy.

Talking to Adviser on Parliamentary Affairs Babar Awan, who called on him today in Islamabad, he said all pillars of the state are working within their respective domains for development of the country.

Prime Minister Khan underscored that strengthening institutions is vital to a strong and vibrant democracy.

Mr Awan termed the government’s policies for economic stability and control of COVID-19 key successes. Billing opposition leaders as merchants of darkness, he said they have no future in the country’s politics.

On Saturday, the premier had severely criticised opposition parties for what he termed their “double standards” and self-serving politics.

Addressing a ceremony after laying the foundation stone of different projects including the university in Chakwal’s Balkassar, 500-bed hospital, law college, and Ring Road, he said those who are claiming to be ‘champions of the democracy’ are asking to overthrow an elected government.

Pak-Afghan trade routes to stay open despite border disruptions

Pak-Afghan trade routes to stay open despite border disruptions
Pakistan is looking to increase its share in the Afghan market by 60-65%. At the moment, Islamabad possesses 43% of the total imports in the neighbouring country.

According to a news reports , the government has finalised a trade and investment for the landlocked Afghanistan after taking the General Headquarters (GHQ) on board.

Under the plan, trade routes between the two countries would remain open despite subversive activities from militants across the divide, Adviser to the Prime Minister on Commerce and Investment Abdul Razak Dawood confirmed. In the past, trade routes were shut when there was any disruption in the bordering area, damaging exports to Afghanistan. After Kabul diversified its import regime, some of Pakistan's share in the Afghan market went to Iran and India.

Dawood said the country's exports tumbled from $2.6 billion in 2010-11 to $877 million, adding that the incumbent government was now geared to increase exports worth up to $1.2 billion in the current fiscal year to Afghanistan. During the first five months of the current year, the exports surged by 3.2%.

The current government has now planned a new vision for trade, investment, transit and transshipment for Afghanistan with secure, open, reliable and efficient routes and borders, ensuring connectivity with Afghanistan beyond Central Asian States.

Under the vision, the government has permitted the bulk import of wheat, coal and fertilisers for Afghanistan through the Gwadar Port and to this effect, the first shipment for Kabul arrived at the Gwadar port on July 31, 2020.

Dawood said a 22-member delegation from Kabul arrived in Pakistan on Sunday to hold talks with Pakistani authorities on the Preferential Trade Agreement (PTA) and revised the Afghanistan Pakistan Transit Trade Agreement (APTTA).

Once the PTA is inked and made operational, Dawood said, Pakistan will not only get its lost market share of $2.6 billion in the short term but in the next five years’ time, exports would go up to $5 billion.

The PTA would also help formalise the 70% off-the-book trade, which is currently prevalent. Only 30% trade is formalised for which letters of credit are opened.

Islamabad had held two-day talks in Kabul on November 16-18 with focus on finalisation of a draft for APTTA, signing of PTA, free movement of trucks of goods in each country and port, customs and banking related issues in trade.

The Pakistan armed forces have managed to cover around 90% of the areas bordering Afghanistan with barbed wires. This has allowed a mjor drop in the smuggling of goods from Afghanistan.

The PM's adviser, however, said smuggling is still continuing into Pakistan’s market, inflicting a huge loss to the local industry. “This issue has been raised with the Kabul authorities also,” he said.

Dawood said in case of smuggling of goods, under the new APTTA, Pakistan will give six months notice to the Kabul administration and if no required action has been taken, Pakistan will then have the right to scratch down the agreement.

More importantly, Pakistan would also be having the right to place restrictions in trade under the APTTA if the smuggling of goods from Afghanistan to Pakistan takes place. Pakistan wants the APTTA should be for three to five years, not for 10 years.
